Born with Teeth
Born with Teeth: A Memoir | Kate Mulgrew
96 posts | 81 read | 116 to read
Raised by unconventional Irish Catholics who knew "how to drink, how to dance, how to talk, and how to stir up the devil," Kate Mulgrew grew up with poetry and drama in her bones. But in her mother, a would-be artist burdened by the endless arrival of new babies, young Kate saw the consequences of a dream deferred. Determined to pursue her own no matter the cost, at 18 she left her small Midwestern town for New York, where, studying with the legendary Stella Adler, she learned the lesson that would define her as an actress: "Use it," Adler told her. Whatever disappointment, pain, or anger life throws in your path, channel it into the work. It was a lesson she would need. At twenty-two, just as her career was taking off, she became pregnant and gave birth to a daughter. Having already signed the adoption papers, she was allowed only a fleeting glimpse of her child. As her star continued to rise, her life became increasingly demanding and fulfilling, a whirlwind of passionate love affairs, life-saving friendships, and bone-crunching work. Through it all, Mulgrew remained haunted by the loss of her daughter, until, two decades later, she found the courage to face the past and step into the most challenging role of her life, both on and off screen. We know Kate Mulgrew for the strong women she's played--Captain Janeway on Star Trek; the tough-as-nails "Red" on Orange is the New Black. Now, we meet the most inspiring and memorable character of all: herself. By turns irreverent and soulful, laugh-out-loud funny and heart-piercingly sad, BORN WITH TEETH is the breathtaking memoir of a woman who dares to live life to the fullest, on her own terms.

The title of this boon caught my attention, not knowing much of Kate Mulgrew, she‘s Red in Orange is the New Black, she was the first woman Star Trek captain, as well as many other earlier roles in TV, stage and film. She had a tragic, wild upbringing, encouraged and inspired by her intuitive mother to pursue acting. I really enjoyed this and wanted to hear more about Kate.

Absolutely beautiful narration by Mrs. Mulgrew👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I loved this one so much! It was like having coffee with Captain Janeway👩🏼‍🚀 I need more of her soothing voice😌

This book has been on my elib wishlist for so long and this month I stacked a few of those books to my #Bookspin list - it felt every bit as good as working thru my physical TBR. ...I grew up with the ABC lineup of soap operas, and I‘ve never seen Kate perform outside her 2 years on Ryan‘s Hope. This was a fascinating memoir - I like her. She really was born with teeth!

Lindy I listened to this in audio and loved hearing her read her own work. Mulgrew has a distinctive voice that brought me back to my years of watching Star Trek Voyager, where she was Captain Janeway. 5y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Oooh! Yet another one that I will have to try out the audio for if she‘s reading it! Love her from Star Trek! ❤️ 5y

marleed @Lindy @Bookwyrm42 @SamAnne @Megabooks. Her voice is so wonderful - I wish she read more books! Her story is so interesting. I can‘t imagine having a sibling die while I was still a child or a ho I‘d be as an adult had I reluctantly given up a child. I love how she tells her life. 5y
Megabooks She does do some VO work on books. Look her up on audible. Also, she wrote a second book about her parents. 5y

What a storyteller Kate is! She is a such a fierce women and actress! So many tragic things happened in her life. Her acting skills fill up the bridge on Voyager and I am drawn to her voice and way she holds herself and this memoir helps get a look into her personal life and reasons behind why she such a force on the stage.

MemoirsForMe Kate is the best narrator! 🙌🏻I loved this book too. 5y

⭐⭐⭐ (3)

Wish it was more about her career than her love life. She's a great writer, told a fabulous story. It just wasn't what I wanted. I did enjoy reading about her eccentric family, and the adoption and reunion story was touching, as was the heartbreaking beginning stages of her mom's Alzheimers. Disappointed that she didn't even mention the Hepburn play, though. Loved what little bit of Trek she included. #mttbrchallenge2020 #WomensMonth

Now that I finally finished my Feb reading, I decided to do a mini challenge for myself for #WomensHistoryMonth. I looked at my physical #TBR stack and found 4 books written by women. Adding one more from my Overdrive wishlist to make it 5, I then used www.randomresult.com to pick which I should read first. I doubt will get to all five, especially since I'm waiting on Bel Canto and another book on hold, but this is a fun way to focus. Cont. ⬇️

SleepyDragon ⬆️ Decided to shelve the Neil Patrick Harris autobio till next month. (Sorry Doogie.) Feel the need to focus on female writers this month, but also wanted to stay focused on my TBR reading. Been a bit too focused on Overdrive so far, and want to get to some of my physical stack. Do you have any special reads lined up for March? 5y

I didn't know who Kate Mulgrew was before reading this book. I've never watched Star Trek Voyager or Orange is The New Black, but when you have a weakness for memoirs and find a copy at the dollar store, you take a chance.

