#TLT #ThreeListThursday

Thanks for the tag @Lizpixie In your honour I limited my choices to Aussie music.

Ita - Cold Chisel (I believe, I believe in what she says, yes I do!)
Love Is (What I Say) - INXS (the extended remix on the cassette only release Dekadance which I listened to obsessively in 1985)
Love In Motion - Icehouse (I wish the Chrissie Amphlett duet re-recording was 80s rather than 92, but the original version will do)

1. Together In Electric Dreams - The Human League/Giorgio Moroder.
2. Rock The Casbah - The Clash
3. Don‘t Believe Anymore - Icehouse

All are subject to change, music has always been my escape(along with books of course!)I have a large Spotify playlist of most of my fave 80s tunes with a few early 90s ones sneaking in.

My answer: Peter Pan

Soubhiville Hmmmm. The Starless Sea. 4d
suvata @Soubhiville Good one 4d

dabbe @vivastory #doh! I should have thought of that since I just voted for it for the #CampLitsy24 read! 🤩😂😘 4d
dabbe @suvata Ain't nobohdy gonna civilize Huck! 🤩😂😘 4d
vivastory I have 3 answers, all mystery/ thrillers: I'd love another book by JoAnn Chaney featuring her detectives that were featured in “What You Don't Know.“ I read this 7 years ago & still think about it from time to time. I would also like a follow-up to SA Cosby's “Blacktop Wasteland.“ This remains my favorite of his & I know that he has mentioned in passing returning to the characters in the future. Finally, I would like a sequel to David Heska (CONT) 4d
vivastory Wanbil Weiden's “Winter Counts.“ He has said that he is working on it, but it has been a few years since he has provided an update. 4d
suvata @vivastory well, maybe you will get lucky with 4d
vivastory @suvata Of the three that I listed it does seem to be the most likely 4d
Ruthiella Well…maybe GRRM could finish the Game of Thrones series? 😆 4d
RaeLovesToRead I can think of more sequels that shouldn't have been attempted 🤣🤣 4d

!) The Weirdstone of Brisingamen by Alan Garner. It infected my brain in a way usually only scary visuals do.

2) I would once have said an emphatic NO WAY, but I have learned to enjoy small amounts of the creepy variety. Still hate gore and grisly -- body horror is right out.

3) Fingersmith by Sarah Waters. It's so dark and twisty and romantic.

First off, no that's not one of my cats.

My question: Is "cringe" the new standard for #RomCom?

I'm working my way through a few "hilariously funny" contemporary romance ARCs and they are giving me second hand embarrassment. I don't think any of the supposed to be funny stuff is actually funny. Is this the new normal?

And yes, you can tell me I'm a curmudgeon, though I don't think that's the problem here.

