Another good Stephen King read. Luke is kidnapped and taken to a place where kids with telepathy and telekinesis are molded to “save the world”. Luke and Tim in this read are great characters. Poor Avery! Love Kings books that are scary true!!😳😬

I haven‘t read any Stephen King since the BIG disappointment of Doctor Sleep. At this point it seems like he keeps writing the same books over and over with a few changes to the minor details and character names. File under “More of the Same.”

My 2 copies of this book. The UK edition was from a swap but I forgot or lost the note where I use to write the swap and who sent it to me.

I enjoyed this book and as always, love the way Mr. King describes the characters. An interesting sci fi novel. However, I think it was unnecessarily too long but who will tell that to this author?☺️So hard for Luke. I like the relationship between these characters. Some little gory scenes as expected😆3.8⭐️

Liked it, it‘s got an X-Men / Stranger Things vibe with the Institute kids. And a protagonist you could really cheer for. But it seems overly long in some parts, & the resolution was middling. #losersclub

I never know where a novel by Stephen King is going to take me and that‘s what I love about his story telling talent. In the Institute, King introduced fascinating concepts that made my skin prickle. He developed theories I hope stay in the realm of fiction. The story is suspenseful; the last 100 pages were intense! I couldn‘t stop reading until I finished the book.

IndoorDame I have to read this one again! I read it really young and creepy hazy memories of it always stuck with me. Seeing several reviews of it online Litsy this year I realized it was a King novel I was remembering. I‘d always assumed I was remembering some 90s YA thing. 11mo

Well, while I was feeling cruddy today due to the side effects of a flu shot (always hits me hard), I did get some reading done.

This book sucked me in immediately. I haven't picked up a King book in a while, and I think I nearly forgot how much I enjoy his writing style. The characters were the driving force in this one, for sure, but his easy flowing prose also just made the chapters fly by. Definitely glad I picked it up!

KathyWheeler My dad, who wasn‘t a Stephen King reader, recommended this book to me. I am an SK reader, so he was surprised I hadn‘t read it. I really liked it. 14mo

Fans of Firestarter or Stranger Things will enjoy this story of a secret facility and the abducted children held captive there, chosen for their psychic abilities. When they kidnap 12-year-old Luke Ellis, they make the mistake of discounting his true gift, a brilliant mind. The actions of the sadistic staff were hard to stomach at times, and King's teenagers all talk like someone's Grandpa, but it was still an engrossing and tense read.

This is my first Stephen King book. I chose it because it had amazing reviews (like all of his books), seemed to be on the shorter end and had an audio book accompanying it. I have always been intimidated by picking up Stephen King books because they are so long and seem to have so much depth. I have been afraid I would get lost and not love his books like I want to.
This reminded me a lot of Stranger Things. Definitely worth the read!

3✨ Luke Ellis is a genius. One night he is stolen from his parents and taken to the institute. He discovers that all the kids here have special abilities that the staff forcefully brings out of them. They are rewarded for cooperation and the staff is not kind of they don‘t. Luke and his friends work to try to escape to get help. This book was really good.⬇️

Roary47 How they were taken and how they fought back was pretty intense. It was also unnerving that adults pretty much everywhere we‘re doing this type of child trafficking. 2y

Read this over the xmas/NY break. A top secret group kidnapping children with extra sensory abilities, a genius kid, interweaving storyline‘s converging to a showdown, small town USA. King doing his thing well yet again. The most recent book of his I‘ve read, weird seeing him writing about catching Ubers but he has kept up and stays relevant. Very enjoyable.

I was confident that I was going to enjoy this but those first two-thirds blew me away! Fantastic storytelling, which had me picking it up any time I had a spare five minutes (and even sometimes when I didn't).

Sadly the last stretch didn't grip me quite as much, so I lost a little momentum there.

As usual a great book from Mr. King, although there were some disturbing aspects to this one, it‘s sad that while this is fiction I could see it absolutely taking place. But a great page turner and lovable heroes. As for the kids language, I get it and those who don‘t weren‘t the weird kids in an element where you were the outsider. I loved the language they used and thought it was appropriate.

I liked the story here - truly horrifying as King is so good at. Some of it is well written…he‘s great at capturing minutiae and making it interesting. However, the unrealistic, old fashioned, and downright corny at times dialogue by modern teenagers was just too hard to get past. Ultimately, the characters didn‘t feel real and I couldn‘t get very invested in them.

quote
Bookgirl

I‘m mostly enjoying this but the dialogue is driving me nuts. I have teenagers. I‘m around many of them much of the time. They don‘t say: “Jeepers!” “Put an egg in your shoe and beat it.” “Since Hector was a pup.” Actually, I know no one of any age who talks like this. Also, nobody beyond Gen X would have any idea who Kreskin is. He needs a younger editor. The old fashioned language is distracting me from an interesting story.

An engaging story about youngsters fighting against the injustice of adults who are intent on exploiting them. The kids use their supernatural psychic powers in their battle. I enjoyed this, but I feel like King did not achieve his usual magic in the portrayal of the young protagonists. I just didn‘t feel that charmed submersion into the magic of childhood that he created so well in books like IT. It‘s still a great read!

Pretty good audiobook but not my favorite of King‘s writing. He is a masterful storyteller but this story has me question a few of his idea choices. Trigger warnings of child abuse and kidnapping. I think the main character should have been older in the story for as wise as he was. The narrator was pretty good but I had a few issues with the voice choices for done if the characters. Overall it‘s a good King read if you are a fan.

I listened to The Institute. Stephen King is an excellent storyteller with very unique ideas. His writing, especially as it pertains to women, feels pompous and arrogant and is sexist. Luckily, The Institute's characters are mostly children--children in a facility because of their supernatural powers. The book is really engaging. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
