I loved this so much! Just a fun story. So much better than the movie.
The writing was good, I liked the characters, I liked the story.
I plan to read the other in the series.

Reread, I haven‘t read this book since 2006, watched the movie countless times, found out the movie was a book and this was my very first Alice Hoffman novel ever read.
That being said, the movie is very different from the book! The book is still good and I barely remembered how it went! ⬇️
All in all, the book and it's characters are so different from their movie counterparts, especially the relationships all the women have towards each other, Sally's daughters included, that I find I can enjoy them as separate pieces.
So glad to have read it and knocked it off my TBR list this year!!
I absolutely love this movie and was excited about reading the book. All the elements were there, but this isn‘t the same story. My biggest disappointment was the Aunts. They‘re favourite characters for me and they aren‘t main characters. Also they seem colder and older. Saly and Gillian don‘t even live with them or do magic. Anyway, I‘m so glad that this story produced the movie and can‘t wait to see number 2, but I didn‘t enjoy it as much.

📚Currently reading:
🎧Lud in the Mist
🎧Rise of the King
🎧The Midnight Library
Progress:
With all the holiday chaos I managed to do minimal reading last week. I am hoping to get back on track this December. I am still enjoying Lud a lot and started The Midnight Library, which is more depressing and relatable than I expected. Need to jump back into the Drizzt book, though, perhaps when I'll be drawing later/tomorrow
I really love the movie so I thought I'd give the book a try. I didn't hate it but I also didn't love it. The movie definitely did a better job telling a more cohesive story and took out the unnecessary POVs of essentially the same characters.
The book is definitely more loosey-goosey and full of tangents that feel awkward to read. It feels like the author added them in haste.
Adding the investigator 70% into the narrative felt off.
@OndinetheSea thank you so much for my #HHS #HauntedHollowSwap i got in late so my kitties havent seen their gift. That was soo sweet. I think i may keep the vampire for myself 🤣🤣🤣🤣i am definitely reading Practical Magic tomorrow!

The movie practical magic plus the lighting from the care of magical creatures lesson in Harry Potter. Soups, stews, chillis, baked goods.
#Witchathon tbr
My tbr of witchy books. I know I won‘t even make a dent in this pile but if I can knock one off my stack I‘ll be thrilled.
Started this one on audio! 💛💫⭐️
What are you reading today?
#LitsyLove
What is the correct order of these books? I‘ve seen several suggestions and I‘ve got to order the other two! I have started Practical Magic on audio 🎧💫💛
Help!!
Sally and her sister Gillian were raised by their spinster witch aunts. Both leave home to get away from the taunts and ridicule of the town, but maybe home isn‘t just a place.
This is the same story, but completely different from the movie and I am absolutely in love…with both haha
Is anyone else absurdly excited by the movie sequel news?! #booktomovie
Just saw this and had to play. I see lots of good ones already shared so I‘ll also add:
Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman
Chocolat by Joanne Harris
The Shining by Stephen King
I loved all these books and movies.
Thanks for asking @dabbe !

The Owens' women have been blamed for everything that has gone wrong in town since Maria Owens built a house on Magnolia Street. This unconventional house has 3 locks on every door.Gillian and Sally are sisters who live in the attic where they are raised by their carefree aunts who allow them freedom to do as they wish. Trouble seems to follow Gillian when she returns putting the responsibility of the dependable Sally to help remedy the situation.
Granted, I fell in love with the movie adaptation of Practical Magic before ever reading the novel…but I actually prefer the ending of the movie to the ending of the book. 🫢
To be clear, I also love the novel. Alice Hoffman‘s writing is just so pretty & evocative.

So my total for this year was 2,745. Not as good as I wanted to do. But, hope it helps with the team totals.

3/5 ⭐️ A bit disappointed in this book. And it's been awhile since I've seen the movie so I can't remember if I liked that either. This is the second book I've read of Hoffman's where I just feel meh towards the book so maybe it's just not a good reader/author match 🤷🏼♀️
#scarathlon #BatBrigade
Practical Magic on the TV, several jars of apple butter in the canner, and snacking on these skull pizza pockets!
Watching Practical Magic - one of my favorite fall movies!🎃🧙🏼♀️👻 #scarathlon #teamBOOks @Bookwormjillk
Book 1 for Dewey's 24-Hour #Readathon. Oddly enough, I didn't enjoy this one as much as The Rules of Magic and The Book of Magic, though I don't know why. It was still good, and I'm glad I read it because now I can watch the movie. 135 points for #Scarathlon #TeamWhoYaGonnaCall
This is the second time I've read this book, and while I still like the movie more, I did enjoy the book more the second time. Also, the cover is gorgeous, and I really want to hang out with their aunts 🐈⬛️

For the first half of October and #scarathlon2023 and #blackcatcrew is 735 points. That‘s mostly from movies/shows. I‘m about halfway through reading Practical Magic. I need to step up my reading game for the second half.
I‘m off to a promising start for the #outstandingoctober read-a-thon! Hoping to complete my #bookspin, #authoramonth, and #scarathlon buddy reads over the course of the week.
Day 11 #Scarathlon Photo Challenge - Witch. I absolutely love this series, and the Fall feels like the perfect time to read it. #TeamWhoYaGonnaCall
Recently I rewatched the movie; my friends & I loved it when we were young, but was it actually good? Or did we just want to drink midnight margaritas & kill our abusers?
I feel similarly about the book, which is somewhat different in its premise from the film; it has style, it‘s weird, whimsical & a bit haunting. But found it of little substance.

I‘m still so far behind on book reviews! This is my most recent audiobook, a reread for my church book club. I read the physical book before, but I think I liked it better on audio. Still a bit slow in plot but a good witchy story, especially now that I‘ve read the prequel, The Rules of Magic.
I missed yesterdays reading sprint, but I did check something off my bucket list with a Candy Corn Cocktail!

For a short book, this book seemed to go on way too long. It was ok. But not great.

Here is my #bookspin list for October that doubles as my #scarathlon TBR! This is definitely ambitious as I have to read some #LMPBC books and continue my chronological read of Stephen King (Firestarter and Cujo) as well. BUT I‘m so excited for spooky season!!!!
#scarathlon #batbrigade
1. The tagged series. The movie was good, too. In my younger days when I liked horror, it‘d have to be The Stand
2. Grape-flavored nerds: the only time of the year I get any!
3. Listening—while driving and doing chores, reading—before going to bed
4. Dang, no doubt about it, cooler weather—& the way the sun is angled differently (but more noticeably in the northern states)
5. I still ❤️ 80s music 😊
My #Scarathlon2023 to be watched list. Mostly classic scary movies. I‘ll probably add in a few new movies as well. And a few tv series. #blackcatcrew #scarathlon
My #bookspin titles for October. I haven't been reading much lately. Hoping that #scarathlon (and some new books I've really been looking forward to) will help me get my groove back.
