The Queen of Blood | Sarah Beth Durst
103 posts | 80 read | 4 reading | 188 to read
Set in the magical world of Renthia, The Queen of Blood is Sarah Beth Dursts ambitious entry into adult epic fantasy. With the danger of Peter Bretts The Warded Man, heart of Naomi Noviks Uprooted, and lyricism of Patrick Rothfuss The Name of the Wind, this is the first chapter in a series destined to be a classic. Everything has a spirit: the willow tree with leaves that kiss the pond, the stream that feeds the river, the wind that exhales fresh snow . . . But the spirits that reside within this land want to rid it of all humans. One woman stands between these malevolent spirits and the end of humankind: the queen. She alone has the magical power to prevent the spirits from destroying every man, woman, and child. But queens are still just human, and no matter how strong or good, the threat of danger always looms. With the position so precarious, young women are chosen to train as heirs. Daleina, a seemingly quiet academy student, is under no illusions as to her claim to the throne, but simply wants to right the wrongs that have befallen the land. Ven, a disgraced champion, has spent his exile secretly fighting against the growing number of spirit attacks. Joining forces, these daring partners embark on a treacherous quest to find the source of the spirits restlessnessa journey that will test their courage and trust, and force them to stand against both enemies and friends to save their land . . . before its bathed in blood.

A character driven story with strong world building. The Queen of Blood has it all, plot-wise it's very interesting seeing Daleina struggles with her studies and controlling spirits. Despite being not the best, if possible the very bottom candidate for being Queen she thrives with her creative thinking and good instinct. Very enjoyable and satifying seeing her grow throughout the book.
A must read 💓💓

Loved the opening, then it took a while to pick back up. Lots of unexpected turns. I liked that Daleina wasn‘t the strongest magic user, not the fast runner, etc. But she had grit, determination, and compassion. Good read.

I finally managed to read beyond Chapter 3! There‘s a lot to like about this book—each of the three main characters are well-developed & interesting & only occasionally do or say things that don‘t make sense & the worldbuilding is top notch. That being said, the way all the characters interacted didn‘t always work & transitions between scenes were often abrupt. The story itself was good but not enough I feel I need to continue with the series.

Schnoebs Love this book!!! Probably one of my favorite worlds and really enjoyed the second book. I‘m hoping to get to book 3 in january 5y

Third time‘s the charm?!? 🤞 Continuing with my dive into the deepest reaches of my TBR stacks, I‘m going with a book I‘ve tried to read on two previous occasions—unfortunately, it didn‘t take either time! 🤣 I‘ve seen good things about it here on Litsy so I‘m going to give it another chance! I mean I bought it so at one time it sounded really interesting to me, right?!?

I was wrapped up in this book and spent a few nights staying up late.
It has the feeling of a young adult book.
Some of the deaths are gruesome.

Not just beautiful world building, but Durst also makes it come alive. Although I‘ve seen it labeled ‘YA‘, it didn‘t read that way for me. Sure, a younger audience would love this, but so would an older one. I for sure really enjoyed it. So, thank you @Velvetfur for including it in the #MythsandLegendsSwap 🤩🤩

👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

LittleBug Although Robert Jordan isn‘t mentioned in the acknowledgments as one if the authors that inspired Durst, the academy reminded me of Tar Valon. The way the spirits are commanded reminded me of a book about dragons, that I read ages ago...Possibly the one from Anne McCaffrey that is mentioned in the acknowledgments😊 5y

Finished audiobook 1 for #bfc

This book was an interesting fantasy. There is a queen that rules Renthia and controls the spirit but she is basically corrupt. Girls with an affinity for spirits go to school to learn and try to become heirs for when the queen dies. There are champions who train the heirs with real world experience. My main complaint, there was a romance thrown in that did nothing but aggravate the story. I will continue series.

I‘ve been audio puzzling lately! It‘s probably been a year or so since I‘ve worked on puzzle and it‘s been so relaxing! It‘s all I want to do!

I‘m enjoying the tagged audiobook as well. I of course started 2 fantasy books around the same time. 1 audio 1 print. They both follow girls going to a school to learn their strengths. I‘m trying really hard not to confuse the 2 plots! So far so good! 🤞🏻🤞🏻

So I finished reading the tagged book over a week ago and I loved it so much that I still can‘t get it out of my head. But that‘s a problem because I‘m trying to read the #bbbbc pick this month. Sadly I‘m thinking I‘m going to have to put down Mistborn for a little bit because I‘m not able to concentrate on a brand new world yet, let alone a Sanderson world. So here‘s hoping the gentleman‘s guide will be a good palate cleanser!

InLibrisVeritas I understand about Mistborn. I am loving it but my focus is pretty much nil right now so I haven't progressed very far. I hope you get your reading groove back soon! 6y
Schnoebs @InLibrisVeritas it‘s funny because I‘m still in the mood to read but I feel like I might be in an epic fantasy slump 😂 because I just can‘t stop thinking about the elemental spirits and tree houses from the queen of blood 6y
phatsallylee I just read both of those books. Mistborn took awhile before it swept me in. 6y

4.5 ⭐️

The sarcastic humor by the characters, the natural world that was built, the uniqueness of every individual of the spirits with such detail, a background romance that wasn‘t forced, the greatness of a wolf companion and so much more had me turning page after page and not wanting to put it down. I can‘t wait to finished this series in the next couple of months.

Schnoebs @Jules I think I‘m using this for 27 for #sfftbrchallenge because so much death occurred in this that I‘m pretty sure one of them was family or a POV 🤷‍♀️ I guess that‘s what happens in a world of blood thirsty elemental spirits 6y

I think fantasy and I have broken up. It‘s been ages since I‘ve read a good fantasy book. I‘ve struggled with every one I‘ve read this year and The Queen of Blood was no different. It had some moments but I was waiting for a wow factor that I never got.

dawn-pInk Any strong feelings about the Kingkiller Chronicles? 6y
Kristy_K @dawn-pInk I haven‘t read that yet. Is it worth the read?? 6y
See All 8 Comments
dawn-pInk It‘s the best fantasy I‘ve read in a long time. The author, Patrick Rothfuss, seems very aware of what is problematic in fantasy and is trying to get rid a lot of that while still playing with popular fantasy tropes. Would highly, highly recommend. First book is Name of the Wind 6y
Kristy_K @Moray_Reads Right? I feel it just got oversaturated with basically the mediocre story. 6y

I‘m afraid to read the next book due to the fact the heroine was constantly cut short of believing fully in herself due to not having great powers but she made up for it in other areas. It irks me how she became a queen and not truly understanding how great she is instead of being under average. However,I did like fantasy parts. Great descriptions, which is why I gave it 3 stars.

Definitely a unique fantasy tale. The character building was really well done, and watching the main protagonist deal with her own stubbornness versus her own weaknesses was great. Having a main character who is at a disadvantage and less powerful to those in her station around her was a really interesting plot development. I liked how she wasn't the chosen one or the best of the best. Can't wait to read the next one! Loving this world!
