#bfcr3 only one week left! I had a HUGE mood boost this week when I was given a clean bill of health after 3 years of post-op cancer checkups. Wahoo!!! So I have a lot more energy/enthusiasm than I've had in AGES and I'm getting much more active. I even ran 3x this week!! 😁 @wanderinglynn @Emilymdxn @Megabooks @Tineke @tjwill @cewilf @cobwebmoth @KathyWheeler @TheEllieMo @guinsgirlreads

There are 16 weeks left until 2020, and this year my focus was on minority/translated: authors of color, LGBTQIA+ authors, women authors, indigenous authors, authors in translation. I have another 4 books I want to get to for this theme, so I planned them out to stay on schedule. 2020 will be about reading the standards for lit majors, since I can count the # I've already read on one hand 😬 what does everyone have planned for the rest of 2019?

Butterfinger I have almost completed all my challenges except for#AroundtheWorld challenge. 52 books from 52 different countries. I'm trying to complete before 2020, but I'll be alright if I have to carry over. It is a great challenge because I'm learning about different cultures, people, and histories. 5y
bromeliad @Butterfinger That's an awesome challenge! Any favorites stand out? 5y
Butterfinger @bromeliad I just finished a Venezuelan western called Dona Barbara. I enjoyed Ghana's Homegoing. 5y
rwmg @Butterfinger @bromeliad I loved Dona Barbara. I saw on google that it's been made into a telenovela, which I can really imagine 5y

The group that put this together requested short essays from anyone who identified -- partially or wholly -- as Aboriginal. They got 120+ submissions and kept around half of them. They are not always well written, but they are all extremely important. I laughed with them, was appalled, cheered for them, was moved to tears. Read this collection. It's not long. Fit it in by the end of the year. It works for #readharder 2019. #indigenous #oceania

arlenefinnigan I read this for the Oceania #ReadHarder challenge too. Great isn't it? 5y

Has anyone here ever read Wonderbook by Jeff Vandermeer? He has a brief chapter about story structure, and points out nonlinear narrative structures that, when drawn, clearly come from nature: spirals, anemones, neurons. But it ends there. "Meander Spiral Explode" is a brilliantly clear deep-dive into this idea, exploring narrative shapes (SEPARATE from plot/character development), how to spot them, and what they do to "create magic on the page."

Yay congrats again @GrilledCheeseSamurai !!! #SixDigitSamurai is running til Oct 1 and involves being sent books from your TBR, so don't miss out Littens! @Lana1 is one of my newer followers who is also newish to Litsy...hello! 👋🏻 Favorite read of 2019 is tagged. This book is incredibly well written, and Roy has somehow almost created a new dialect of English in the language of the narrative...it's unlike anything I've read before. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

I have officially heard from three different medical professionals that I'm "probably fine" with regard to my cancer, now that I'm 3 years out post-op with no funny symptoms. OMG!!! Could come back later, "but it's unlikely." Is it too premature to celebrate? Cuz I am manic!! It hasn't felt this easy to breathe in years!!!

Barnes and Noble has tables and tables of 50% off books for the next three days, and it includes a lot of titles from their classics series. Y'all, this was the first book that woke up my brain to the sorts of layered meaning literature is capable of. I was 16. It is still at the top of my list. It only cost me $5 and is the translation from the brilliant Constance Garnett. I can't even right now. ♥️😭♥️😭♥️😭

Lcsmcat I need to reread this. I was far too young the first time to get everything out of it that I could. 5y

It's my Friday today and I could not be more ready! The last five days at work have been absurdly stressful. Bleh! But I have nothing scheduled for my "weekend" so I should be able to recharge the batteries and hopefully get on better #bfcr3 track, once I can decompress. Journaling 3/3, yoga 1/1, still getting daily caffeine to survive.

Ugh. I mean, I get it, people have incorrect notions of what Native Americans are "capable of," but it still seems gross to me that an author might need to point out that the Incas showcased the ability to "keep track of their wide-flung possessions." ? Like, would they "possess" it if they couldn't govern it? Probably not!

