This, the second of the Veronica Speedwell stories, was great fun.

Stoker and Veronica are tasked by the Princess Louise to save a man who has been convicted of murder. Secrets, as always, compound the task. In the process we spend time with the patrons and creators of the 19th C art scene, enter and investigate the Elysian Grotto (rated R+), repeatedly right an upended tortoise, and meet Lady Wellie. And their relationship grows stronger.

I liked this book even more than the first one. I guessed the killer pretty early but the relationship building between Stoker and Veronica is so lovely.

Delightful! I loved spending time with Veronica and Stoker again! Can‘t wait to tackle the third one!

I absolutely love these books! Veronica and Stoker have such an incredible chemistry that is touching in moments and laugh out loud in others! Quickly becoming one of my favorites!

As a caution, Veronica, the main character, is very in touch with her sexuality which comes up often throughout the book. There are not explicit acts described, but much of the book revolves around this topic. Just to know as you decide whether it's the book for you!

I loved Veronica & Stoker even more in the witty 2nd installment in this mystery series! The dialogue danced & the chemistry sizzled. I really enjoyed delving into the 19th century European art world too, which made for an engaging, if a teeny bit predictable, whodunnit. This seems like one of those series where each book gets better than the last — so I‘m excited to see where we go next! ★★★★☆.

Total comfort read. Some days are just crushing with life and although I have several reading obligations I just needed a Dr Pepper, bowl of popcorn and this book. And lots of hugs from my teens. This was a perfect read to distract and feel better. Luckily today is a new day. And why yes, I did get the next book just in case.

The second book in the series is even better than the first one with its grottoes, and glass blown toys, sheep's eyeballs, and corpses mixed with tongue-in-cheek Victorian sensibilities. Deanna Raybourn used the first Veronica Speedwell book to warm up and she's really coming into her own. These books make me happy and cheerful. Stoker and Veronica are my current favorite literary "not-couple" so far.

Veronica and Stoker May not be #RomeoAndJuliet by the romantic tension in their relationship gets even more heated here! I love this series so much! My fiance has been gone for a week on a business trip and won't be back for another week and I woke up with a bad cold this morning 🤧...this was the comfort read (and comfort kitty 🐈) I needed!

The second book in a historical murder mystery series I‘m really loving! I love the banter between the main character, Veronica, who is quite the abnormal woman for the Victorian era, and her companion Stoker. Admittedly, the huge number of Agatha Christies I‘ve read taught me how to guess whodunit, but I did not enjoy it any less for that! Onto the third!

Had a great time on a panel with Deanna Raybourn at the George Mason University #FallFortheBook festival, discussing Historical Female Detectives. Both of us advocated strongly for more diverse & inclusive historical fiction -- so many stories out there that our high school history textbooks neglected! Failed to get a picture of us together, but at least I got one of our books.

Easy listening while cleaning the kitchen, driving, walking.

This hit a low point in the middle and I had to kick myself into getting passed that, well, somewhat dull pace. The last 4 chapters saved it. But too much telling in this one. Way too much telling. Veronica and Stoker are good, strong characters I enjoy but this "investigation" and the somewhat rabbit out of the hat reveal left me meh.

Hockey is back... kinda.. it's Kraft's Hockeyville's game. Leafs vs Sens. Pre season rosters but Tavares' first game as a Leaf so it's televised from an ice rink of 1200 people.

I finally finished this, and I typically don't read sequels. I loved the first book so much that I decided to give this a shot. It took me weeks to finish because I kept putting it down and wasn't motivated to pick it back up. I started back to work after 14 months off, hence my hesitation. I've been so busy planning for my classes that pleasure reading took a backseat. I enjoyed this and have already put the 3rd in the series in my Amazon cart.

September is a hard month, reading wise. Slammed by work, a few 1000 books being published during the fall and 1000 of $ to spend for the library. My life is hard 🤣. I offer my read so far books word-cloud in fall colours. Still reading Raybourn, still good.

I must confess I never realized the term mentor came from The Odyssey. The goddess Athena disguised herself as the wise old Mentor at times, when she guided Both Odysseus & Telemachus, his son.

Fall weather isn't here but I can kinda make believe it is with really wonderful fall smells. This is my first 🍎 compote of the season. I use Jamaican cinnamon and it smells... wonderful right now. Reading and 🥘 .

This came in the mail on Thursday. I'm not much for sequels, but I've just started, so we shall see. That Veronica Speedwell does understand the male of the species. "...in my experience, gentlemen are champion sulkers so long as one doesn't call the behavior by that name." #bookmail

I finished this audiobook while starting to build a puzzle that is a picture of my daughter when she was little. Another terrific book in this series. On to number three, A Treacherous Curse.

I accidentally read this before the first book in the series but that didn't really hinder my enjoyment of it. I love this genre of women detectives (amateur or otherwise) in historical times. This one sagged a little in the middle but otherwise kept my interest. I'll definitely read the rest of the series.
