The Namesake | Jhumpa Lahiri
Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies established this young writer as one the most brilliant of her generation. Her stories are one of the very few debut works -- and only a handful of collections -- to have won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Among the many other awards and honors it received were the New Yorker Debut of the Year award, the PEN/Hemingway Award, and the highest critical praise for its grace, acuity, and compassion in detailing lives transported from India to America. InThe Namesake, Lahiri enriches the themes that made her collection an international bestseller: the immigrant experience, the clash of cultures, the conflicts of assimilation, and, most poignantly, the tangled ties between generations. Here again Lahiri displays her deft touch for the perfect detail -- the fleeting moment, the turn of phrase -- that opens whole worlds of emotion. The Namesake takes the Ganguli family from their tradition-bound life in Calcutta through their fraught transformation into Americans. On the heels of their arranged wedding, Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli settle together in Cambridge, Massachusetts. An engineer by training, Ashoke adapts far less warily than his wife, who resists all things American and pines for her family. When their son is born, the task of naming him betrays the vexed results of bringing old ways to the new world. Named for a Russian writer by his Indian parents in memory of a catastrophe years before, Gogol Ganguli knows only that he suffers the burden of his heritage as well as his odd, antic name. Lahiri brings great empathy to Gogol as he stumbles along the first-generation path, strewn with conflicting loyalties, comic detours, and wrenching love affairs. With penetrating insight, she reveals not only the defining power of the names and expectations bestowed upon us by our parents, but also the means by which we slowly, sometimes painfully, come to define ourselves. The New York Times has praised Lahiri as "a writer of uncommon elegance and poise."The Namesake is a fine-tuned, intimate, and deeply felt novel of identity.

1. I am not named after anyone, but I gave my daughter my middle name: Nicole. She is not a fan! 🙃

2. I can't think of any novels with an Erin, but The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri features a main character originally named Gogol after the Russian author Nikolai Gogol.

It took a long time for me to become invested in this story of a Bengali couple that moves to the U.S. and starts their own family. Yet, in the end I really enjoyed reading Gogol‘s story.

After all the years I've owned it and sold it, I never had a good idea what this was about. I'm glad I finally read it. Ironically, I'd been partially waiting because I have a Gogol short story collection that was a gift from a mentor that I still haven't read that I thought I should read first. Gogol is still waiting for the right time, but this was perfect.

This book left me feeling troubled. The main character, and many of the other characters, are so unsettled. I realize many of us ‘fake it til we make it‘ and don‘t really know how to do something, but pull up our pants & figure it out. But to have that uncertainty called our left me feeling unsettled. I did enjoy the experiences of Bengali immigrants and seeing their children grow up in America.

What an excellent read! The reader follows the Ganguli family from their roots in India to the United States. As the couple tries to form a new log for themselves and they begin a family, the narrative shifts to their son, Gogol. Full of everyday life, forming a portrait of what it is like to be an immigrant and first generation American. Gogol struggles with his identity and his ties to his heritage. Slow moving, but powerful. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

An observation that contains a spoiler, but I felt compelled to share. Marked as a spoiler in the first comment.

Elizabeth2 Reading this as someone who has suffered the loss of both of my parents, I cringed at Gogol‘s lack of care when it came to his parents. I know how easy it is to find them a bother, but I also know the regret that comes after their loss. I wanted to shake him and tell him “one day they won‘t be here.” When he ultimately loses his Baba and reflects on all of the times his father was good and kind. Those we don‘t see when our parents are alive. 💔 3y
EvieBee Yeah, I know what you mean. That drove me nuts when I read this back in 2005. I should probably reread it. I‘m sorry that you‘ve lost your parents. 3y
Elizabeth2 @EvieBee I‘m glad it wasn‘t just me. It was really bothering me. We all think we have time, until we don‘t, and those who have suffered a loss (any loss) really understand that. What I wouldn‘t give to know more of my parents‘ history now, and they were trying to give that to him in their way. They knew they wouldn‘t always be there. I haven‘t read much past that point, but I‘m predicting that he may feel a hunger for his heritage now. I know I do 3y

In Covid quarantine until Thursday morning. Started with my daughter a week ago, then one of the boys went into quarantine, and now me (because said boy sneezed a dozen times when taking his rapid test and I was about a foot away from him). I‘m stuck in my little bedroom. Feeling okay - just normal cold symptoms. This isn‘t anything that would have slowed me down pre-Covid. But since I‘m stuck here….maybe this will give my reading a boost!

Elizabeth2 I‘m feeling grateful for my vaccine and booster, and lucky with this milder variant. I feel for those who were infected with a more serious variant. 💕 3y

I love the way that Lahiri explores the ‘everyday‘, the mundane, the minutiae of life.

We meet the protagonist, named Gogol almost by mistake, as he is born and follow him through to his married life, getting to know his friends, family and lovers along the way.

A story about how the experiences of life shape and develop a person‘s identity. What‘s in a name? Can a person reinvent themselves in the wake of cultural displacement? Readers follow Gogol and his family as they navigate their experiences in the midst of two worlds simultaneously, while both belonging and not belonging in either. Lahiri‘s beautiful descriptions, especially of the traditional Indian foods, had my mouth watering. #doublespin

The Namesake (2003) is the debut novel by American author Jhumpa Lahiri. It explores many of the same emotional and cultural themes as Lahiri's Pulitzer Prize-winning short story collection Interpreter of Maladies. The novel moves between events in Calcutta, Boston, and New York City, and examines the nuances involved with being caught between two conflicting cultures with distinct religious, social, and ideological differences.

📚📚📚📚 I realize that I enjoy novels about the lives of people in fiction rather than memoir or biography. Following a Bengali family from Calcutta, the story goes through their ups and downs. Written in a very linear fashion with direct phrasing and unambiguous description. This is August #tbrandamovie pick - the movie to be watched at the end of the month.

Here‘s my August TBR. My “game” to bring down my 3440+ TBR is earning points per page read which equals out to $$ at the end of the month/year to buy more books 😎. TBH, I‘ve had 4 interviews with no offers…it‘s looking more and more like I won‘t be going back into teaching which is a bit of a bummer. And that means working something else - any former teachers out there have suggestions? I‘ve been unemployed a year so I have to find work soon.

A young couple move from Calcutta to live in Boston 1968. Their children are born American, & their culture still deep in Calcutta. A very moving & universal book about family & love.
I will use it for #setinIndia for booked2020 as it is partly set in India.

Cathythoughts @CarolynM It‘s good story! And I thought it improved as it went along. Also I think your doing the Canada challenge... I‘m on Alice Munro now - short stories called Open Secrets- for Ontario , she is brilliant... I‘m blown away ! Have you read her ? I thought I‘d try a story & now I can‘t put it down ( & I‘m not a short story fan at all - not until now ) 4y
CarolynM I read one of her collections once, probably more than 10 years ago. I remember that I liked her writing but I had that feeling of "why?" which I sometimes get with short stories. I will keep her in mind, though. I had forgotten she's a Canadian. 4y
Cathythoughts @CarolynM I have a feeling of “ why? “ too ... but in a way of wonder & awe , I can‘t stop wondering why she was crying in one story , or what really happened... but it‘s “why “ in a good way 4y

“A glowing miniature of a tiny family making the voyage between two worlds.” Gogol, born in America, strives to break free and live the life he wants. His parents, having left India at the start of their married life for a new life in the US, struggle with the distance from their families and the slow loss of their traditions. Beautifully and sparingly written, I loved this so much.
