@Puddlejumper @originalcyn620

Okay, question on points. How do we count a reading challenge prompt. I see how to count a bingo, and I see how readathons, but I have been through the google file and do not see who we cant a prompt for points. Just getting my math correct.

#hauntedshelf #deadserious

PuddleJumper What are you counting as a reading prompt? I usually count them as readathons 1mo
OriginalCyn620 Yes, I‘m confused about what you mean as reading challenge prompts. Unless you‘re talking about how to count the books you read. If it‘s from your TBR, 25 pts. A spooky/autumn-themed book (not from your TBR), 20 pts. Books not from your TBR or not spooky/autumn-themed, 10 pts. And every post also get 1 extra point! Please correct me if I‘m wrong @PuddleJumper! 1mo
LibrarianRyan @OriginalCyn620 @puddlejumper

well on the list of readatons you add things like Storygraph Reading challenges. Take the Formidable challenge. Those challenges are not done by time, but by book. They are almost like a block on a bingo board but not, since they are not a bingo board. it would be like a Prompt maze prompt.
1mo
See All 8 Comments
PuddleJumper @LibrarianRyan Ok, I understand what you mean. I would count them as a readathon, that is what I\'m doing for the Spooky Maze one. If this runs again I\'m happy to add in extra points for things like that since you wouldn\'t get the bingo board extra points, right now though count it as a readathon 1mo
OriginalCyn620 Oh, I see what you mean now! 1mo
Faranae @LibrarianRyan @puddlejumper If it helps any, the Formidable does have a bingo board option (I think I added it to the drive?) though the Ultimate doesn\'t since it\'s a year long and 52 prompts. I assumed \“readathons\“ basically meant anything that\'s not a bingo board, at least for HauntedShelf. Sorry for causing confusion! 1mo
LibrarianRyan @Faranae your good. I‘m so behind in logging I may not even have that many open spaces but I do t want to count anything g wrong. 1mo

suvata @JanuarieTimewalker13 everyone says it‘s so good. I really do I have to dig into it soon. 1mo
wanderinglynn Ooh, so many to choose from! It‘s hard to pick one fave. Right now it‘s a toss-up between Ilona Andrews‘s Kate Daniels series or Patricia Briggs‘s Mercy Thompson series 1mo
suvata @wanderinglynn i‘ve not heard of either of those. What genre are they? 1mo
Ruthiella Too many to name! Patrick O‘Brian‘s Aubrey Maturin books, Elizabeth Peter‘s Amelia Peabody series, Robin Hobb‘s Realm of the Elderlings novels, those are the current ones I am working my way through. 1mo
suvata @Ruthiella I never heard of any of those either. Looks like I‘m going to have to rebuild my TBR. (edited) 1mo
dabbe The canon of Sherlock Holmes, of course! #sherlocked 🖤 1mo
suvata @dabbe Absolutely. Sherlock is timeless. 1mo
wanderinglynn @suvata urban fantasy (set in the modern world but full of magic & supernatural beings like werewolves, vampires) 1mo
wanderinglynn @dabbe 🙌🏻 excellent choice! #iamSHERlocked 1mo
suvata @wanderinglynn I haven‘t read a lot of urban fantasy but the few that I have read I really enjoyed. Will check out the ones you mentioned. Thanks. 1mo

suvata @ShelleyBooksie i‘ve read many of these, but the only series I completed was Outlander (still waiting for that final book). I gave up on Stephanie Plum after about 18 or so. (edited) 1mo

I, personally, prefer silence, but soft background music is also nice. 🎶 I also like to read outside, so maybe, nature is my favorite background noise.

KadaGul @suvata It all depends on my mood 😍and the type of book 📚 I am reading 📖 6mo
suvata @KadaGul yeah, that makes sense 6mo
DuckOfDoom I always preferred silence, but now I can't focus if there is not some ambient music in the background 6mo

#TLT #ThreeListThursday

Thanks for the tag @Lizpixie In your honour I limited my choices to Aussie music.

Ita - Cold Chisel (I believe, I believe in what she says, yes I do!)
Love Is (What I Say) - INXS (the extended remix on the cassette only release Dekadance which I listened to obsessively in 1985)
Love In Motion - Icehouse (I wish the Chrissie Amphlett duet re-recording was 80s rather than 92, but the original version will do)

2. Rock The Casbah - The Clash
3. Don‘t Believe Anymore - Icehouse

All are subject to change, music has always been my escape(along with books of course!)I have a large Spotify playlist of most of my fave 80s tunes with a few early 90s ones sneaking in.

vivastory I have 3 answers, all mystery/ thrillers: I'd love another book by JoAnn Chaney featuring her detectives that were featured in “What You Don't Know.“ I read this 7 years ago & still think about it from time to time. I would also like a follow-up to SA Cosby's “Blacktop Wasteland.“ This remains my favorite of his & I know that he has mentioned in passing returning to the characters in the future. Finally, I would like a sequel to David Heska (CONT) 6mo
vivastory Wanbil Weiden's “Winter Counts.“ He has said that he is working on it, but it has been a few years since he has provided an update. 6mo

First off, no that's not one of my cats.

