So ... successfully kicked my Amazon/Kindle book buying habit! Yay me!

Replaced it with a NetGalley/book requesting habit! Nay me 😐

I'm no better off at all - well, except financially ☺ - as my TBR is growing just as fast!

Seriously, how is a reader to resist? I'm the proverbial kid in the candy store. Zero willpower.

I know that, in common with most bookworms, I will never conquer Mount TBR, but it's just out of control 😲

Does anyone have any useful advice/books/resources that can actually help with procrastination/time management/ getting your act together?

I went freelance last year, and while I love the work, I'm making a right old hash of working to deadlines while being in my house. If I don't sort myself out, I'm going to have to go back and work for the man again. Urgh.

BookishMe I may need to check out that book myself... I wish I knew what to suggest, having been a freelancer for more than a decade. As an incorrigible procrastinatinator, last minute remains my productivity trigger ;o like right now, I should be handling a small pile of work but... 😒☹️😕 7y

merelybookish I wish! While writing my diss I read every book I could find (arguably another form of procrastination. 🤔) and I still struggle. In a way, I've tried to make peace with it, which has helped me be more realistic about how long things will take and to identify the parts of a project I can get done before panic hits. 7y

knittedgnome I have good luck upping my productivity by using a bullet journal. Helps keep me accountable and remember all the little things. 7y

BookishMe @RachelO execution is a bummer! I came across this idea for 'Done' list instead of a To do list. It helped somewhat to see that I got some things done, than not. Maybe that could help you? 7y

BookishMe @merelybookish agree about making peace, at least I don't beat myself up too much nowadays... I too used to underestimate the time required (and overestimate myself :o) but somehow still not giving tasks proper priority 7y

knittedgnome I keep my pretty basic but also like to make trackers for some things. I use two pages for a week on the left I break into a grid for each day. On the right I list my tasks broken down into chunks if possible. Then I fill in the days from my calendar if there are any commitments. Next I look at my to do list and assign things days. I do add more to my list as the week goes on and assign those as needed. 7y

CouronneDhiver Get a simple timer! One hour of actual work = five minute break. You might surprise yourself. 😊 7y

Redwritinghood I don‘t have a book recommendation, but as someone who works at home I can tell you two things that have worked for me. 1) have a dedicated work space so that when you go there it‘s just like going to the office 2) to-do lists with due dates - I use Microsoft Outlook for that. EvieBee I heard about this one on a Podcast and I liked it! Then I got a bullet journal instead of spending lots of money on a time slot planner and it‘s helped me a lot to track what I feel is important.

168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think

jpmcwisemorgan I‘m going to second what‘s been said here and add that rewarding myself helped - if I got what needed to be done accomplished then I could do something fun. The reverse is true too, though. If I‘m not getting work done, then I get regular breaks but not as much fun time. Also, try breaking things down so you don‘t burn out on a project. A little every day goes a long way and sometimes it‘s easier to see progress when it‘s not all at once. 7y

TheWordJar I can relate to everything you are going through! Also a freelancer who can‘t get motivated until the last minute. Unfortunately, I have no helpful advice. In fact, it feels like it‘s getting worse the older I get. So, I guess thank you for posting this, and a big thanks to everyone who‘s offered advice! 7y

LauraBeth I am the world‘s BIGGEST procrastinator! I read this book about 7 years ago and still apply the methods that I learned. It really helped me.

Signed books together, then YA, then by genre or nationality;I have my Scottish and Irish authors together, unless of course I own a signed copy.... I need a few more bookcases and then I can move around within stepping on piles of books ❤️ 7y

LiteraryinPA I would say probably not Turtles All The Way Down. I loved the book, but the main character has major anxieties surrounding germs and illness. Probably stressful to read in a hospital. Thinking of you and your family! 7y

TommieMarie74 I recommend Devil in the White City by Erik Larson or Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt. Also, not an audio book but I highly recommend the podcast Small Town Murders. 😊 7y

It's not true crime, but if you like his writing, you might want to listen to Where Men Win Glory. It was really good. Sebastian Junger is also a really good writer. The first of his I read was The Perfect Storm.

One of my Facebook friends started volunteering in a Muslim school‘s library in NM, and she discovered that their nonfiction books are all over thirty years old! There‘s no money in their budget to get new books for the library. So, this is my holiday season project this year: I‘m going to donate some books to this school. Would any of you be interested in contributing as well?

LibrarianJen I‘m not sure if they do donations. She would have to call and find out. I do know that they can host a scholastic bookfair and then they get an option of cash or scholastic dollars from the proceeds. Scholastic dollars would give them more money to go towards books. 7y