This was beautifully written and kept me interested. The daughter Kate gave up for adoption was a major theme. I enjoyed the photos at the beginning of most of the chapters.

Another score from the Dollar Tree!

This is Kate Mulgrew's memoir covering her life from birth to around 1999, while in the midst of her stint as Captain Janeway on Star Trek : Voyager.

This book was a real page turner. The prose flows easily, this feels like it was written by a trained actor who is a fan of poetry. She approaches her life story in a straight-forward, no-nonsense manner and doesn't pull any punches. The relationship drama didn‘t interest me but I liked it overall.

Mulgrew is both a talented actress and writer! I really appreciated this memoir because she's so honest, sharing events even when they don't portray her in the greatest light. She has lived a privileged life since birth but has overcome many heartbreaking events and worked hard for her success on stage and screen.

What??? After 11 hours of endless storytelling you decide to stop smack in middle of the story!!!?!!??
I was not familiar with Kate Mulgrew the actress before picking up her memoir. She absolutely has had an astonishing career and distinctive life but truthfully I didn‘t walk away a fan. Her ability to spin a yarn was wonderful & her sultry voice was tranquilizing but I found myself often feeling sorry for her kids & the choices she made. 👇🏽

Cinfhen Kudos for putting it all out there, but I preferred Sally Fields‘s heartfelt memoir over this one. 5y
CoffeeAndABook That does sound frustrating & not quite satisfying. But at least she had a sultry voice - I love listening to people with great voices, so much so that I wouldn‘t care about the content at all if it was soothing. Hope you had a happy Chanukah 🕎 Cindy!!! 😘 (edited) 5y

Cinfhen She has such a great audio voice @lele1432 @Cathythoughts and she‘s spunky as hell but I also thought she had a sense of entitlement and superiority that came across as a little arrogant where Sally Fields felt much more humbled and down to earth. 5y

I flipping love Kate Mulgrew! And I've long loved her on audio (seriously, her reading of NOS4A2 by Joe Hill is amazing), and I've had this in my audio tbr for awhile. Her memoir is fascinating! Her family, her career, her lovers, her children (including the one she gave up for adoption while filming Ryan's Hope) and just whatever magic spark that makes up Kate Mulgrew makes for a really great bio!

While I found most of actress Kate Mulgrew‘s memoir engaging, I had trouble with the bookends. It took me a little while to settle into her story; despite a number of heartrending hardships, Mulgrew has absolutely led a life of privilege. It‘s a tale of nightcaps, furs, & dancing with the Kennedys. 🙄 But it‘s also the story of a large Irish Catholic family, art, sisterhood, motherhood, daughterhood, gender politics, & passion.

*Cont‘d below👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: It‘s well-written & performed eloquently & with grace. I didn‘t always like Mulgrew...but I think that‘s almost to her credit. By the time the ending came around (abruptly, I might add), I was sad that my listening experience was over. I can only imagine how much more compelling it would be for a die-hard Trekkie. I‘ve only known Mulgrew as Red (OITNB) but I have to admit, I‘m a little bit tempted to boldly ENGAGE with the rest of her career. 6y
Geeklet I think I‘d really love this. I‘ve liked Kate Mulgrew since I first saw Voyager as a kid. I really like her voice too. I might have to pick it up on Audible one day when I have extra credits. 6y

Geeklet @monalyisha Her narration is the only way I finished The Fireman. I abandoned the book about 1/3rd the way through. I got it on Audible and was able to finish it that way. (edited) 6y

daena Great review. I‘m compelled to listen to this one. 6y
monalyisha @daena Do it! 😉 6y
DivaDiane I hadn‘t watched any of OITNB, only ALL of Voyager and I loved her somewhat abrasive personality. I HATE her voice, but she is a capable actress and narrator. I think she could make a cook book sound dramatic! You are right, that her life was fraught not so much with hardship (in the grand scheme of things) but rather privilege. That said, everyone has their cross to bear and the story of what happened while she was on Ryan‘s Hope was horrible. 6y

🎧 Kate Mulgrew‘s memoir has an Irish storyteller‘s lyricism and enchantment, and listening to her talk about her childhood and career was wonderful; but hearing how she put her career above all else was more than a bit dismaying at times. There are feminist tones that are at times amplified to the point of suspect self-righteousness but not overtly strident. Overall a Pick for the honest writing & narration.

kwmg40 I‘ve not read her memoirs but she is one of my favourite audiobook narrators ... and of course I loved her as Janeway! 7y

I downloaded this audiobook on impulse only because I watched Voyager with @MamaBear when I was growing up. Turns out Mulgrew is also a fantastic writer with a fascinating story to tell. I didn‘t agree with a lot of her life choices and often found myself yelling, “Kate, what are you doing?” And yet I never contemplated returning the book without finishing it. I loved hearing about her childhood, her career, and her train wreck of a love life.