RealBooks4ever Curious as to what you didn‘t like about this book! 5y
bromeliad @RealBooks4ever yeah, sorry for not having posted anything, I didn't want to get ranty haha. I felt it was short yet meandering, that it didn't have any significant character growth, and that what it was trying to say, it didn't say well. Did you like it? 5y
RealBooks4ever Yes, I liked it. What I took away from it was that the woman might be on the autism spectrum. My grandson is also, so I picked up on some cues. Sorry you didn‘t enjoy it! 💜 5y
bromeliad @RealBooks4ever yeah, and I'm definitely not saying I have anything against a protagonist on the autism spectrum, or who is otherwise neurodiverse; I just couldn't connect with how the author chose to talk about it. I am definitely in the minority though--this book is on a lot of people's top choices over the last year! 5y
IamIamIam I really liked this but I feel like it had far more cultural significance in Japan than in the US. She essentially bucked a system that told her she was doing all the wrong things by not going to college and starting a career or getting married, as if those were her only options. I can see how the stilted dialog would be offputting but I listened to the audio and it was super short. Kudos for giving it a shot! 5y

#BFCr3 Well guys, as expected, I'm REALLY not doing well with my goal of no caffeine and no sugar. As of Sunday, I've only succeeded 2 of the 5 days. But today, I drank only half of a coffee, so maybe I'm getting somewhere? In other news, I'm blasting through my “6 books read during 6 weeks“ goal like there's no tomorrow! I might reconsider my goals on Saturday and update them to include exercise? Not sure.

Lucy_Anywhere It's amazing that you are even trying. Giving up caffeine AND sugar?!? I'm in awe! 5y
cobwebmoth You're doing great! 5y
See All 20 Comments
wanderinglynn I would delete the only and write: “I succeeded 2 days with no caffeine or sugar!” Because that‘s great progress as both of those are incredibly difficult to eliminate. It‘s good to strive for more, but celebrate what you did accomplish. 🎉 I don‘t think I‘d even make it 1 day without caffeine & sugar. 😂 One step, one day at a time. And it‘s only week 1. You‘re doing great! 💜 5y
bromeliad @Lucy_Anywhere @cobwebmoth @wanderinglynn Aww, thanks ladies! I really appreciate the support! 💛 5y
Megabooks Hey! That‘s good progress! 2/5 is way better than 0/5. 👍🏻👍🏻 You‘ll get there!!! 5y
Buechersuechtling @wanderinglynn I‘m not taking part in the challenge but I just wanted to put my oar in and say that I really loved your positive, supportive comment❣️ And @bromeliad I‘m just making the experience that once I stopped to doggedly try to hit my goals, they seem to be reached quite all by themselves – without me having the impression to have to put much effort in. So be gentle to and with yourself. It‘s always hard for the brain to accept bans. 5y
TheSpineView Awesome! 5y
Emilymdxn I always feel like it‘s easy to get caught up in ‘I set this numerical goal and I failed‘ when your body and your health aren‘t counting that specifically, they‘re noticing overall long term changes and efforts. I‘ve stopped setting myself numerical goals this round of the challenge and my goals are now like ‘try to do this‘, ‘increase this‘ and I find it really freeing cause I‘m just focusing on effort and whatever improvement I can manage 5y
Emilymdxn Your team is all behind you and we all know how it feels to not manage a ‘hard goal‘, but keeping making any effort at all is how changes get made! We can do this, absolutely adapt your goals if you need or want to! 5y
bromeliad @Buechersuechtling @Emilymdxn You both may have a point here about easing up and striving for improvement rather than trying to hit numbers or create a hard ban. Thanks for the perspective! I definitely run with the “I'm too hard on myself“ crowd sometimes, so this was a good reminder! 5y
bromeliad @Megabooks Thanks! I sure hope so! 5y
guinsgirlreads Nice work! I need my caffeine !! ☕️ 5y
KathyWheeler I made my sugar goal a “cut back” one instead of a total elimination one. It‘s extremely hard to do zero sugar because sugar is in places you‘d never expect. I think you‘ve done well! (edited) 5y
bromeliad @KathyWheeler Thanks! I think I might have it a bit easier than a lot of people related to hidden sugar -- I can't eat gluten, so I have to make all of my food from raw ingredients to avoid making myself sick for like a week. And probably because of that, the sugar has actually been pretty easy to cut out...it's the caffeine that's killing me! 5y
KathyWheeler @bromeliad We‘re the opposite! I found caffeine pretty easy to eliminate, but sugar is difficult for me, but I can eat things with gluten in them. 5y
wanderinglynn @Buechersuechtling thank you! ❤️ We are always hardest on ourselves. But we all need to take time to recognize what we have accomplished. And you and @Emilymdxn both made excellent points. 👍🏻 5y

