What a scoundrel wants, a scoundrel gets. . . A decade ago, the Marquess of Bourne was cast from society with nothing but his title. Now a partner in London's most exclusive gaming hell, the cold, ruthless Bourne will do whatever it takes to regain his inheritanceincluding marrying perfect, proper Lady Penelope Marbury.A broken engagement and years of disappointing courtships have left Penelope with little interest in a quiet, comfortable marriage, and a longing for something more. How lucky that her new husband has access to an unexplored world of pleasures.Bourne may be a prince of London's illicit underworld, but he vows to keep Penelope untouched by its wickednessa challenge indeed as the lady discovers her own desires, and her willingness to wager anything for them . . . .even her heart.

I was today years old when I learned that Sarah MacLean‘s fan-cast/inspiration for Borne was Michael Fassbender. 😍 I must now reread this entire season with that image in my head. 😍

Laughterhp Ooo I did not know that! I may need to reread as well! 3y

I‘ve had this book on my shelf for over three years. I remember I bought it because of the high praise I had seen on litsy, but I can‘t remember where exactly.

Well, I finally picked it up and this was exactly what I needed right now. Steamy romance with a feisty heroine who stands up for herself. It was fun, kept me entertained and gave me the happy ending I wanted with a nod to what‘s to come in book 2. I‘ll definitely continue the series. ❤️

annahenke Love Sarah‘s books! 4y

Another winning book by Sarah MacLean. Admittedly, I‘m not the biggest fan of the narrator, but I was still quite engaged in the story. In a world of women with sharp minds, and rogues with dark pasts, you know there will be scandal and “ruination.” On to book two of the series!

Andrew65 Should be called Rouge! 5y
Librarybelle @Andrew65 😂 That would be a fitting title! 5y
ferskner I love her as a narrator but not for romances. She makes everything too melodramatic, and as someone who is already borderline on romances, it's too much. 5y
Librarybelle @ferskner That‘s a good description, and I think that‘s why I‘m not crazy about the narration. 5y

I LOVE making people try romance novels. They always look at me like I‘m nuts when I say how great they are, but they‘re converted once they try them! These are the texts I just got from my work mentee (this definitely isn‘t in the mentor guidelines but she‘s cool 😆)

#24in48 #hour18 #romancechallenge I read a handful of historical romances in high school and then took a 20+ year break from the genre. I rediscovered romance novels a couple years ago, starting with Penny Reid. I love her “smart romances”. I then went looking for a new historical romance author and discovered Sarah MacLean. I‘ve been hooked ever since. This is some of my print and ebook collection. 😍

While I tend not to like “woman redeems man” stories, I do love “kick his ass, baby, I‘ll hold your flower” stories, and this book makes you think it‘s in the first category and then BAM it‘s in the second, and it is glorious. #glorytotheguild

I‘m so in love with this book! The heroine is strong, takes charge of her destiny, saves not one, but two heroes in distress - (vanquishing a terrible man at his own game), and gets her man. What‘s not to love? Bonus Round 1: Hysterical Star Wars reference at the end! Bonus Round 2: The Epilogue - “bwah ha ha”s implied!

Side Note: Gus earns the Best Doggo Trick of the Year Award, aka “assume the book/eReader stand position!” 😂 #PetsOfLitsy #FTW

Once again, Sarah MacLean does not disappoint. Whenever I'm in the mood for something light, fun, and feel good, I know I can turn to one of her books. And she gets bonus points for writing strong women who stand up to men much more than was "appropriate" at the time the books are set.

DGRachel This was my first Sarah MacLean and I loved it! 7y

My plan for today was to get up early to do yard work because the weeds are taking over. Then clean the house in preparation for company next week. All of this while audiobooking. Reality: I started this Sarah MacLean book on my kindle & haven't started any of my other tasks. I'm giving myself 30 more minutes and then I must get to work!!

Romance is not a genre that I read, but this wasn't too bad. I had some issues with the way the relationship got started, but I liked the characters and the rest of the story. The main character of the next book in the series intrigues me, so I will be reading it at some point.

(Disclosure: I pictured Hugh Jackman as the male protagonist during most of this so my review may be bias.) I found this a little more troupe-y than my first MacLean read. There is a "bad boy" gambler and a "prim and proper" lady who fall for him. He's a jerk and she wears him down. It's a compulsive read and I still enjoyed it. I still laughed out loud a few times. And I think I'm going to love the tie in to the other characters. Overall 3.5⭐️

prowlix I am glad I started with the last book in this series because there was a lot more feminism. Penelope ends up being a strong woman but she didn't start the novel there. I'll still read of this series though! 7y

Litten family, I need some kindness. I interacted with an author on social media in a friendly way. She is a pretty famous writer, and I'm a nobody high school teacher trying to sell my first book.

Well, she quote-tweeted me back with a mean smack down that also fished for compliments--which her followers gave in heaping measures, tagging me.

I feel sad and small in the bookish world, which usually feels like home. 😩

I've been sick for four weeks now, on top of a major house renovation that left us living in a construction zone and confined to the upstairs. I've been so hard hit both physically and mentally that I've barely been able to read! The American took me to Michigan and forced me to rest for four days straight, which is what I needed.
