After watching His Dark Materials on Sunday night I switched to BBC Four to watch the documentary with Pullman and Alan Yentob... They had a hilarious exchange where Pullman explained why it was inadvisable to describe your heroine as 'feisty' in most circumstances.... Ooops 😂😂😂😂

Here‘s a 3 for 1 review of these books I finished this week.

Dracul was a great reimagining of the Dracula myth, coming from a descendent of Stoker himself. Listened to the Audible full cast recording.

World War Z was a reread on audio for a road trip last weekend. Full cast recording was EXCELLENT.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Vol. 2 was a bit of a let down from the first volume. Gave it 3 ⭐️ for the artwork but (cont‘d in spoiler👇🏼)

Kimberlone I didn‘t care for the depiction of the violent beating of Mina by the Invisible Man, nor the gross and unexpected sex scene between Mina and Quartermain that seemed to come out of nowhere. At least Mina‘s beating has a purpose in the plot. The sex scene was totally pointless and honestly icky to see 3w

This was such a chilling read, It flickers between the past and Bram's present. Told by his own journal, his brother's, his sisters letters and another we meet along the way. I like that we saw it all from different perspectives. I couldn't help but love Bram. The story itself is a slow build but I was gripped. The images created by this are scary and the atmosphere is so haunting 4* #TeamSlaughter #Scareathlon @Clwojick

Were you aware that there are 102 pages missing from the beginning of the original draft of Dracula? These missing pages are what inspired this book. Written by the great-grandnephew of Bram Stoker, this novel serves as a precursor to Dracula. It gives us a eerie rendering of Stoker's early life & what could've driven him to write the story we do know. Facts wrapped in fiction, this was a slow but good read in that great Gothic Horror style.

I was absorbed in this book since picking it up. I would describe it as a ghost story that inspired Bram Stoker to write "Dracula." If you enjoyed "Dracula" or ghost stories I would recommend this book. “There are mysteries which men can only guess at, which age by age they may solve only in part.” ~Bram Stoker's Dracula

This book is fantastic. You follow the Stoker family from childhood to their travels/race against Dracul. The flits between childhood, letters and diary entries mixed with the book present lends itself to fantastic story telling. I have not been able to put this book down.
The ending entwines with Stokers Dracula beautifully; Bram is visited by Mina Harker, reads her experience and decides to take action. I am left wanting more. #mustread

I read Dracula the Undead (which I loved), also written by dacre stoker, so I was expecting Dracul to be very good. I wasn't disappointed. This darkly atmospheric Gothic horror was a joy to read.
If you read this book, be sure to read the author's notes at the end. I found them fascinating.

The book is sort of a novelty since it‘s co-written by Bram Stoker‘s great-grandnephew (or great-great?) who also co-wrote a sequel which was good. This book, a prequel of sorts, is more than a novelty though—it‘s a meta masterpiece. I really loved it.

julesG The authors' notes. They are a bit hedgy. If, as they claim, the first 100 pages of the original manuscript were cut for the UK publisher, but all other publishers got his original final draft, why has this OV never been published then? Nor come up in any way? Even the authors didn't have access to it. That's what I've been puzzling over. 11mo

Question #4 Decre Stoker is indeed the great-grandnephew of Bram Stoker himself. Do you think this holds any weight with the fact that he is now writing Dracula novels?

#DraculBuddyRead
@BookBelle84 @Rachbb3 @julesG @WeeWeegieBookworm @BookwormAHN @rajithr @AlobelThee @Shaneyney @Larkken @Melli @jb72 @MellieAntoinete

julesG It probably adds a bit of emphasis to the story, especially when the authors say they used Stoker's manuscripts - which would be easier to obtain/have a look at as family members. 11mo
BookBelle84 Yes I feel that being in that family he would have grown up surrounded by the stories and history which would give him an advantage when it comes to continuing on in the Dracula stories. I think he did a fantastic job and I don't believe anyone could have done better. 11mo
TheReadingMermaid @BookBelle84 I totally feel the same way! I feel like Bram might be whispering in his ear at night and writing through him! 11mo
DeleteAcct Yes, I think as a family member he had access to things someone else would not. And it worked! Fantastic book! 11mo
BookwormAHN I think it was brilliant. It's definitely in the family. 11mo

Question #3 all the different movies on Dracula has definitely put a different spin each to their own. Which Dracula movie is your favorite and why?

julesG Dracula Untold with Luke Evans. Simply because Dracula doesn't come across as too much of a douge in this one. Crazy in/for love still, but not this nearly unreasonable "must have her as MY bride at all costs". 11mo
violettemeier Bram Stoker's Dracula is my favorite movie. I love the dark imagery, the actors, and the altered storyline. It was much better than the book. 11mo
julesG I never liked Anne Rice's Lestat. Probably for the same reason as I don't like Dracula. And in the film he was played by the Scientology dwarf. 😵😵 11mo

TheReadingMermaid @violettemeier oooo 😗 I 💕💕💕 BS's Dracula. My fav 😍 11mo
TheReadingMermaid @julesG I loved Tom Cruise as Lestat. If you read the books, he was spot on! 11mo
julesG I threw the book across the room. Granted, it was my first ever book in English and I was 14. I might have to give it another shot. 11mo
TheReadingMermaid @julesG oh my! Lol I'd give them another shot. Many of them are very good. 11mo
DeleteAcct @julesG My favorite is Dracula Untold as well. Great movie. 11mo
BookwormAHN Bram Stoker's Dracula is one of my favorite movies 🖤 I also liked Interview and Dracula Untold. @julesG I don't like Tom Cruise personally but @TheReadingMermaid is right he was a perfect Lestat. 11mo
