The Book of Life
The Book of Life | Deborah Harkness
"After traveling through time in Shadow of Night, the second book in Deborah Harkness's enchanting series, historian and witch Diana Bishop and vampire scientist Matthew Clairmont return to the present to face new crises and old enemies. At Matthew's ancestral home at Sept-Tours, they reunite with the cast of characters from A Discovery of Witches--with one significant exception. But the real threat to their future has yet to be revealed, and when it is, the search for Ashmole 782 and its missing pages takes on even more urgency. In the trilogy's final volume, Harkness deepens her themes of power and passion, family and caring, past deeds and their present consequences. In ancestral homes and university laboratories, using ancient knowledge and modern science, from the hills of the Auvergne to the palaces of Venice and beyond, the couple at last learn what the witches discovered so many centuries ago"--

The Conclusion.

The cast reunites and the search for the Book of Life comes to an end. I really enjoyed the characters and world of All Souls. I absolutely love the author‘s attention to detail. Even when the story is moving slow the writing is rich and kept me glued to the pages. Glad I finally read this trilogy.

Pretty engaging on audible.
The protagonist makes me crazy with her poor me-ness which I get is character development but still. Irritating. Something I didn‘t notice when I read the book prior. Still a pick though

Beautiful end to this trilogy. Thrilling and intriguing. I'm not usually a fan of series, they usually feel too slow and I can't commit that much time to them. I listened to this one after being recommended to by a friend and I'm so glad I did. Another beautiful reading by Jennifer Ikeda.

Finally got to finish book three, I enjoyed this series, love Diana and Matthew and all the characters, what I like about this series even though it has vampires, witches and demons it has cultural diversity, a historical aspect and a good love story !

DieAReader Great job!🥳🥳🥳 Glad you enjoyed it! This is the last book (I also thought it was trilogy) that I was just recently made aware of. 13mo
Areader2 @DieAReader Times Convert is basically about the making of the vampires and Marcus and Phoebe story, so not sure if I will read it , it‘s not really a continuation of the story, I feel like she will continue the story with Diana and Matthew that I would read🤷🏼‍♀️ 13mo
DieAReader @Areader2 Good to know, ty! If that‘s all it is then I‘ll skip it. Took me way too long to read this series and imo only the last one was worth the read. 13mo

This (book 3) was by far the best of them all. It took me just under 2 months to read whereas books 1 & 2 took me 6 months a piece to read them. Lots of reading sprints helped me to get motivated to finish this one!😝

Curious about book 4 ‘Time‘s Convert‘ but, I will definitely not waste, imo, more money on this series; I‘ll borrow it from the library instead.

EclecticBookLover I recently read the first book and there were aspects I really enjoyed, but overall my feeling for the book was just, meh. I way the romance was written really turned me off. It's so annoying. 14mo

So🙄…made no🚫progress on ‘Portrait of a Killer..” or “Chicken Soup…”; minor pages in “The Executioner” but killed it on “The Book of Life” thanks to some amazing sprints, awesome friends and lots of power-house reading. Opening this one back up after a brief hiatus (as I‘m reading via the Trilogy Edition, the page count is ridiculous & daunting) and hoping it doesn‘t follow suit with it‘s predecessors. They both individually each took me 6️⃣months to read. Their only reason for surviving the DNF guillotiner was the fact that I paid for it🤣🤷🏻‍♀️

This is the 3rd of the All Souls Trilogy which honestly I struggled to complete. The whole thing is boggy. Descriptions can run on and on. The vampires aren't very scary and the main character is way overpowered. And the entire premise of the story conflict - keeping creatures secret from humans - gets blown up in an unbelievable way where all the humans are totally fine with all the creatures in their midst.

jessjess The book before this one, Shadow of Night, was my #bookspin for April. 2y

Bk2 of January 2022 & #JumpStart2022 is done. I was having trouble settling on a next read so decided to reread the last in the All Souls trilogy in prep for the new season of the TV series on Saturday. I love this cover so much, these editions are gorgeous with a main location on the spine & front of each book(Oxford,Elizabethan London & Venice I believe)While it was a bit disjointed, I still enjoyed the wrap up of the story arc. #BookspinBingo👇

I finally finished. It felt like it took forever to read this. The beginning seemed like it dragged and dragged, but the action toward the last part of the book sped things up. While I liked it, I didn‘t love it. Gallowglass was probably my favorite character. I also really ended up liking Ysabeau. Recommended if you liked the first two books in the series.

