Bag of Bones (Classic)
Bag of Bones (Classic) | Stephen King
142 posts | 268 read | 6 reading | 97 to read
Set in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine From iconic storyteller Stephen King, the twentieth anniversary edition of Bag of Bones, the #1 New York Times bestselling tale of grief, love's enduring bonds, and the haunting secrets of the past. Set in the Maine territory King has made mythic, Bag of Bones recounts the plight of forty-year-old bestselling novelist Mike Noonan, who is unable to stop grieving following the sudden death of his wife Jo, and who can no longer bear to face the blank screen of his computer. Now his nights are plagued by vivid nightmares, all set at the Maine summerhouse he calls Sara Laughs. Despite these dreams, or perhaps because of them, Mike returns to the lakeside getaway. There he finds his beloved Yankee town held in the grip of a powerful millionaire, Max Devore, who will do anything to take his three-year-old granddaughter away from her widowed young mother. As Mike is drawn into their struggle, as he falls in love with both mother and child, he is also drawn into the mystery of Sara Laughs, now the site of ghostly visitations, ever-escalating nightmares, and the sudden recovery of his writing ability. What are the forces that have been unleashed here--and what do they want of Mike Noonan? First published in 1998, Bag of Bones was an instant #1 New York Times bestseller. It was lauded at its publication as "hands down, Stephen King's most narratively subversive fiction" (Entertainment Weekly) and his "most ambitious novel" (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution). This anniversary edition serves as a keepsake volume for years to come.

Still one of my favorite underrated King books. It‘s got spooky ghosts, romance, divorce court, and a wacky ending that feels both hopelessly optimistic and bittersweet at the same time. If you haven‘t read this book, give it a go (especially if you prefer lighter horror).

Not so sure about this one. I was hooked sometimes, but then at times I felt it was too long winded. Kind of normal for King, though. And a huge trigger warning here which I wish I would have known: rape and child murders. I had to skip over some of the ending because I can‘t handle reading about that ⚠️

This is an incredible read, that is by turns beautiful, terrifying, and heartbreaking. The mystery at its heart is not one that reveals itself until the bitter end, and the journey to its ultimate conclusion is immensely riveting. Not only is the primary protagonist engaging and relatable (with some notable exceptions), this book's mostly female cast of secondary protagonists are an absolute delight, and are worth the price of admission alone. 5/5

One of my favorite SK books. I read it when it first came out and there was a definite shift in his writing. It was like he finally became comfortable writing his adult self and fears into his stories.

One of King‘s most underrated books. What starts as an intriguing legal thriller quickly unravels and turns into a rumination about trauma, revenge, and racial violence. Mike is a great protagonist, too. I‘m really happy I revisited this book.

A re-read however, I remember this book being stronger. The first 2/3 are brilliant. The final 1/3 is comparably weaker. Mot my favourite King, but still solid enough.

Still getting through it, but this dude was hungry for some “barely legal“ business when he wrote this one....christ....

