The Snowman
The Snowman: A Harry Hole Novel (7) | Jo Nesbo
Internationally acclaimed crime writer Jo Nesbs antihero police investigator, Harry Hole, is back: in a bone-chilling thriller that will take Hole to the brink of insanity. Oslo in November. The first snow of the season has fallen. A boy named Jonas wakes in the night to find his mother gone. Out his window, in the cold moonlight, he sees the snowman that inexplicably appeared in the yard earlier in the day. Around its neck is his mothers pink scarf. Hole suspects a link between a menacing letter hes received and the disappearance of Jonass motherand of perhaps a dozen other women, all of whom went missing on the day of a first snowfall. As his investigation deepens, something else emerges: he is becoming a pawn in an increasingly terrifying game whose rules are devisedand constantly revisedby the killer.Fiercely suspenseful, its characters brilliantly realized, its atmosphere permeated with evil, The Snowman is the electrifying work of one of the best crime writers of our time.

Nothing says happy holidays like creepy snowmen and a hunt for a Norwegian serial killer. I listened to the audio so at first I didn't realize that some chapters were flashbacks, but it all made sense eventually. The main detective is a bit of a cliche, but the mystery itself was very enjoyable. The pacing was great and the climax was very well written. #WinterGames #HolidayRead #SlayBells @MidnightBookGirl @StayCurious @Clwojick

My first in the Harry Hole series and I quite enjoyed this!! I've already got the movie lined up to watch haha!
Was it completely a surprise? No. Did I fall for every moment of "oh no, please not that/her/him" etc. 100%
On the verge of ??? at least one good time (anyone who has read this knows what I'm talking about!). Anyway, pretty sure I'll continue reading in series which is kind of impressive as I'm not one to do series.

Turned out, the plot wasn‘t as complicated as I expected but it was still good to listen to it in as few sittings as possible.

I like the inspector and all his personal stuff: addiction and family ties. The more I came to know the personnel, the less the story felt plot-driven.

Nice to now know that the series consists of books that stand for their own so that I can read without taking care if it‘s the correct order.

#BookishGoal 50.

Seems, this one will get very complicated.

• Many, many characters that here and there do have similar names. (Or is it just me who thinks that because I am unfamiliar with Scandinavian names and languages❓🤔)

• Different time levels – if I‘m not completely wrong, I identified two or three of them.

So I decided to listen to this audiobook as much as I can to not lose the thread. Seems, the „Tapirtier“ has to wait a bit.

My next “audioread”. I chose it because I wanted to read something by this author for a long time.

Yes, it‘s the 7th part of a series (🙄), so I was inclined to put it away unread. But my internet researched found this review saying no previous knowledge needed because all that happened in the other books that is of importance in here will be explained.

So, 15 hours, here we go.

I liked this book because it was gritty. The concept of a seasonal serial killer, who resumes killing once the first snow falls and stops when winter becomes spring, works really well. While the plot had slower moments (typical in the Nesbø I‘ve read), the concept kept me turning pages, eager to find the killer and discover his or her motivations. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ https://bit.ly/2X0mnIz #popsugarreadingchallenge

janeycanuck I made the terrible mistake of reading this right around when we had our first snow fall and there were snowmen popping up all over our neighbourhood 😳 11mo

This may be an #unpopularopinion, but Nesbø‘s most popular book (at least in America) is my least favorite. I figured out who the serial killer was early on, and the convoluted storyline did not work as well as it has in some of his past books.

I am also not a big fan of serial killer books, so that could have something to do with it. They all seem to follow the same trope.

Fulfills the #pop19 prompt “read during season it is set #seriesread

4thhouseontheleft @LazyDays The ⛄️ bit was definitely creepy. I go in and out with my love for mysteries! But this one felt too voyeuristic to me, it crossed the line a bit. @Martyn_J_Pass They did, with Michael Fassbender. 13mo

I‘m starting to get used to how Jo Nesbø writes his villains, and my hunch is that Mathias is the serial killer in this one. just not sure if his age and the flashback chapters match up.