This time I remembered to turn on my #audiobook. Another hour down on the tagged book. It‘s okay, but it‘s a little slower paced than I‘d prefer.

Still reading for the #NovelNovember #readathon. I forgot to track my hours for most of the week, but I‘d guess I‘m only around 10-12 hours anyway, since it‘s been a slow reading week. It doesn‘t look like I‘ll meet my readathon goals, but that won‘t stop me from giving it a go! :)

The number of times Matthew runs his hands through his hair in this book is becoming increasingly annoying.

ravenlee When I read Cinder I was distracted by Kai constantly flipping his bangs. Why do authors fixate on something like this? 2y
megnews @ravenlee and why doesn‘t a good editor notice? 2y
BarbaraJean Ugh, these kinds of things are such a pet peeve. @ravenlee @megnews My questions exactly!! When I read the Wheel of Time series, I was so annoyed at one character repeatedly tugging her braid. And don‘t get me started on the number of times a female character was described as crossing her arms “underneath her breasts.” 🙄 2y
See All 10 Comments
BarbaraBB You made me laugh out loud in a situation where I wasn‘t really allowed to at work 🤪 2y
alisiakae @ravenlee @megnews @BarbaraJean Glad I‘m not the only one bothered by things like this! I also wonder how editors don‘t pick up on this. Although this whole book needs major editing. 185 pages in and NOTHING is happening. And character development has been missing too. Only finishing this because it is the last one in the trilogy. 2y
ravenlee I think editors/editorial staff don‘t read books like reader-consumers do, and they don‘t have quite the same experience. Without sitting down and reading a book straight through, maybe these repetitions don‘t stick out so much, especially if the editor has read several versions. I bet that, after all the rewrites, some editors don‘t read the entire finished book again. Hopefully most do, but I‘m skeptical. 2y
julesG @ravenlee I agree. I often think the editor read and worked on the first two chapters, two chapters in the middle and, sometimes, two at the end. 2y
julesG Book 3 is awful. So many things do not happen. It was disappointing. A friend, who read the German translation, asked me whether I could give her a recap of book 3,so she could splurge on a different book. 😈 2y
BethM If you‘re not enjoying this one definitely skip Time‘s Convert. 2y
The_Penniless_Author @BarbaraJean Was wondering if someone would bring up Wheel of Time. The braid tugging is definitely my biggest pet peeve, although "skirt smoothing" isn't far behind ? 2y

It was easy to get lost in the world within these pages. I loved the plot, and I loved all the bookish things. I found the story intriguing. My favorite characters weren't actually the leads which is interesting. It was also a story about racism. (Not sure that is the right word, but species purity was a major plot point.) I loved the world building with the witches magic. I wish there had been more about the daemons. It was a great adventure.

Well by far these best of the series... I guess it was worth reading on after the first book! I hate to say it but the time apart the main characters had really enhanced the book and the series. It spent more time focusing on Diana‘s magic and the histories that the other books always kinda hinted at that. With that said has anyone read the two books after this one? I always like to finish a series but this reviews seem a bit meh... Thoughts?

Vansa Definitely finish the series! I absolutely loved Time's Convert, I think Deborah Harkness has a great talent in weaving in historical events with paranormal romance. 3y

My re-read of the trilogy has ended. Now I'm just waiting for my hold to come in on the 4th book.

This one wraps things up nicely, and although I think the action is a bit rushed, I still enjoyed it as much as the first time I read it. Secrets are revealed, some characters are lost, new friends are made, and the magic takes center stage instead of the romance for once. 😉