My question: Is "cringe" the new standard for #RomCom?

I'm working my way through a few "hilariously funny" contemporary romance ARCs and they are giving me second hand embarrassment. I don't think any of the supposed to be funny stuff is actually funny. Is this the new normal?

And yes, you can tell me I'm a curmudgeon, though I don't think that's the problem here.

Cinfhen Hahaha 🤣 I don‘t have the answers but this made me smile 😃 1y
BookLove4Ever Most romcoms make me smile rather than laugh, and I agree some rely heavily on the cringe factor to come off as funny, but it doesn‘t land. I enjoy them more as a lighthearted read. 😁 1y
Amiable I think it depends on what‘s making you cringe? I tend to not read very much romance at all because I don‘t care for the genre as a whole. Is it the romance aspects that are cringey? Or the characters themselves? Or the situations the author puts them in? 1y
See All 26 Comments
TrishB I don‘t really read rom coms- but I have yet to laugh at any book that says ‘laugh out loud‘ on the cover. 1y
RaeLovesToRead @TrishB Haha, what Trish said! The last rom com I read (if you count Love Hypothesis as a straight up romance) was called You Deserve Each Other. It was kinda funny. What are you cringing at in particular? And what, to you, makes a good romance novel? The spice? The banter? 1y
julesG @Amiable @TrishB @RaeLovesToRead - in two of the ARCs I read the female MC had to be socially awkward to the power of ten. Not just your run of the mill let's blurt out every thought without a filter, but that plus hiding under the table/behind a rock/... whispershouting inappropriate names for the male MC in his earshot ⬇️ 1y
julesG and then blushing and trying to cover it up by pretending to be drunk. Which then caused the usual slapstick falling onto him and blurting more inappropriate thoughts. That's what makes possibly funny situation cringe-y for me.⬇️ 1y
julesG Laugh out loud only happens when there's good banter. But where there's not a single natural sounding dialogue there is hardly any banter. 1y
julesG Spice doesn't bother me. Unless it's badly written and/or close to an anatomy lesson. 1y
julesG I really object to books labelled 'hilarious' that just aren't. Then I'd rather read a witty non-fiction 1y
julesG I want more honest blurbs on book covers. 1y
Susanita The commentators for the ballgame I watched earlier were talking about in-game celebrations. One said his nine-year-old daughter calls them “cringe,” and he agreed. 1y
Larkken I hear you, as I keep reading the more tropes I dislike have turned to cringe! Socially awkward ladies are one, so is thinking the sibling is a lover… easily fixable misunderstandings? I‘m sure there are more. 1y
RaeLovesToRead Speaking of awkward stuff that happens on dates... sometimes life imitates art https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-41167296.amp 1y
Amiable @julesG I think it‘s awesome that you can articulate so perfectly what you like/don‘t like in a book. A lot of people say “I just don‘t like the book” but can‘t put their finger on why. 1y
CoverToCoverGirl @RaeLovesToRead Oh my goodness! My husband and I are laughing so hard we‘re crying! Truth is stranger than fiction! 🤣🤣 1y
RaeLovesToRead @CoverToCoverGirl hehe, I know right? 😄🤣 1y
Hooked_on_books I think we should start a whole social media account of faux honest blurbs on book covers. 😆 I don‘t read rom-coms typically, but I‘ve noticed this type of thing in some other books and I feel like it‘s related to my age. Often, these characters are in their 20s when the social awkwardness and lack of confidence is so pervasive. There are things I can still relate to in those characters, but I‘m at the point where I want more depth and nuance. 1y
CarolynM What I look for in any comedy is wit. Physical comedy, slapstick, humiliation/embarrassment etc doesn‘t do it for me, but I know a lot of people prefer that. It seems to me there are a lot more romcoms in the latter category than the former☹️ 1y
batsy I don't read many romcoms but looking at what you wrote in the comments... I agree stuff like that makes me cringe, too. I feel like writers are trying to emulate the physical comedy in romcom films and it does not translate well into novels? Unless you're a very skilled writer, perhaps. But also humour is so subjective. And I think a lot of it is generational too, so I'm a curmudgeon in many ways myself lol. 1y
julesG @RaeLovesToRead 😂😂😂😂 I think I just woke my neighbours laughing so loud. 1y
julesG @Amiable I can't always say what bothers me about a book. But with those ARCs it was easy to nail down. Like @CarolynM said, wit is funny for me, slapstick not so much. It works in films, but needs a very skilled writer to come across funny in a novel. Thanks, @batsy for voicing my thoughts. 1y
julesG @Hooked_on_books now I feel old. 🤪 No, you're right, age and life experience factor in too. 1y
Hooked_on_books Well, I‘m perimenopausal and just don‘t have time for that shit anymore. 😂 1y
julesG @Hooked_on_books Same! 😂😂 1y
Amiable @Hooked_on_books That is exactly why I don‘t read YA —I‘m way past the age where I can still relate or care about the trials and tribulations that a teenager or 20-something goes through as part of figuring out how to get their shit together. 😀 1y

