This was an impulse read because I spent some time in Beaufort, SC last week. I‘m really glad I read this sweeping, epic story of the Wingo family. It was a bit too drawn out in some places, but overall an excellent read. I might have to read it again now that I know what happens in the end.

Penny_LiteraryHoarders This sits on my all-time-favourites. Absolutely loved this book. 3y

A sweeping epic about one horribly damaged family and a love letter to the American south without ignoring the ugly parts. Holy crap was this engrossing. I was very into it. It was overwritten, overwrought, so dramatic, but it worked for me, I was so sucked in I actually didn't want it to end.

It's been waiting on my shelf for two years, but thanks to #bookspin I finally took the dive! @TheAromaofBooks

Reggie I remember friends and I reading this in high school and thinking ‘did we need those last 200 pages? Did Luke need to die?” But we still overall liked it. Lol 4y

Tom‘s stories of the childhood he shared with his siblings are simultaneously fascinating and horrible, and it is interesting to follow along as he unravels how they each ended yo where they are today. But I felt like his reflections were often filled with superfluous metaphors and descriptions that resulted in whole paragraphs I could skip without missing much of the story.

I have never seen this movie so I went into this book completely blind, and I‘m glad that I did. The story of Tom Wingo and his family‘s complicated history in the low country of South Carolina is one I won‘t soon forget. Conroy certainly had a way with words and I will definitely pick up some of his other works.

Lynnsoprano You can‘t go wrong with Conroy‘s books. I‘ve never seen the movie, either. I did find that having visited Charleston and the Low Country a few times really helped me visualize the settings. 5y
Ncostell @Lynnsoprano. I don‘t think I‘m going to watch the movie because I don‘t want to ruin my experience with the book. I did go to Charleston as a kid on a family vacation many years ago and I‘d love to go back again. My sister-in-law moved there recently so I‘ll have to visit! 5y

Headed into Beaufort, SC. Pat Conroy lived in and wrote about this area in very moving ways; so I‘ve tagged The Prince of Tides, my favorite of his books. Listened to Death of a Perfect Wife. My phone claims I‘ve walked 1.3 miles today; I feel like all I‘ve done is ride in a car. Nevertheless, I‘m going to go with it for #bookfitnesschallenge #goteam #bfcr2

#WinterWonderland #runningonthinicewithtigers There‘s a couple of escaped convicts who get what they deserve after they do what they did. Just FYI, for those of you haven‘t read this, they get killed by a tiger a crazy father keeps at a gas station as means of attracting business. I‘ve only read this and Beach Music by Pat Conroy. Maybe I‘ll take a look at one of his others.

Cinfhen I thought I saw the movie but I don‘t remember any tiger🤪and I‘ve always meant to read Pat Conroy 6y

Reggie @Cinfhen Thanks!! In the movie I think the tiger gets shown in a dream sequence. One of Conroy‘s books is used by his mom in court as evidence of abuse when she was divorcing his father. Beach Music has a Holocaust survivor story in it, it‘s not the whole book but there‘s a reason it‘s there. It was pretty good. 6y
erzascarletbookgasm Ah, okay, thanks for explaining the connection..never read him. 6y
Reggie @erzascarletbookgasm He‘s pretty good. The two books I‘ve read of his have to do with extremely dysfunctional families and how the kids of those families cope or don‘t as adults. He passed away a couple of years ago. 6y
Cinfhen I‘m gonna make it a mission to read a Conroy this year....thanks for the push, Reggie❣️ 6y

Suet624 Ugh. 6y

For the #jasuary16 giveaway you @Jas16 my favourite literary siblings are from one of my all time favourite books. Twins Tom and Savannah Wingo and older brother Luke, share a terrible violent childhood at the hands of their brutal father. Their mother is a manipulative bitch and not much help. As adults, Tom gets on with life disguising his feelings with humour, Savannah meanwhile becomes a poet. She suffers a breakdown (one of many) 👇🏼

DeborahSmall It is this breakdown however that brings her twin brother Tom to New York to help her, he meets with her psychiatrist and finally tells her the truth of their horrendous, but at times hysterical upbringing. This book will forever be in my top 5 ❤️❤️❤️ 7y

I thought it was about time to read Conroy since I've lived my entire life in the Georgia-lina area and heard mythical tales about the author. This book did not disappoint. An epic tale of family, loyalty, and tragedy written like a love poem to the South. My only issue with the book was the dialogue between characters, which I didn't find to be genuine nor did it flow well in my opinion.
