I love Beukes‘s writing and her refusal to shy away from the grotesque. I‘m also always a fan of books that cover multiple points of view. What I liked best about this book, though, was the constant time jumps between chapters so I had to really pay attention to keep track of who was currently in danger.

Book 3🎧 2.5⭐️

This one just didn‘t do it for me, there is a lot to keep track of. At first I didn‘t know what was going on, then I realized there‘s time travel😂

I did appreciate the MPOV and narrators as I surely would have been far more confused without them!

I also appreciate the level of detail the author went into for each time period. You really get a sense of the big issues that were happening at the time. Plus some badass women!

This is my pick for May. I read and enjoyed another book by Beukes before, but I sort of put this book off because I‘m not a huge time travel fan. Total mistake. I think the time travel aspect made this so different and interesting.

I always enjoy Beukes's books, and this one, with its glimpses of Chicago throughout the 20th century, is no exception. The many victims have distinct personalities, and the villain is remorseless and unhinged. There are two wordings I noticed that aren't quite what an American would say (describing honking cars as "hooting" and referring to French "plaiting" instead of braiding), but spotting those kinds of things is a fun scavenger hunt for me.

3.5⭐️ It‘s wavering between a pick and so-so because I basically sped read it for my #bookclub meeting over the last couple of days. I like that the book is basically light #horror and there is not a lot gore in it, at least what I was interpreting. Like the #timetravel aspect to book & that while it‘s set in the contemporary world to a degree, it‘s still far enough in the past. #2022 #historicalfiction #bookreview #bookstagram

This is not my normal reading material but I was drawn in and really enjoyed the story, gritty and very gory at times but an interesting and riveting tale.

Snacking and reading. I really hope to finish this hook today.

Yesterday we went for a nice bushwalking‘s and found this view. Today I‘m finishing a crochet project and reading (hopefully finishing) my book.

Feels like a good time to start a scary story.

Halloween vibes 2/3
Fall vibes involve straight up scary but also general creepy w/ a bit of psychological thriller. Some favourite fall movies are: House of 1000 Corpses (trilogy), The Descent, The Shining & Beetlejuice. Just getting into the show Severance and love it. Oddly, I found Blair Witch Project very unscary/boring. Loved the tagged novel. I like most candy/chocolate, pictured are some favs

I‘m so excited for my first #Bookspin #DoubleBookspin! And I couldn‘t have asked for better picks. They are both rereads (I hope that counts 😬), but were planned rereads. I set a goal at the first of the year to read all of Maya Angelou‘s books (obviously I‘m making GREAT progress 😂).
And if all goes well, I‘ll be complaining about the AppleTV adaptation of The Shining Girls by the end of the month.

I was very unsure about this book at first but I quickly got sucked into the story. I found myself very confused for most of the book but I had to keep reading because I wanted to know what was happening. I really enjoyed the book and I think the end made up for all the confusion! Now I plan to watch the adaptation on Apple TV!

This has been on my TBR at least since I read Beukes‘ Broken Monsters in 2016. I didn‘t know I would love it and I wish I had picked it up sooner. I thought I might not love the time travel aspect and was wrong. In fact, that may be why I loved this. The writing made me feel like I stepped in to each time period with the character. Plus, it‘s gritty and about a serial killer. I found I didn‘t want to put this down so I listened and read in print.

I wasn‘t expecting this chapter, set in 1972, to be quite so relevant and for the word “forever” to feel depressing due to our current world.

Does anyone have recommendations for books on Jane?

This was bizarrely different than anything I‘ve read before, which is great! Basically about a serial killer who travels around in time, looking for his victims that “shine”, and the one woman who survived and tried to track him down. Very fast paced with lots of thrills and uncomfortable situations. Ended somewhat abruptly for me but other than that a real solid read. Excited to watch the show based on it!

I just screamed so loud that I scared the cat. 🙀 I had no idea this was happening and I‘m so excited…I LOOOVVVEED this book! The trailer looks like maybe quite a bit has been changed, but I still can‘t wait. Now I‘m just wondering…is a week enough time for a reread? 🤔

My sleep schedule is royally messed, so I‘m going to clean the apartment at 2am while I listen to the tagged audio. Before I do that though, I have to share my week 2 #TeamSlaughter points! Thanks to the word game, and better planning of my chosen Readathon books I came out 26,250. Although I wasn‘t the best at updated in week three, I am more than happy with my points. I‘m glad I got that boost, since I know my stats will be lower in week 4.

A friend recently recommended The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes to me. Upon looking up the synopsis, I knew this was definitely something that I‘d like to read, so I added it to my wishlist. It follows a time traveling serial killer and a surviving victim. It sounds crazy, creepy, and incredibly unique! I was extremely excited to find a secondhand copy yesterday when I was at the bookstore!

Trying to read from my shelves a bit more this week, as opposed to library books and review copies. This is up next!

Another great rec from @vivastory for #NewYearWhoDis! Love how Beukes captured Chicago from the 1930s through 1990s with a house that serves as a wormhole. Unique and gritty serial killer story!

I loved Beukes' Broken Monsters & the tagged book has been on my shelves for a couple of years. I finished it about five minutes ago & it did not disappoint. Beukes' novel is about WWI veteran & psychopath, Harper Curtis, who finds a way to travel through time. He becomes a time traveling serial killer & one of his victims survives & is determined to find him. Cleverly constructed, relentlessly engaging & entertaining with social commentary to 👇

I‘m going to keep going with this book-I don‘t love it, but I like it, and it fits one of the categories for the Popsugar Reading Challenge.

Book confession time: I put this book down last time I tried it, but I want to give it one more try because I‘ve heard so much about it.

The first half of this book was so confusing!! It‘s told from the perspective of different characters, in different periods of time. It took a while to get used to it. Once I figured out what was going on, I began to enjoy the story.

This was so great! I‘d read it again! Great way to round out my annual reading challenge!

I liked the story, but didn't love. It's a story about a time traveling serial killer (Harper) & the woman (Kirby) who survived his grotesque attack & searches for answers. The story is told from multiple POV & multiple time periods.

I thought Harper was a bit one dimensional & there were a lot of scenes lacking in suspense. I also would have liked if the author would have touched more on the aftermath, it felt unfinished.

Made pumpkin pecan bread while listening to The Shining Girls. I'll probably read a bit more and call it a night for my first #readathon

Crime/murder books aren‘t usually my thing, but this one had enough twists to keep me interested. What I liked: time-traveling serial killer premise, non-linear structure (even if a little confusing in audiobook form), strong female characters (even if most of them end up dead). But, it was definitely more plot-driven than character-developed, and with the POV shifts, it felt like something was missing, especially in Harper‘s sections.

Just bought Audible's daily deal, it seems like I've been doing better at listening to audiobooks than reading actual books lately. Now I'm getting stocked up, this one has been on my TBR for awhile. 😊

A time traveling serial killer may be my most hated villain of the year.

Not my usual type of read due to its fantasy nature. How we I really enjoyed this book. Slightly confusing at times but very well thought out.

This book has a great premise but doesn‘t quite stick the landing. It‘s about a time travelling serial killer and one of his victims. I think FOR ME it would have benefited from way more detail in the different time periods, but other readers may not agree. It does get very brutal a few times in what I considered a non-gratuitous way. Enjoyed it but didn‘t blow me away like I‘d hoped.
