Eight ordinary people. One extraordinary choice.
It seems like any other day. You wake up, pour a cup of coffee, and head out.
But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small wooden box. This box holds your fate inside: the answer to the exact number of years you will live.
From suburban doorsteps to desert tents, every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise?
As society comes together and pulls apart, everyone faces the same shocking choice: Do they wish to know how long they’ll live? And, if so, what will they do with that knowledge?
The Measure charts the dawn of this new world through an unforgettable cast of characters whose decisions and fates interweave with one another: best friends whose dreams are forever entwined, pen pals finding refuge in the unknown, a couple who thought they didn’t have to rush, a doctor who cannot save himself, and a politician whose box becomes the powder keg that ultimately changes everything.
Enchanting and deeply uplifting, The Measure is a sweeping, ambitious, and invigorating story about family, friendship, hope, and destiny that encourages us to live life to the fullest.

I really loved the premise of this book. It captured my interest right away and held it all the way through. I think maybe there were too many characters and it was a lot to keep track of all the different stories. But, I loved the concept and the way it was written. I think this could definitely be a really cool movie if they adapted it. Definitely a thought provoking and interesting book.

This was an interesting concept for a book. It made me think about life and living and it has some great discussion topics for a book club. My big question is what happens with life insurance after the strings are released? If you have a short one, can you sign up for insurance knowing you don‘t have long to live and how does insurance companies respond. That‘s my big question.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I wondered the same! 4mo

I listened to this on audio and enjoyed it. The concept is interesting…getting a mystery string that tells a person the length of their lives if they choose to look at it. I liked the characters and how the author made their story strings intertwine. My favorite message is that the most important thing is that we get a string at all, not the length of it.

I read this for book club, and found the concept intriguing: every adult receives a mysterious box containing a length of string that corresponds to the length of their life. While the book explores the ramifications in interesting ways, it relies on coincidence a bit too much, and some of the characters lacked depth. I didn't feel strongly about any of them. Still, it was thought-provoking and should make for an interesting book club discussion.

Life is completely normal for the world until a day when all adults receive a box. In the box is a string, all are different lengths for each person depending on how long you‘re going to live. The book goes through a handful of different characters stories whether they have a long string or a short string or even some that don‘t open the box at all. Was a great read but still left me pondering some at the end!

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks This sounds similar to 9mo

Out of nowhere every person on the planet over the age of 22 receives a small box containing a string, the length of which will tell you just how long your life will be. Some choose to look, others do not. But the world quickly arrives at all kinds of opinions, public policies, and judgements about short-stringers and long-stringers. It‘s a fascinating and timely exploration of what constitutes the quality and measure of a life.

Loved this… such a surprise. There was a thread of hopefulness, humanity and even love, that ran through the novel that I really liked. It was perfect for my book club… lots of great discussion. Would you open the box? If you did, would it change how you lived? How would we react as a whole, individually, as nations… a speculative pick that really made us all think. #52bookclub24 #pop24 #morethan3POV #morethan4POV

My book club chose this. While I think it will probably provoke a good discussion, I felt like the author pushed an agenda at the expense of any substantial character development. I think I‘ll stick with Atwood and Orwell for speculative fiction.

This was fascinating, beautiful, & heartbreaking. It delved into politics, moral dilemmas & the question: is it better to have loved & lost or never to have loved at all. I savored it, thinking about each new quandary the characters faced. Would you open your box? Would you date or hire a short stringer? Should legislation be in place to regulate how they are treated? The parallels for other social persecution are obvious. So much to discuss!

this was an interesting concept, really well-written and carefully thought out. there isn‘t really a plot per se, just character vignettes about how the strings affect their lives. the way the characters‘ stories intertwined kind of reminded me of Love Actually. it took me a while to get through the audiobook and I sorta had a hard time remembering what was going on with each character. I might have done better just reading it. 4 ⭐️s! #audiobook

I really enjoyed this one! Everyone in the world receives a string that measures how long they will live, some long some short. This causes division in society, & the books follows a variety of characters with different string lengths. I liked how all the characters intersected. The story was reminiscent of Covid and US elections in 2020, just everything turning upside down and how people react. My only complaint is it dragged a bit in the middle.

I ended up liking the concept more than the execution. Seemed to have a lot of build up but lacked follow through. Wasn‘t bad, but somehow not a lot of emotional impact or connection. As people struggled to make decisions or figure out their next steps, the impact on them and their families was seen more than felt.

A v unique story and that‘s what kept me reading The writing is good but the characters are a bit stereotypical I would have liked to have had stories from around the world in different countries to get a better perspective. About a quarter before the end it became too sugary and over sentimental for me and I had to race through to the end. It lost an edge I felt and rushed to tie up all the stories. Would still make a great book club discussion.

Started The measure this week and I have to say it‘s an unique story. Well written although I‘m not convinced by some of the characters. I‘m hoping it‘s not religious or has an ultimately “moral” story as I would prefer a more scientific explanation or even a supernatural twist. I really like it so far.

The concept, riveting! The characters…I found some of them to be highly insufferable. Despite the characters that were ridiculous social caricatures, the style of writing is very good! And the well-written characters were great to read about, and their scope/development was rewarding to read. But as stated earlier, the star of this book is the concept, not the characters. Worth reading? I think so. Wouldn‘t read it twice, but glad I read it once.

A 4.5 out of 5 stars for the refreshing topic of how the world (especially the west) reacted to boxes containing strings representing each life‘s span. Erlick cleverly weaves this multi plot point story to cover all human concerns and reactions to the information on a personal and en masse level. Well done!

This was a reread for me since I was in charge of both hosting and leading my book club discussion on this book. I watched a pile of YouTube interviews with the author to hep prepare. But after finding a podcast discussion sans author where the 1st comment was the dislike of the book, I lead with would you open your box vs who liked/disliked it. Good decision as the discussion was great and it turned out only 4/13 people liked the book! ↓

marleed Of course, I served spaghetti, and more people ate the string cheese than I expected. My licorice strings got a big laugh, but way too much is left for me to eat on my own! 2y
MaureenMc I love your menu! 😆 2y
marleed @MaureenMc It was fun! I bought string beans but forgot to practice the recipe, but no one seemed to notice :). On the podcast, the first person speaking didn‘t like the book. It changed the trajectory of the discussion for the next the 90 minutes. Even those liking it, noted it‘s flaws. I wanted to avoid that so I didn‘t ask about opinions of the book until the end. Interesting to realize opinions after such an eventful discussion. 2y

One day, everyone wakes up to a box that holds a string that shows the measure of your life. How the world responds is as vast as the cast of characters the book contains. Took me a bit longer to finish than I thought, but overall I really enjoyed this book. It‘s a book I‘ll keep returning to, not because of the writing or story but to consider the real world applications.
