Misery | Stephen King
The #1 national bestseller about a famous novelist held hostage by his number one fan and suffering a frightening case of writers blockthat could prove fatal. One of Stephen Kings bestgenuinely scary (USA TODAY).Paul Sheldon is a bestselling novelist who has finally met his number one fan. Her name is Annie Wilkes, and she is more than a rabid readershe is Pauls nurse, tending his shattered body after an automobile accident. But she is also furious that the author has killed off her favorite character in his latest book. Annie becomes his captor, keeping him prisoner in her isolated house. Annie wants Paul to write a book that brings Misery back to lifejust for her. She has a lot of ways to spur him on. One is a needle. Another is an axe. And if they dont work, she can get really nasty. Terrifying (San Francisco Chronicle), dazzlingly well-written (The Indianapolis Star), and truly gripping (Publishers Weekly), Misery is classic Stephen King...full of twists and turns and mounting suspense (The Boston Globe).

Misery moves a lot faster than the other Stephen King novel I‘ve read, but that‘s not surprising really, given that it‘s a third of the length and only has two central characters. Unfortunately, despite having a narrower focus, King really doesn‘t flesh out his characters as fully as you‘d hope. Maybe I‘m jaded from reading too many more recent and more intricate thrillers. Okay, so this one started a little slow for me and I was wondering how King was going to make the plot line last for 400 pages, but then it picked up and I became engrossed in the story. FYI - there is gore in this one for anyone who doesn‘t do gore. #teamslaughter #scarathlon

Only good ol‘ Uncle Stevie could write a book with only two characters and it be based in one house, and still make it horrifically gripping. I thought I knew crazy - but then I was introduced to Annie Wilkes. Yikes! I actually had to glance down at my legs whilst reading, just to make sure they were still there. I‘ve read a handful of King books, and this fares as probably my second favourite. (After IT, of course). Expectedly amazing.

A suspenseful engrossing novel by Stephen King that kept me guessing until the end. There is nothing supernatural. It is simply about the darkest and most nightmarish aspects of the human constitution. It's a very closely centred novel, focusing nearly entirely on one room of a house and two characters, yet the undeniable malice lurking behind even the most innocuous of pages ensures that it never becomes tedious or boring.

My first time reading this classic and it did not disappoint! Some twists and turns had me actually gasping or yelling “no!” out loud. I got a little bored when I had to read parts of the protagonist‘s novel and it took a bit for me to really get into the book, but the parts with Paul and Annie were captivating and I couldn‘t put the book down in the second half.

I really did enjoy this book when Annie was around and the parts that were really intense or just crazy. But the parts he wrote of the book Misery or sometimes when he was just thinking in his head, drowned on and on. I feel like some of it could have been cut to make it better and more fast paced. All in all, I liked the book and gave it a 4⭐

I‘m glad I finally read this classic Stephen King novel! I really loved the tension in this book and was on the edge of my seat whenever Annie was around, but reading the chapters of “Misery‘s Return” ruined that tension and took me out of the story. I can see why Paul didn‘t want to continue writing the series! 4⭐️

What an absolutely savage story. Annie Wilkes is the stuff of nightmares.

Imagine being in a car accident and instead of waking up in a hospital you wake up in the house of your ‘number one fan‘ who also happens to be a serial killing nurse/nutter.

I‘m looking forward to watching Kathy Bates play Wilkes in the adaptation - I have a feeling I won‘t be disappointed!

This is my second Stephen King book and it‘s fantastic. Misery follows author Paul Sheldon who finds himself in Annie Wilkes house. She refuses to let Paul go causing a series of terrifying events. The characters are so well written that without realizing you are already part of the story. The book had me completely on edge all the time and it‘s now one of my favorite books. Stephen King is a great author and this book is just amazing :)

I don‘t usually do well with King. Misery was a more ‘realistic‘ novel and so the thriller and psychological terror aspect was more my thing. Annie Wilkes is a character 😳. Definitely one of the more memorable fictional psychos out there.

King says that this is partially inspired by the flack he received by fans for his fantasy novel, Eyes of the Dragon. Its sobering to think that this book may not be as fictional as we like to think. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

BarbaraBB Great review. This was for me too one of the few SK books I actually liked. 1y
StellaDz @BarbaraBB thank you! I generally don‘t do well reading horror, so I generally don‘t make it through for that reason. Sometimes though... it‘s the endings! Ugh Under the Dome I got 70% in, gave up, and then googled the ending and got so mad but glad that I didn‘t waste anymore time on it. I have Gerald‘s Game so I might give that one a go. Seems along the same thriller/psychological vein. 1y

This book is about a famous author named Paul Sheldon who gets into a car crash and his biggest fan Annie Wilkes comes and brings her to her house that is on a farm. She has this weird obsession over him and finds out that he is killing off one of the characters in his book. She gets really mad and makes him start writing a book for her about whatever she wants. If you like books that are thrilling you will like this book. (Rest in comments)

Allyson Frayn A theme in the novel is possessiveness, Annie is very possessive of Paul, she made him burn up one of his rough copies of one his books and also made him write her a whole new book. The point of view in this story is first person. There is lots of metaphors, hyperboles and foreshadowing used. (edited) 2y

I raced through this truly frightening story of a writer held hostage by his “number one” fan and forced to write a sequel. Sounds like an understatement but I don‘t want to give away too much for those who still haven‘t read this.
