Horrid | Katrina Leno
From the author of You Must Not Miss comes a haunting contemporary horror novel that explores themes of mental illness, rage, and grief, twisted with spine-chilling elements of Stephen King and Agatha Christie. Following her father's death, Jane North-Robinson and her mom move from sunny California to the dreary, dilapidated old house in Maine where her mother grew up. All they want is a fresh start, but behind North Manor's doors lurks a history that leaves them feeling more alone...and more tormented. As the cold New England autumn arrives, and Jane settles in to her new home, she finds solace in old books and memories of her dad. She steadily begins making new friends, but also faces bullying from the resident "bad seed," struggling to tamp down her own worst nature in response. Jane's mom also seems to be spiraling with the return of her childhood home, but she won't reveal why. Then Jane discovers that the "storage room" her mom has kept locked isn't for storage at all--it's a little girl's bedroom, left untouched for years and not quite as empty of inhabitants as it appears.... Is it grief? Mental illness? Or something more...horrid?

This was actually better than I was expecting (not that I didn‘t think I‘d like it but I just didn‘t have particularly high expectations). It was creepy and unsettling and the ending was TWISTED! I will say that it was somewhat repetitive and the fact that the big secret was known by everyone in the town but our main character was pretty far fetched. But still a decent scary story! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Read in 2nd week of October
It has mixed reviews but I liked it not loved it. After Jane‘s father died she moved with her mother to the North‘s Manor, a house Ruth, inherited. Jane started to hear noises but her mother said is because is an old house, abandoned for 2 years. But then she started to see things. Something happened in Halloween in that house. So many secrets behind those locked doors. The end is so creepy. 3/3.4⭐️

I couldn‘t put it down, but the ending left me completely unsatisfied. Mental illness, ghosts, or a traumatic past coming back to haunt the entire town? It was delightfully creepy throughout. Pretty predictable plot. I‘d recommend it if you‘re looking for something fun and don‘t want to think much. #TeamMonsterMash #Scarathlon #Scarathlon2022

It took awhile to process this book. I still am not sure what to think about it. I rounded up because it does it's job with being creepy and weird. It starts off with Jane eating her books when she's upset. The author did a great job at toeing the line of is Jane having a "breakdown" or if there really is something horrid happening in that house. If I would have had time I probably would have read this one all at once because I had to know.

Mental illness or a ghost? This story never really seems to come to a conclusion of either and you are left wondering, I found the storyline quite predictable, feeling like I was one step ahead of the protagonist all the way through.

The ending was terrible, with nothing wrapped up and no questions answered.

The cover art is beautiful, the story was okay but I felt it was unfinished with a very abrupt ending!

Oooh what a good one! It reads like Turn of the Screw- as in it‘s never quite clear if it‘s a supernatural force or not. My interpretation is, yeah, ghost shenanigans. But if anyone has a differing read I‘d love to hear it.

I didn't really connect with this book. I didn't mind the beginning but it really lost me as I kept going. I didn't feel connected to the characters, there were creepy moments but it was really confusing. I felt like it was obvious what was going on, but then nothing was wrapped up. I just felt like there should have been more explanation. There were too many things left unsaid. 2/5

The cover art is the best this about this book. Horrid is actually the best word to describe it. If I hadn't listened to the audiobook, I would have bailed pretty quickly. The OVER DESCRIPTION of everything was so irritating: 'she looked at the roses that glimmered in the moonlight like..... she felt a cool breeze like a....' everything had a comparison and it got old really fast. It was a chore to get through this book.

There was so much potential in this book, but the ending was too rushed and left too many open-ended questions.

It's a fast read about a haunted house that has its creepy moments. The mom and daughter I found annoying though and never fully invested in their characters.

Overall, it was just okay, nothing special.

Hovering between a pick and so so for me. I don't relate to high school girls attending class or sneaking alcohol in flasks but otherwise a creepy haunted house story. All families have secrets, some are just known to entire towns and not individuals who show up to start a new life. Overall, a fairly decent story with a nice little twist at the end.

IamIamIam @eri.reads If you're a serious horror fan, this will fall short but it's really a horror "beach read", lol. 2y

I‘ve seen a bunch of positive reviews for this one but I wasn‘t a fan. I found Jane unlikeable and found the plot disturbing and creepy, but not scary. There were a couple WTF moments, but I was left with a lot of questions and the ending was unsatisfactory. Honestly, the most horrifying part of the book was Jane‘s book-eating obsession due to her serious anger issues.

Devoured this haunted YA thriller in two days but still processing my thoughts on the ending. Maybe the most abrupt ending I've ever read. So much so that I flipped the page expecting the next chapter to find out what happened only to see... acknowledgements. I love an open ended book as much as the next gal but this was too extreme for my taste. Still despite that and despite broadcasting most of the 'twists,' I still really enjoyed most of it.