Cinfhen Hahaha 🤣 I don‘t have the answers but this made me smile 😃 11mo
BookLove4Ever Most romcoms make me smile rather than laugh, and I agree some rely heavily on the cringe factor to come off as funny, but it doesn‘t land. I enjoy them more as a lighthearted read. 😁 11mo
Amiable I think it depends on what‘s making you cringe? I tend to not read very much romance at all because I don‘t care for the genre as a whole. Is it the romance aspects that are cringey? Or the characters themselves? Or the situations the author puts them in? 11mo
See All 26 Comments
TrishB I don‘t really read rom coms- but I have yet to laugh at any book that says ‘laugh out loud‘ on the cover. 11mo
RaeLovesToRead @TrishB Haha, what Trish said! The last rom com I read (if you count Love Hypothesis as a straight up romance) was called You Deserve Each Other. It was kinda funny. What are you cringing at in particular? And what, to you, makes a good romance novel? The spice? The banter? 11mo
julesG @Amiable @TrishB @RaeLovesToRead - in two of the ARCs I read the female MC had to be socially awkward to the power of ten. Not just your run of the mill let's blurt out every thought without a filter, but that plus hiding under the table/behind a rock/... whispershouting inappropriate names for the male MC in his earshot ⬇️ 11mo
julesG and then blushing and trying to cover it up by pretending to be drunk. Which then caused the usual slapstick falling onto him and blurting more inappropriate thoughts. That's what makes possibly funny situation cringe-y for me.⬇️ 11mo
julesG Laugh out loud only happens when there's good banter. But where there's not a single natural sounding dialogue there is hardly any banter. 11mo
julesG Spice doesn't bother me. Unless it's badly written and/or close to an anatomy lesson. 11mo
julesG I really object to books labelled 'hilarious' that just aren't. Then I'd rather read a witty non-fiction 11mo
julesG I want more honest blurbs on book covers. 11mo
Susanita The commentators for the ballgame I watched earlier were talking about in-game celebrations. One said his nine-year-old daughter calls them “cringe,” and he agreed. 11mo
Larkken I hear you, as I keep reading the more tropes I dislike have turned to cringe! Socially awkward ladies are one, so is thinking the sibling is a lover… easily fixable misunderstandings? I‘m sure there are more. 11mo
RaeLovesToRead Speaking of awkward stuff that happens on dates... sometimes life imitates art https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-41167296.amp 11mo
Amiable @julesG I think it‘s awesome that you can articulate so perfectly what you like/don‘t like in a book. A lot of people say “I just don‘t like the book” but can‘t put their finger on why. 11mo
CoverToCoverGirl @RaeLovesToRead Oh my goodness! My husband and I are laughing so hard we‘re crying! Truth is stranger than fiction! 🤣🤣 11mo
RaeLovesToRead @CoverToCoverGirl hehe, I know right? 😄🤣 11mo
Hooked_on_books I think we should start a whole social media account of faux honest blurbs on book covers. 😆 I don‘t read rom-coms typically, but I‘ve noticed this type of thing in some other books and I feel like it‘s related to my age. Often, these characters are in their 20s when the social awkwardness and lack of confidence is so pervasive. There are things I can still relate to in those characters, but I‘m at the point where I want more depth and nuance. 11mo
CarolynM What I look for in any comedy is wit. Physical comedy, slapstick, humiliation/embarrassment etc doesn‘t do it for me, but I know a lot of people prefer that. It seems to me there are a lot more romcoms in the latter category than the former☹️ 11mo
batsy I don't read many romcoms but looking at what you wrote in the comments... I agree stuff like that makes me cringe, too. I feel like writers are trying to emulate the physical comedy in romcom films and it does not translate well into novels? Unless you're a very skilled writer, perhaps. But also humour is so subjective. And I think a lot of it is generational too, so I'm a curmudgeon in many ways myself lol. 11mo
julesG @RaeLovesToRead 😂😂😂😂 I think I just woke my neighbours laughing so loud. 11mo
julesG @Amiable I can't always say what bothers me about a book. But with those ARCs it was easy to nail down. Like @CarolynM said, wit is funny for me, slapstick not so much. It works in films, but needs a very skilled writer to come across funny in a novel. Thanks, @batsy for voicing my thoughts. 11mo
julesG @Hooked_on_books now I feel old. 🤪 No, you're right, age and life experience factor in too. 11mo
Hooked_on_books Well, I‘m perimenopausal and just don‘t have time for that shit anymore. 😂 11mo
julesG @Hooked_on_books Same! 😂😂 11mo
Amiable @Hooked_on_books That is exactly why I don‘t read YA —I‘m way past the age where I can still relate or care about the trials and tribulations that a teenager or 20-something goes through as part of figuring out how to get their shit together. 😀 11mo

KristiAhlers @Cinfhen it was amazing. And I honestly am not a fan of Kings work in the past. But for some reason this one grabbed me in the first two pages and held me captive. I even…wait for it…made space on my keeper bookcase for it. So there ya go 🤣 2y
Cinfhen Oh wow!!!! That‘s HIGH PRAISE @KristiAhlers I might need to add to my TBR 2y

1. I‘m actually reading one right now! I started the ebook of Five Days At Memorial by Sheri Fink on Scribd after watching the first eps on AppleTV. As a chronic care patient, the thought of being caught in something like that terrifies me.
2. Salvage The Bones by Jesmyn Ward is one I have to read.
3. Ironically, it‘s rain!

#SundayFunday

Kappadeemom Memorial was a hard read ☹️ 2y

📖 The Black Echo by Michael Connolly. 1st Bosch book & one of the best.
✍🏼 Alan Bradley. His Flavia de Luce novels are brilliant.
📺 The Blacklist. James Spader. Enough said.
🎸 Beck. Especially his Seachange album. Gorgeous.
🎤 Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty. That sax brings back the 70s for me.

