#BookReport/WeeklyForecast. Mostly stayed caught up on my 5 buddy reads and managed to finish 2 books. Hopefully, this week will be better.

I was afraid Dopesick would be too much like Empire of Pain but it is not. It added another layer exploring the lives of the addicted, their families, dealers, communities, etc. Both are excellent.

The author claims that opioid abuse is the primary cause of death for people under 50; which is probably true. I feel badly for the babies born addicted who have to suffer withdrawal. Good read.

🙋🏻‍♀️ Do other people who use Libby through their library for audiobooks get access to accompanying PDFs? I can‘t figure out where the PDF might be located in the app, and this particular book says the PDF includes a map and photos.

Also I love the chapter titles! So far Chapter 1 is “The United States of Amnesia” quoting Gore Vidal, and Chapter 2 is “Swag and Dash”

When your library holds come in all at once…way too many books! I had wanted to read Macy‘s more recent follow up to Dopesick, Raising Lazarus, but I thought it would mean more if I read her first book. Started reading Dopesick this afternoon. Macy‘s approach is to research & interview families in Appalachia, suburbs & city of W. vA & VA whose lives have been changed irrevocably by the opioid crisis.#libraryholds #opioidcrisis.

Fantastic and such an important book.

🥺 heartbreaking but glad I listened to the audiobook. It makes me livid at the FDA and disgusted with Purdue Pharma. Luckily those suckers are going into bankruptcy. It‘s eye opening to major issues not just with prescription abuse but turning a blind eye to addiction. So good! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

So detailed and avoided victim blaming the people who were addicted to oxy. I loved how she told the whole story of the people who died, and didn‘t sum up their existence to addiction. I also listened to the audiobook version of this and…I literally listened to all 13 hours in two days.

Starting this one today! Anyone read it? Thoughts?

A friend loaned me this book in 2019! I started it, but it was too hard to read (personal issues, nothing about the writing). After binge-watching the series, I picked it up again to finish & can now return the book. She won‘t watch the series because she‘s afraid it will ruin her appreciation for the book.

Good thing Sarah is posting later than normal today so I can get my #BookSpinBingo list posted! 😂 Looking forward to another year of this challenge.

I read this as Macy attempting to write an objective piece about the history of the opioid epidemic in rural America, but not able to help getting emotionally attached to the families she was writing about. Which makes this story even more heartbreaking. Sad and frightening and infuriating.

If you are curious as to where and why we have an opioid epidemic this is the book for you. The author spent years following people and gives a clear timeline of when it started and where we stand today. This will definitely be added to my home library.

Wow! A great #audiobook listen. I have had this on my TBR for ages. My hometown is mentioned in some sections. A great, well researched and complete look@at the opioid crisis in the US. Highly recommended.

4 stars for the writing and 5 stars for the importance of the topic. I‘ve read other books that have touched on the crisis like Winners Take All (highly recommend) but this book really spans the crisis from rural America to the Purdue boardroom and Sackler family.

I learnt so much reading this. It was pretty frightening, maddening and really sad. Really well written too

My current non-fiction read, it‘s eye-opening and alarming! I feel like the situation in Australia would be different but maybe imbroglio completely naive about that.

This is an absolute “must read”. Stunning history of how the opioid crisis began (lies, misrepresentations and greed) and what family members go through to try to save a precious soul. So many deaths as a result of negligible attempts by the govt. to deal with this crisis and the ferocious pursuit of $$$ by drug companies. I would suggest reading a paper copy because the narrator is so-so and I believe there are photos of individuals.

I‘m not very far into this book and I‘m already mad as a hornet. Two things stand out right now: 1) My boss spoke vehemently against NAFTA in 1991 in the House of Representatives against intense opposition and ridicule. He knew what NAFTA would mean to American workers. Macy now identifies NAFTA as a link to this crisis. 2) Rudy Giuliani was Purdue‘s lawyer. Does that man just wander from one awful client to another?

This was a really interesting look at the opiod crisis in the US. It came from an author from Virginia, not far from me, so that was pretty cool. It was a lot of information but it was easy to read.

Wow America you can be scary. The author is a reporter and citizen of Central Appalachia looks at the Opioid epidemic starting with the marketing of OxyContin as an addiction free pain killer leading and subsequent addiction of a significant portion of middle America, followed by waves of alternative pharmaceuticals and illegal heroin usage and the impact on one region, from users, to survivors to suppliers. A terrifying read.

Damn!!! I own this book on my Kindle and had no idea 🤪I wasn‘t a fan of the audio narration although the content was absolutely encompassing and really informative. What a terrible system we have in place. This was a difficult read but I learned a great deal. We need to start treating opioid addiction as a chronic disease and not as a drug addiction. #NonFictionChallenge2020

Infuriating 😡 Big pharm....greedy greedy greedy 🤯I wish the author was NOT the narrator ( her voice is grating and I‘m only on chapter 3)

I'm not really sure how to rate this book. I feel like Macy did an okay job of explaining the opioid epidemic, but I also felt like she was needlessly repetitive at times. I feel like she skipped around a lot as far as recounting things in a chronological order that caused some confusion for me. However, I feel like the info needs to be more widely known. I had no idea so many people are against medication assisted therapies for treatment.

One of the best books I have read this year. As a medical social worker, this book helped remind me of some things that I needed to remember and will definitely help my practice for the better.

If you are having trouble understanding the national emergency brought on by the pharmaceutical companies, doctors, and everyone else who profited from addiction and death, this book gives an upclose and personal glance at those who blew the whistle, those who struggled, and the many that perished in targeted epicenters in Virginia and West Virgina. Highly recommend following up or beginning with the predecessor Painkiller.

Finished this today while out #audiowalking. This book has good information and a lot of personal stories about addiction. Most families have been affected in some way by opioid use. I work with many families affected, & while the book doesn‘t give a lot of answers, it still helps me continue to have empathy. I also feel it helped me gain more understanding of how strong people have to be to get off heroin.

I know a lot of people have read this, & it‘s been on my tbr for awhile. Had a hard time finding an audiobook that was available the other day, then tried this one. Since I work frequently w/ substance abusers & their families, this is something I need to continue learning about. In KY, substance abuse has become worse in urban areas due to being near interstate, so where I work & live is higher than eastern ky in heroin overdoses.

I hope the doctors and drug companies #neverforget how they ruined so many lives, mainly by releasing so much unfettered OxyContin onto the market. If you‘re interested in the opiate/heroin/opioid crisis in America, these four books are an excellent place to start! #redroseseptember