Putting this behind a spoiler warning on the off chance I‘m right...I‘m only 50 pages in.

#WinterWonderland #FrostytheSnowman Funny story, I had this crush on Michael Fassbender (who doesn‘t?) and saw the trailer for The Snowman. Then I found out it was based on a book. Then I found out it was the 6th in a series. So 2 summers ago I read the series up until the 6th book and just couldn‘t take the what I feel is very in your face male chauvinism. And then, after all that reading, I didn‘t see the movie. Boooo Lol.

melbeautyandbooks The movie has almost nothing to do with the book. They changed the beginning, middle, and end. I mean from the opening minute to the final ending. They used the same characters and a few aspects of the book‘s story and that‘s about it. The movie was pretty good if you haven‘t read the book. 14mo
Bookzombie I sort of feel like you have just released me from reading this series. It‘s been on my TBR for a while, but maybe it‘s just not worth it and I can just watch the movie sometime. Great review! 14mo

Reggie @Bookzombie if you ever get curious about him read the 3rd in the series called The Redbreast. It was voted the best Norwegian crime novel EVER. Maybe they know the world ends soon. Lol. It‘s the best of the six I‘ve read and it was the one I felt best about...... 14mo
Reggie @Bookzombie I‘m not gonna tell you which one it is but one of the books has a woman kill herself to make it look like her 3 exbfs killed her because she was bitter about them breaking up with her. Like really? I had never missed Lisbeth Salander as much as I did reading that novel. She‘s from the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series if you haven‘t read those they‘re soooo good. Dark and intense but sooo good. 14mo
Bookzombie @Reggie Yes, I‘m going to skip this series. There are plenty of others to read. I loved the Lisbeth Salander trilogy. I can‘t convince myself to read the ones not written by Larsson. 14mo

Faibka Haven‘t read this one but I read The Bat, first one in the series and decent enough, and The Redbreast which I highly recommend. Great, well written serial killer thriller. This was my first Nesbo, and I liked the tough but human character of Harry Hole, and his forlorn love for Rakel. We get many false solutions and twists, lots of action, violence, gore and sex, but also good character development and relationships. I found the Sherlockian attention to tiny details really fun - not too many detectives do that any more. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Gezemice @monkeygirlsmama There was a movie last year - a pretty bad one, but it made the book popular again. 2y
monkeygirlsmama @Gezemice I didn‘t know that. Hmm, will try to keep that in mind. Stick with the book and avoid the film. Sounds like most Stephen King stuff. LoL I love his books, but have only seen one decent movie adaptation- Misery. 2y
Gezemice @monkeygirlsmama I think that is pretty common with modern thrillers. There are exceptions, of course. I have not read the Jason Bourne series but those are the best action movies I have seen. I am a bit leery of reading the books, lest they don‘t live up to the movies... 2y

This is my first Harry Hole book so no preconceived notions on what to expect. I thought this book was creepy in the description of the snowmen and murders. I read books like this a lot but this one actually gave me a nightmare. It did drag on in certain parts but otherwise great story with good characters.

Happy #socksunday! I‘m spending time with this oldie after watching the terribly disappointing adaptation. I need to wash the memory of that hot mess away with the book.

Friendly suggestion: this isn‘t a book to read home alone after dark. Too bad I can‘t put it down. Guess I‘m just not sleeping tonight?

I had to listen and read this one. I really enjoyed it - what a great storyteller. I‘m looking forward to reading more of Jo Nesbø‘s mysteries.

Harry Hole has to hunt down a serial killer that creates snowmen before committing a murder. The killer has a fascination with Hole. Lives up to its reputation as being one of the best Harry Hole thrillers. It doesn‘t let up with the excitement and suspense. 8/10 I will take a break from my Hole marathon till a later date.
