Dorothy thinks she is lost forever when a terrifying tornado crashes through Kansas and whisks her and her dog, Toto, far away to the magical land of Oz. To get home Dorothy must follow the yellow brick road to Emerald City and find the wonderfully mysterious Wizard of Oz. Together with her companions the Tin Woodman, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion whom she meets on the way, Dorothy embarks on a strange and enchanting adventure. With a charming introduction by award-winning Cornelia Funke, The Wizard of Oz is one of the twenty wonderful classics being relaunched in Puffin Classics in March 2015.

What an adventurous read! Dorothy wants to be rescued from the strange land she happens to be in accidentally and wishes to go back home, but before that, she goes on a series of thrilling events with her friends (Lion, Scarecrow, and Tin Woodman) and her dog Toto. I absolutely loved reading this tale.

#UCFLAE3414F19 The Wizard of Oz was originally written by L. Frank Baum in 1900, however this book is a condensed version of the original. The condensation of the text and illustrations are done by Charles Santore. This Modern Fantasy book is perfect for a literature circle since it is a longer and has so many different elements for the students to discuss over the course of a couple of weeks.

Jewelwinkler This book would immerse readers into a world of fantasy and teach them the meaning of friendship as well as being confident in yourself. For this book the UDL guidelines I would follow would be 8.3 (foster collaboration and community) 9.3 (develop self-assessment and reflection) and 6.1 (guide appropriate goal- setting). 1mo
Jewelwinkler The EL strategies I would use for this book would be 6 (continually monitor students comprehension) and 44 (focus on thinking skills). Since these EL strategies would be useful during a literature circle. Some more information about how literature circles work in the classroom can be found here http://www.litcircles.org/Structure/struct4.html 1mo
MarkZalewski This is a classic, a good pick for sure great job! 1mo

kgarzon A condensed yet decent length novel would be great for LCs! There is also the benefit of having a media adaptation you could use in the classroom to practice compare/contrast between the two. 1mo

Growing up, a new toy came once a year and new clothes maybe twice yearly. However, I could pick as many books as wanted from the monthly Scholastic form so long as I read them - and I did. Years later with my Kansas-born kids, I read hundreds of books again and anew. ...But I had never read this, until now!

Tanisha_A Aw! Love this photograph! 2mo
marleed @Tanisha_A I had such fun with Paisleigh, the book, and the yellow brick road. It was hard to choose which pic to use. The funniest was as she held the book. I was trying to take a photo, title out, but she kept flipping it. She wanted to look at the front cover as I snapped pics! 2mo
BooknerdsLife This is such an adorable photo! 🥰❤️ 2mo
marleed @BooknerdsLife Thank you. I specifically took my book to this shopping area so I could snap that pic on the yellow brick road - seemed I had to do something special since I‘m in Kansas. Lunching with my daughter and her little pal, Paisleigh was a lovely bonus! ...P‘s mom never expected this fun collection of pics! 2mo

I've always loved the wizard of Oz and I really love the connections that my hometown of Holland Michigan has with L. Frank Baum 😁 Baum summered in the macatawa area of Holland Michigan and it's said that the area and the people were his inspiration for the Wizard of Oz! Centennial Park near our library put up the big living book installation and the yellow brick road, leading to the library where the and statues have been installed 😍

Cortg That‘s really cool! (edited) 3mo

Not the right edition, but....

It is so cool that these exist! There is a graphic novel adaptation followed by an unabridged original text. I am so excited about this, it‘s ridiculous! 😆

I also bought the Black Beauty title. Maybe now I will actually read Black Beauty 😊

Mehso-so

This was my first time reading this book. Growing up I was (and still am) in love with the movie and yet I never picked up this book. Well, after reading it.....I'm kinda underwhelmed. There were some very charming parts, but then there were 'meh' parts. It was more violent than I expected. Overall, a 3 out of 5 stars.

umbrellagirl I love the vintage cover! 4mo

I wasn‘t expecting movie Oz but I was expecting more from the story. I always thought the book was supposed to be more violent and I was wrong. It was much shorter than I expected as well. It was a good book and ticks another classic off the list.

Lova I thought the same thing when I read it to my daughter. 4mo

This TL novel is another classic (obviously) that you NEED to read if you have only ever watched the film. I said this novel would be great for a LC. https://homeschoolgiveaways.com/2016/01/the-wizard-of-oz-free-resources-and-prin... is a great resource that could aid teachers and students while reading this graphic novel together.

kennedimartin A teacher could use ESOL principles 9 and 10 when reading this book to show proper note taking / annotating strategies as well as model the correct way to do a LC. UDL 3.1 principle could be used by asking the students who had ever watched the film before. #lae3414sp19 7mo

Der Zauberer von Oz | L. Frank Baum

@MinDea mentioned this to be a series. A series❓🤔 A book ✅, a film ✅, a musical ✅.

But a book series❓🤔 Yepp.
👉🏼 🇩🇪 https://www.buechertreff.de/buchreihe/12452-der-zauberer-von-oz-the-wizard-of-oz...

Translated to German are (only) the books 1-7.

I mean even if every volume is translated I would be reluctant to read them … But why do publishers do this❓ Stop publication/translation in the middle of nowhere❓😠

MinDea Yes! It is a book series. I think there are 13 or 15 books in the series. I have never read the books, but have seen the movie, the musical, the play and the TV series! I hope the rest get translated! 11mo
ju.ca.no Wow, I did not know this😳 and I hate when publishers do this!! (edited) 11mo
Buechersuechtling @ju.ca.no Well, me neither until MinDea mentioned it. Call me naive but this is a classic, so why do you do this❓ It‘s not any random Young-Adult-New-Adult-Twilight-girl-romance stuff of which you can understand when readers and literary scene are fed-up with. Shouldn‘t the whole series be seen as a classic together with the appropriate obligation(s)❓🤔 11mo
ju.ca.no @Buechersuechtling I think so too... but I guess lots of people don‘t even know it is a series so maybe they didn‘t sell enough😭 11mo
ju.ca.no @MinDea I found one Kindle book on Amazon that said „all 24 books in the series“😱 11mo

Finally read this children‘s classic. It‘s a rare situation where I prefer the movie to the book. Perhaps it‘s because I am a child of the 70s and 80s and grew up watching The Wizard of Oz once a year when it was broadcast on TV, back in the days before cable, Netflix, DVDs, etc. It was always a big event when The Wizard of Oz was on! The movie just has a certain magic. Also, what‘s with the creepy hammer heads in the book? Those are not right!!

TheWordJar I lived for when the Wizard of Oz would be on TV that ONE night a year! 💚 But then I always hid my eyes when the wicked witch and her monkeys came on! 😱 12mo
