Knee surgery yesterday, and now reading at 3am... glad this hospital room doesn‘t have yellow or patterned walls. Might make me feel a little crazy. Read this back in high school lit, but didn‘t remember a thing about it. It‘s okay. Good morning!

Read this for a class on classic American short stories.
It touched me deeply. And it was downright disturbing, too. I'm looking forward to discussing it in class. Hopefully I can get my feelings sorted out til then.

Creepy, haunting...

This short story from a 19th century feminist was a poignant reminder of how misunderstood both women and mental illness have been throughout history.

Cosmos_Moon Love this vintage cover! I had to read this back in HS, but want to revisit since it was just referenced in Mental by Jaime Lowe that I am reading now. Have it in a short story compilation TBR. (edited) 2mo
SoManyBooksNotEnoughTime @Cosmos_Moon definitely worth a re-read, still seems to have relevance today 2mo

The Yellow Wallpaper remains one of my favorite short stories, and I am equally disturbed every time I re-read it.

In the midst of moving with her husband, the narrator cannot help but stare at her yellow wallpaper. Something is wrong with this paper and just gets worse with every page.

The color. The smell. And wait... is there a face behind the paper? A woman trying to get out?

Loved the downward spiral into pure insanity. Five stars!

BookwormM This is an amazing short story really evocative 11mo

Ok, #ScreamsByMail folks, I have done a bit of research on horror novels written by women and discovered these. Any preference? I realized that (except for the title) Exquisite Corpse may not be a good fit for us. Any must-avoid here? Any preference? This is Part 1 of 2 based on this list: https://www.unboundworlds.com/2018/03/best-horror-novels-women/

“The Yellow Wallpaper” is the story of cures that were worse than the disease.
""The narrator of the story was a representation of all women in that society, who were trapped by their men. Women in that time period, unfortunately were better seen, not heard." (http://blogs.setonhill.edu/JasonPugh/011211.html)

Read this short story in 1 sitting. It is the story of a woman's descent into madness following the birth of her child and the subsequent enforced rest. She is taken to a country house to recover and spends most of her time confined to a room with horrid yellow wallpaper. The description of the room makes me think what happens to the woman has happened in the past. A creepy, thought provoking read.

Copwithabook This goes down as one of my all time favorites. I‘d love to see someone make it into a movie! 2y
Cosyreader Great story - I reread this the other week and there was a short bio accompanying it. I was sad to learn that she went through this in real life (confined to her room for weeks after giving birth) because people didn‘t understand or tolerate post-natal depression 🙁 2y

Amazon has it with the excellent 1913 explanation. Save the introduction for last. Enjoy the illustrations. I think this one is free.

I know Serial has it but it's missing the intro and the italics.

I had curtains as a child which belonged in the nursery with the yellow wallpaper. Hours spent tracing those lines. Such busy flowers!

I always wanted to write a short about poison green wallpaper.

I remembered reading this short story in college, and while it is a well written short story which gives some pause to think - was it set on by a post partum depression, for example - I just do not get along with short stories much. I love longer archs and more character development.

Out of the three short stories I read this month this one is my absolute favorite. Nothing like a little insanity and horrid wallpaper to make you fall down a sinister rabbit hole. With many symbolic touches to the ideals of feminism this story escalates with each page and by the end has you wondering if you are apart of the yellow wallpaper.

A good fast creepy and disturbing read--just two issues on Serial Reader. I'd been meaning to read it since reading 'The Evening Spider' (the book tagged below) that also featured a 'rest cure' for what was likely postpartum depression that pushed a woman into madness. I'm glad I finally worked it in--Gilman was definitely ahead of her time. 👍📚

This is a haunting story.
A cautionary tale, if you want, with elements of Gothic suspense the story describes a women's downward spiral to madness brought on by neglect and a forced separation from what she can call hers as her husband ignores her and the problem and her daughter is cared for by someone else.
The story is so well written it becomes timeless considering how some are still being treated this way.

What a chilling and claustrophobic tale this is, and so concisely written! A study of the (19th Century) male, 'rational', superiority complex as much as of the slide into mental illness of an intelligent woman deprived of all occupation and essentially kept in solitary confinement, this short book had me feeling tense from beginning to end. It's powerful stuff!