Our Lady of the Nile: A Novel | Scholastique Mukasonga
post image
Pickpick

Coming-of-age novels about girls are usually written in rosy, nostalgic style, and this boarding school novel is no different. What's different is how these girls come of age: rather than maturing and accepting responsibility, this documents the transformation of girls who innocently/thoughtlessly parrot their parents' genocidal rhetoric into women who have internalized the rhetoric as their own. 👇👇👇

bromeliad I think coming-of-age novels are supposed to show how a child slowly accepts and adopts to the role society has given them...or doesn't. The difference here is that the societal role is a genocidal one. And that most of the girls don't say no. 5y

Saw this in the Litsy feed and had to give it a go. What a stress-busting way to start the day! 😍

Hestapleton Is this like a TBR of sorts or a card catalogue? I love them! 5y
bromeliad @Hestapleton I'm not sure how others are using them, but I draw them out for every book I have read, and then put the date on the back, and any other things I want to note -- good quotes, page length, overall rating, etc. But doing them for the TBR sounds great, too! 5y
SharonGoforth This is awesome!!😍😍 5y

Just signed up for the #HSreadathon! https://bit.ly/2SZAlsq Looking forward to spending my quiet August trying to blast through my TBR pile...but guys, do you have any idea how many #chunksters are on said pile? Or how much my pile blew up after the local bookstore decided to move and made all their books $2 to lighten the load? These are just the TBRs I have WITHIN ARMS REACH! 😆 😆 😆

Don Quixote Deluxe Edition | Miguel de Cervantes, Edith Grossman
post image

When I asked which #chunkster to read for the rest of the summer, the votes overwhelmingly came back in favor of Don Quixote! 🎉 🎉 🎉 Edith Grossman is a personal hero of mine, and her translation of DQ (of course) got gushing reviews, so that's the edition I'm reading 😁 My weekend is today/tomorrow, so I'll definitely be diving in before I'm back at work!

Things that are really embarrassing -- I somehow slept through the ENTIRETY of my education on Ancient Rome as a young adult. 😬 Since I know nothing about it beyond “et tu, Brute“ and I'm hankering for a nonfiction read, I picked this book up from the library today. Mary Beard is “happily of my generation“ in her interest in the life of the common citizen and gender studies, so I'm SUPER stoked to see what she says.

rretzler I didn‘t sleep through mine - I just didn‘t get much of an education in Ancient Rome beyond the basics 5y
TheBookStacker There‘s a great podcast called History of Rome that I quite enjoyed 5y
bromeliad @rretzler Yeah, I suppose when schools really only have 9 months to try to teach everything, there probably isn't much time to really delve into Ancient Rome! 5y
bromeliad @TheBookStacker Oh cool! I'll have to look into it! 5y

The author spent most of his life working with the tribes of Pakistan and Afghanistan--the people we refer to as “terrorists.“ So I was excited to find a novel that showed their traditions, cultures, and identities. But UGH. There was no plot, the “great human emotions“ this book lauds were told to the reader instead of being shown, and the tone of the whole thing was moralistic and patronizing. #Pakistan #readaroundtheworld #readingintranslation

LibrarianJen Bummer. Unfortunately most of my recommendations are for the Middle East, not South Asia. 5y
bromeliad @LibrarianJen I'm sure there are other books out there. I got lucky and found this one during a library browse. I'm moving on to other parts of the world now, but when I circle back, I'll do some online digging to find actual recommendations. 5y

kaysworld1 What I do when I get close to my challenge goal then I up it by 5 and keep doing that till the end of the year. 5y
bromeliad @Johanna414 I know! I've only been here for like 2 weeks and I've already noticed that my TBR has close to doubled! 😅 5y

