All-of-a-Kind Family
All-of-a-Kind Family | Sydney Taylor
Meet the All-of-a-Kind Family -- Ella, Henny, Sarah, Charlotte, and Gertie -- who live with their parents in New York City at the turn of the century. Together they share adventures that find them searching for hidden buttons while dusting Mama's front parlor and visiting with the peddlers in Papa's shop on rainy days. The girls enjoy doing everything together, especially when it involves holidays and surprises. But no one could have prepared them for the biggest surprise of all!

I tried to think of other books beyond Jane Eyre, Little House on the Prairie, Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, and The Witch of Blackbird Pond (annual treasures growing up) and came up with these three books (series):

1. All-of-a-Kind Family by Sydney Taylor
2. Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
3. The Warrior's Apprentice by Lois McMaster Bujold

The first is from my childhood; the other two I read as an adult.

Thank you @Eggs for the WondrousWednesday tag! 🤗

1️⃣ Not at all. My dad said I was named for actress Deborah Kerr because he liked her, but they didn‘t even spell it the same! (I‘m Debra) The middle name Ann went with it.
(OK, bonus geek points if you know what movie this quote is from: “Oh God. Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. Is that Karr or Kerr?”😆

Thanks for the tags, @Eggs and @PageShifter! 🩶🖤🩶
1. Sort of. My mom and aunt were pregnant at roughly the same time. My aunt wanted a girl whom she planned on naming “Denise.“ My mom had me before my aunt had her child, and she named me “Denise“. Nice, Mom! Luckily, my aunt had a boy. 😂

Delightful story of a New York City family with 5 daughters and a 6th child on the way. We get a peak into their lives, their holidays, visits to the library etc. These kids love books, and for the most part love and protect each other.

It‘s such a delight to read my childhood favorites with my kids, but there‘s something even more wonderful in discovering a new treasure together. I don‘t know how I missed this a kid, but it‘s lovely & we‘ve already started the next book in the series! It‘s about a Jewish family of 5 little girls growing up on the Lower East Side of NYC in 1912. The storylines about the local librarian, scarlet fever & their friends Charlie were all memorable.

dabbe Oh, how I loved these books as a kid! I remember not knowing what Purim was, asking my mom (who also didn't know), and not knowing where or how to find out (the dark ages of no Internet). I finally just kept reading, and luckily used the context clues to figure it out. 🤩🤣😃 5mo

Though I‘ve reread this several times both as a child and as an adult, I never really get sick of it. It‘s actually an incredibly good piece of children‘s historical fiction giving you an insight into both NY‘s Lower East Side at the turn of the century, and into Jewish culture. I‘m thinking I may reread the rest of the series this year. #WinterGames2021 #TeamGameSleighers @StayCurious

It could have been a sweet read about the charms of bygone days, a la Little House on the Prairie or Little Women, but I found the stories mediocre. We did audiobook and the recorded quality was poor, with a narrator I had to play sped up, so that could have been part of the problem. The most interesting were the descriptions of traditions. As a parent, I was annoyed that Henny always seemed to get away with being a brat.

I would have loved this story as a kid, when I devoured stories of olden times, families, and scrimping and scraping to get by. Even now, this story of five Jewish sisters and their parents in 1912 New York City holds up better than many other similar narratives. The girls‘ adoration of their “library lady” doesn‘t hurt either 😊

I really enjoyed this book. It‘s a little quaint, but I read the first chapter to the kiddo and she‘s looking forward to reading the rest. I like that the family is Jewish and we get a look at their holidays and observances, because that‘s a perspective we don‘t read much. I‘m happy to have discovered this, and especially that the library had it!

Just started this. I never read these as a kid, and I‘m sort of previewing them for the kiddo. I have seen them used in homeschool curricula, but the religious ones not the secular (there‘s a set of curricula that have Christian/secular options, and this book is one of the differences), so I thought I‘d@give it a try. So far I love it!

Yesterday‘s $1 find! There‘s a farmer‘s market by me hosted in a church parking lot and inside they also host a used book sale with all $ earned donated to a local food pantry. It‘s always open during market hours, so I usually can‘t resist poking around when I go (♻️ & for a good cause!) — I was about to leave when I found this gem. The dust jacket is oddly large, so the top edge is crinkled, but the inside is like new even at 60+ years old!

smilingshelves Nice find! I haven't read this series, although I own several of them. When I do my second round of the Classics Club, children's edition, this series will be high on my list! 6y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves of course now I‘m balancing out the bargain by looking on eBay for the rest of the series! 🙊 I wasn‘t going to do another Classics Club list, but now my old one has been “expired” a few months, I‘m reconsidering! I‘d definitely do children‘s classics too — that‘s what my last list evolved into, but maybe I could do that right from the start this time! 📚 6y

I‘m so glad I chose to read this one for #booked2018 #childhoodfavorite. I loved this as a child and I‘m happy to say the magic is still there as an adult! #funphotofriday This was one of my most loved when I was a kid. The story of a Jewish family with 5 daughters growing up in the Lower East Side in the early 1900's.

ValerieAndBooks I never owned this but checked it out of the library many, many times! 8y
Reviewsbylola I am so glad you posted this! I loved this series! 8y

I ❤️ this entire series and pull it out all the time for a "comfort read". Am I the only nerd that reads childhood faves?

rubyslippersreads Oops, I think my comment posted before I was ready, and I can't seem to delete it! 😦 I'm a rereader of childhood books too, and this series is one of my favorites. 8y
julieloverofbooks @rubyslippersreads -that's awesome! I reread The Little House books and Lillian Gardner's Sal Fisher books are another of my faves. I like the whole "simpler time" thing I think ? 8y

If you're looking for things for an elementary aged reader this summer, add this series to your list. Timeless, engrossing stories about a big, loving, Jewish family in 1900s NY. I still remember picking which of the sisters I wanted to be, and wishing I could buy penny candy like they did.