#ManicMonday #letterB

vivastory One of my favorite concerts ever was seeing Beck in '97. The Roots opened & I actually got to meet them beforehand. 2y
Lizpixie @vivastory lucky you! It‘s so hard to go to great concerts in Aus, a lot of artists either don‘t come or when they do it gets sold out in minutes. Last one I went to was Ryan Adams at the Enmore Theatre in Newtown. It was fabulous. I really wanted to see the Foo Fighters this year but then Taylor died😢 2y
CBee Agree 100% with James Spader and Beck!! Good stuff 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Thanks for playing! 2y

1. And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. The best locked-room mystery ever written.
2. Sarah Addison Allen. Gorgeous whimsical writing.
3. Agatha Christie‘s Poirot. David Suchet IS Poirot.
4. AC/DC! Only with Bon Scott of course🤘
5. April Sun In Cuba-Dragon. Song of the aussie 70s.

1. Yes! Even though I‘ve been struggling with brain fog from illness, I try to at least listen to a few hrs of audiobook every day.
2. I‘m pretty much bedbound from illness now so it‘s the only thing that keeps me sane.
3. Magical realism for cheering me up & crime to help me think it could be worse!

Your turn @CarolynM @Cinfhen @Jeg

Cinfhen Love your answer to number 3! So sorry to hear you‘re not feeling well 😢 2y
Eggs Love #3! I hope your illness abates and that you are healing ❤️‍🩹 2y
Lizpixie @Cinfhen thanks lovely.😘❤️ @Eggs thank you! Unfortunately it‘s a chronic thing but on the plus side I‘m still here👍 2y

1. Magic of course! Watching Bewitched as a kid made me long to be a real witch my whole life!
2. So many. The Wheel Of Time series has a wonderful magic system, Sarah Addison Allen has some gorgeous books, the All Souls trilogy, the Sparrow Sisters duology, then there‘s single books like The Nature Of Witches, The Price Guide To The Occult, The Witches Heart, Warbreaker & how can I forget Harry Potter!

#Two4Tuesday

TheSpineView Loved Bewitched! Thanks for playing! 2y
Lizpixie And how could I forget the Practical Magic series! 2y

1. I like hardcovers now but it‘s mostly paperbacks in Aussie bookstores so I tend to buy from overseas online retailers. Otherwise if it‘s for a series I‘ve started collecting in paperbacks they‘ll do.
2. I read indoors coz of my health mostly but I do love to read outside sometimes.
3. Fall for sure. Autumn is my favourite time of the year, the changing trees, the cooler weather. Perfect.

#WondrousWednesday

Eggs Agree # 3 - the aromas, the activities, the holidays! 2y
Lizpixie @Eggs our Autumn holiday is Easter, which means the Royal Easter Show! Fairy Floss, Dagwood Dogs, Woodchopping, Farm animals & showbags🎡🍭🐄🪓🛍 2y

1. Yes! Being interrupted by someone who wants to have a conversation even though they can see you‘re deep into the last few chapters of a great story(I‘m looking at you hubby👀)
2. Signed first editions of The Wheel Of Time series & maybe a signed Dame Agatha too🤔

#Two4Tuesday

Bec_lectic Haha I was going to say the same as you for pet peeve and of course the guilty party is my husband who is a non-reader 😂😂😂 2y
Lizpixie @Bec_lectic yes! Are all non-readers like that? The hubby is the only one I actually know. You‘d think after 30yrs together he‘d have bloody learned🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y

2. Everywhere! There‘s bookcases in the lounge room, spare room, I have a library plus stacks in my bedroom & kitchen.📚📚📚
3. Every format. I have 1,000s of physical(hardback & paperback),1,000s of ebooks on my kobo & almost 400 audiobooks. Yes, I‘m obsessed🤷🏻‍♀️

1. I actually have no preference, either types are fine for me.
2. No unfortunately. I‘ve read translated books but I‘ve never learnt how to speak, read or write another language. Though I would love to learn! Russian has always fascinated me and Mandarin Chinese.
3. Most definitely a mood reader, I couldn‘t follow a list to save my life!
#WondrousWednesday

1. Wow, probably Dame Agatha honestly with a few crime writers who have written absurdly long detective series like Elizabeth George & Peter Robinson.
2. Right now, my library chair. But I wish I had a seaside or mountain cottage with a fireplace & big windows!
3. Oh yeah. As many as I possibly can🙌

#WondrousWednesday

truthinfiction I have read around 52 books by Dame Christie. 🙈 Her books make up basically 1/4th of the entire number of books I have read. I feel you on your wish to own a cottage in mountains. Let's keep hoping. 💗 2y