Pickpick

I mean, I wouldn't expect even the majority of people who read this bitty-but-brilliant book to like it, but it feels so important, so relevant (written in 1990!!), and so mind-blowing that I want to thrust a copy of this book into the hands of every person I pass on the street and shout into their faces, “READ THIS BOOK. READ THIS BOOK RIGHT MEOW.“ #Argentina #readaroundtheworld #readingintranslation #readharder

I know César Aira has a reputation of being surreal to the point of making the most abstract-loving literary critics throw their hands up in bewilderment, but he's kinda blowing my mind. Like, a lot. #Argentina #readaroundtheworld #readingintranslation #readharder

Tale of Genji | Murasaki Shikibu
post image

It's been about 6 months since I slogged through a long book, and I wouldn't mind settling in with one for the rest of the summer...do any of these seem like particularly good choices?

1) Underworld by Don DeLillo
2) War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy
3) 2666 by Roberto Bolano
4) Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes
5) Jerusalem by Alan Moore
6) The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu

Graywacke Welcome to Litsy. I would recommend one if I had read any. 5y
bromeliad @Graywacke thanks! Haha well I appreciate the honesty! 😊 5y
BarbaraBB No real easy summer reads among them but I loved the upper three! 5y

sudi Welcome To Litsy 💜. I would recommend you a book but i've only read one of them which is War And Peace. It was pretty good though 😊 5y
Billypar I vote for the Bolaño because I just finished The Savage Detectives and am looking forward to 2666. 5y
bromeliad @BarbaraBB yeah, I've always had a weird definition of "summer read"...usually, because I have more down time, I like to find longer books, since during the fall/winter I don't pick them up regularly and then I forget everything lol. 5y
bromeliad @sudi thank you! 😊 5y
bromeliad @Billypar how was Savage detectives? 5y
Billypar I liked it- long and slow in spots, but it really rewards you for sticking with it. I finished it on Saturday and am still thinking about it- philosophical but also kind of playful in a weird way. I should be posting a review soon. 5y
bromeliad @Billypar sounds good! Looking forward to your review! 5y
CrowCAH Welcome to the Litsy family!!! 📚 5y
rretzler Never read any of them but War and Peace and Don Quixote have been in my TBR forever. 🤣 5y
bromeliad @CrowCAH thank you!! 5y
bromeliad @rretzler right?? Same here! 5y
Emilymdxn I loved Don Quixote it‘s an absolute scream! 5y
Lcsmcat I haven‘t read any of these 6, but I‘m the same way with tackling the chunksters over the summer. I‘m reading The Magic Mountain and Of Human Bondage this summer. Previous summer hits for me include Anna Karenina and Les Misérables. 5y
bromeliad @Lcsmcat Anna Karenina and Les Mis were the same for me! Loved both of them. 5y
saresmoore I‘m a big fan of Quixote. I recently read all of Genji—ALL OF IT—and it was pretty brutal. So much misogyny for so many pages. But, still, an impressive feat of storytelling and the history is amazing, so I‘m glad I read it. 5y
Daisey I also read Genji earlier this year and although it was often tough, I truly enjoyed the overall experience. If you decide to read it, I would definitely recommend going back through the hashtag #Genji here on Litsy, and you can even look at posts made in reference to specific chapters. 5y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Of these I‘ve only read War and Peace (and I don‘t recommend that you waste your time with it 😆) 5y

Whoa. What a twisty, bizarre, powerful book. Ondjaki has serious literary teeth. It started strong and got better as it went. #Angola #readaroundtheworld #readharder

I see descriptions like this often enough that it's got me thinking about starting up a literary cooking hobby... 🤔

Andrea4 When I was, say, 13 or so, I thought it was cool to try the foods or snacks I read about it books. Pretzels and mustard were a hit! Molasses in warmed milk was decidedly NOT. 🤣 5y
bromeliad @Andrea4 😂 classic! 5y
Andrea4 @bromeliad I didn't even like milk so why did I think I'd like molasses in it...especially when I didn't like those Halloween molasses candies!!?? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 5y