I‘m really surprised this has a 100% rating. And isn‘t it funny that despite the fact that Mulgrew was born with teeth she shows nary a one in the above photo? 😳 As stated previously, I really enjoyed the beginning of the book but when the audiobook finished I almost threw my phone across the room. Do I really need to hear about every love of her life? Every passionate kiss? The first quarter of the book was really interesting. The next 2 quarters tedious. Hoping the last quarter offers something interesting about Star Trek and Orange is the New Black. That‘s the only reason I‘m hanging in there. That and the fact that it‘s something to listen to while I clean the Airbnb.

Sometimes what I‘ve listened to just floats away. It has to be really compelling. For instance, someone mentioned the incident on Ryan‘s Hope. I have no memory of that at all. 😁. 6y

I love Mulgrew‘s mother. Despite having an inordinate number of children, she was a voracious reader. She set aside time as her own each day when she would sit with a book and expect to be left alone.

MidnightBookGirl I have this on my audio tbr. Love her! Plus, Mulgrew narrates the heck out of NOS4A2 by Joe Hill. 7y
Suet624 She does a great job narrating this and I love her writing, especially about her early life. 7y

She always sleeps just out of cuddle range. Today is my first day at my internship. This cuts into my reading time 😐

I learned to love Kate Mulgrew as Captain Janeway. I had no inkling of any of the other work she had done before or since. Her life seems full of pivotal events and tumultuous relationships. But her writing is so evocative, at times whimsical and at others exciting or brutally honest, that I think she could make eating a cucumber sandwich sound exciting.

DivaDiane I find it astonishing that despite all the gossip-worthy events of her life, that the media were so reticent. Mulgrew says they were respectful back then (in the 70‘s) and had integrity.

She narrates the audio version herself, which is also a huge dollop of icing on the cake, and there‘s an interview conducted by Rosie O‘Donnell at the end which is wonderful.

Reggie Have you seen her on Orange is the New Black? She‘s so great in there. I saw her do an interview and just kept thinking how articulate she was . 7y
DivaDiane @Reggie I just started watching it! It‘s really good. I‘m enjoying her performance! 7y

I am loving this memoir! I can‘t remember who recommended it to me, but whoever you are, thank you! I‘m listening to it and Mulgrew does the reading herself. It‘s brilliant. She‘s an eloquent writer and she knows how to bring out the high drama. I had never heard of her before ST:Voyager but I loved her.

Heideschrampf I love myself a good female autobiography, thanks! 7y
DivaDiane @Heideschrampf My pleasure! 7y
megt Loved this! She‘s an excellent narrator and her life is so fascinating. 7y

Has anyone else found the Kindle Daily Deals and Monthly deals irresistible? Because they've been knocking them out of the park.

2BR02B Checking kindle and audible daily deals is one of the first things I do every morning. So many excellent buys. 7y

“Grief moves through the system much as love does. It seeks expression. So I put my grief where it naturally belonged, in the company of an old and experienced wound.”

I could listen to Mulgrew tell stories all day. Her voice is rough, yet soothing. Her writing is lovely. She‘s had an intriguing life, but something throws me off a bit. The ego, maybe? Nonetheless, I liked this memoir.

BestDogDad I love Captain Janeway! I found this at a used bookstore, but I think I would rather hear her tell her story. It sounds good! 7y
britt_brooke @JeffKoeppen Her narration is excellent! 7y
CouronneDhiver Ooo! Sounds good 7y

britt_brooke @CouronneDhiver It‘s a great memoir! Her writing and narration are flawless. 7y
monalyisha SUCH an ego! And everything seems like a performance with her. I especially had little sympathy when she provided the details of her divorce. Her ex‘s point about theirs being a “shared life” was pretty sound. But I still dug it! (edited) 6y
britt_brooke @monalyisha Yes, total egomaniac! 😆 It‘s all very dramatic/theatrical. 6y
monalyisha @britt_brooke I‘ve been researching the years after the audiobook ends. Reading about the fate of her “little mother” is so sad. 😭 Their relationship was fascinating. 6y

One of my favorite audiobooks of the year so far. Kate Mulgrew just has one of those voices that I could listen to all day. And her life has been so fascinating! Loved listening to the story of her life off screen. If you're at all interested in her story I highly recommend the audio.