JanuarieTimewalker13 Can you explain? I read this a while back...maybe a year and half ago, I remember the house, and I liked the book, but what do you mean? 4y
llcoolnate @JanuarieTimewalker13 lol undertones when he meets her, leading to thoughts, then a graphic sex dream, then eventual outward sexual conversations (disregarding how silly and unrealisticallyit was presented lol)-- and that's all I've read so far. Decent chunk left, so I'm sure there's more too be had. 4y
llcoolnate @JanuarieTimewalker13 horror is one of my favorite, if not my favorite genres. And yet how annoyed cheap sex scenes, goofy horny writing, and teenage-boy fantasy writing gets me makes me like..not the ideal candidate for horror. Hahaha. Just makes a book all that much better when the author isn't super horny and/or pandering lolil 4y
See All 13 Comments
JanuarieTimewalker13 Oh geez, I don‘t remember any of this. Was it his wife you‘re talking about? Didn‘t she die suddenly. Something about coming out of a drug store? 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Oh wait!! There was a younger woman with a child, is that who you‘re taking about? 4y
llcoolnate @JanuarieTimewalker13 yeah the young mother who he speaks in long sentences about her nipples and how she'd be in bed and how young she is and how shes only had slept with 1 other person but she wants him and on and on and on lolol. I like some King stuff, but some is weak and seems to be propped by the name. I still haven't read The Stand or Salems lot so I'm really hopeful there. 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 You know what, there are men like that, it‘s creepy, I know. When I was younger and an older man would check me out, It made me pissed off. I haven‘t read The Stand yet. I read ‘Salem‘s Lot and I loved it. I still think my faves (thus far) are 11/22/63 and The Institute. (edited) 4y
llcoolnate @JanuarieTimewalker13 I need to check out the Institute. I really liked Misery and The Shining, so I'm not writing him off. And there are definitely men like that out there....but in this story it's supposed to be endearing..and it's odd, and creepy. I just get picky and when someone writes from the perspective of a writer with writer's block I find it lazy. When I think they're writing their own fantasies..weird. 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 If you are going to read The Regulators and Desperation (companion novels/duology(sort of)), read Rose Madder first. Someone said that on Reddit. A character named Cynthia has her back story in RM. I didn‘t know that and I‘m almost done with D. Cynthia is a great character. 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 I liked The Shining. I own Doctor Sleep but haven‘t read it yet. I prefer his paranormal and psychic stuff. That‘s why I loved The Institute. I‘m guessing Doctor Sleep has a lot of it bc it‘s the follow up on Danny. 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 I think King wants to make you uncomfortable. I think he wants you to know this is what‘s going on in some people‘s‘ minds. He has taught me so much. I wish I had read him as a teenager 4y
llcoolnate @JanuarieTimewalker13 I'll grab Rose Madder then!! Thanks! 4y

Bigcountry15 This is in my top 5 Stephen King books (that I've read). 4y

llcoolnate @DAB lol thank you 4y
llcoolnate @wanderinglynn yeah I want to like them more than I do. The last several have been...rough. 4y
llcoolnate @Bigcountry15 oh good I need a redemption King book. Under the Dome, From a Buick 8, and the like were killin me hahaha 4y
bthegood @llcoolnate his short story The Reach is good, not a horror story, although I like his horror, it is a story that stayed with me. 4y
llcoolnate @Reggie yeah I'm 100% against the concept of an author writing from the perspective of an author with writer's block and forming a story based on life in his actual home town...and all that. Idk. As a multi-millionaire, best-selling, "king of horror", that concept seems really lazy at the very least. But who knows! Pluggin along with an open mind. 4y
llcoolnate @bthegood I'll need to check it out! 4y
wanderinglynn I read some of his non-horror books: The Body (the book the movie Stand By Me was based on) & The Gunslinger when I was much younger and liked them. And more recently I‘ve read Blockade Billy (novella about baseball) and On Writing. He has a few more not horror, like The Green Mile, but I haven‘t read those. 4y
llcoolnate @wanderinglynn yeah I heard the green mile was good! I liked On Writing, but haven't read much of the others 4y

#hauntedhallowswap Pictured are some of my favorite horror books. In general, I‘m a big time Stephen King fan. I love witches, black cats, and pastel goth. Other books I enjoyed that are not pictured include Fledgling by Octavia Butler and Hannibal by Thomas Harris. Somehow along the way I also ended up being really into zombie stories... The Girl With All The Gifts is another fave, but I still haven‘t read the sequel.

Had this book on my shelf for awhile. Read close to 100 pages then put it down now picking it back up.. I love Kings plots but wish he wouldn't drag it out.. I always get frustrated with him and yell let's just get on with it already. I can't handle useless rambling but I'm also interested in the plot. Slowly but surely I can get thru it even if I read a few books in between

I finished this one out of stubbornness, rolling my eyes at the widowed, 40-ish author falling in love with the 22-yo, flawless single mother (even if the character is embarrassed at himself). The writing is self-conscious, like King can‘t get out of his own head. The narrator quotes Chandler—when you‘re stuck on a story have a man come through a door with a gun in his hand—after the damsel in distress dies in the narrator‘s arms. #30booksin30days

Mixed feelings about this book—it's not well written. It's messy with a bunch of loose ends King tries to tie up with a ridiculous Scooby-Doo style scene at the very end. I think King's editor probably just waved their red pen over the stack of pages and moved it along. Trigger warning for pretty much everything. It contains one of the most brutal and graphic rape scenes I've ever read. And yet I could NOT put it down.