📚The Forgotten Garden- Kate Morton. Brilliant aussie writer.
✍🏼Raymond.E.Feist. Magician is still one of the best epic fantasy‘s written.
🎥Firefly! Of course🙌
🎤Foo Fighters forever! Taylor Hawkins will be missed always💔
🎵Friend of a Friend- Foo Fighters. Dave‘s love letter to Kurt. Another star that burned too bright for this world.🤘

#ManicMonday #letterF

CBee Did you watch any of the tribute concerts? Taylor‘s son played the drums on “Hero” 💔 2y
Lizpixie @CBee of course! He was magnificent, his dad would be so proud. He pounded those skins harder than Dave himself! 2y
CBee @Lizpixie he was!! I thought the same, he was really hitting those hard! Can‘t imagine what they‘re all going through 💔🙁 2y

Lizpixie @CBee apparently Dave just lost his mom too who he was really close to. He looks so drawn & sad😢 2y
CBee @Lizpixie his mom?? Oh no, poor Dave!! I hadn‘t heard about that 💔💔💔 2y
Lizpixie @CBee yeah. She raised him on her own after his dad left when he was 7. Must be tearing him apart losing both her & his best friend. 2y
CBee @Lizpixie I listened to his book a few months back and loved it. He talks about his mom with such love ❤️ 2y
Lizpixie @CBee me too, it was my 1st book of the year. He must miss her so much. I lost my mum recently and I tear up at the oddest moments, like the royal family vigil today over the queens coffin. Had me bawling so bad.😭 2y
wanderinglynn @Lizpixie @CBee I saw that he lost her in late July. She was 84. So sad! She seems like such an interesting person. 2y
CBee @Lizpixie I get it! I lost my mom in 2020 and my dad in 2021, so I feel a bit of kinship with her children, losing their parents so close together. It‘s hard anytime, but to lose them both in a little over a year….. it‘s immense. So yes, I‘ve been teary a bit more than usual the past few days 🙁 2y
CBee @wanderinglynn she seemed so great! Always so supportive of Dave and his biggest fan ♥️ 2y
Suet624 I‘m a huge Foos fan and I still watch videos of theirs to get me going each morning. I miss Taylor. Great videos on YouTube with Dave and his mom. She wrote a book too which I haven‘t read yet but want to. 2y

What don‘t I collect? The tops of my library shelves hold my collection of literary mugs, POP vinyls etc. There‘s a giant novelty mug full of bookmarks on my desk, there‘s trinket dishes, stickers, magnets, my huge Potterverse collection including wands, and beside the library door is a display of pin flags that are full with more in progress hanging on the door.I have a box full of book sleeves. And there‘s stationery….🤔 #LittensWantToKnow

Cinfhen I hear the new King is amazing @KristiAhlers !!!! Im dying to know what you‘re reading @Megabooks - how can you read 5 books at once?? 2y
KristiAhlers @Cinfhen it was amazing. And I honestly am not a fan of Kings work in the past. But for some reason this one grabbed me in the first two pages and held me captive. I even…wait for it…made space on my keeper bookcase for it. So there ya go 🤣 2y
Cinfhen Oh wow!!!! That‘s HIGH PRAISE @KristiAhlers I might need to add to my TBR 2y

1. I‘m actually reading one right now! I started the ebook of Five Days At Memorial by Sheri Fink on Scribd after watching the first eps on AppleTV. As a chronic care patient, the thought of being caught in something like that terrifies me.
2. Salvage The Bones by Jesmyn Ward is one I have to read.
3. Ironically, it‘s rain!

#SundayFunday

Kappadeemom Memorial was a hard read ☹️ 2y
