More book nerd news. . . Mr Tolkien lovingly curated his father‘s work. I‘m not sure my generation would have had the access to it we enjoyed growing up were it not for him.

Here‘s the link to the story in the Guardian:

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sorry to just tag everyone on your post, but we‘ve been reading his Histories of Middle Earth together 13h

JazzFeathers Can't say it was unexpected, and still it touched me very much. Our fitte fellowship has gone a long way together and much of the journey was guide by Christopher. I was thinking how strange it is that yesterday, just before l learned of the news, l was reading the chapter 'Strider' 😢 7h

I‘m now listening to The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. I like the narrator of this audiobook. I‘m participating in a readalong this year of the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy and it‘s called #lotreadalong2020. I‘ve been wanting to read these books for awhile. I‘m going to listen to all of them on Audible.

When i first read this book i was not pleased to be doing so, it was an enforced pre-requisit before being allowed to read the lord of the rings. After reading it i was happy i had done so - not only is it an entertaining and enrichening tale in its own right, it adds a lot more depth to its sequal

#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView

1. Yes, I reread 6 books in 2019. I used to reread a lot, and haven't much for a long time, so I really enjoyed it. I hope to start rereading more again.

2. So hard to pick, I had a great reading month. I'll say a tie between Le Guin's The Dispossessed and my reread of The Hobbit.

TheSpineView Great reads! Happy Tuesday! 2w

#FellowshipOfTolkien #ThereAndBackAgain

There is always such a sense of loss in Tolkien's concluding chapters, even when a lot is gained.
I often shed some tears at the end of his stories. It wasn't any different this rime.
There's such a masterful mix of sadness and happyness in this closing chapter.
It always saddens me to live Middle-Earth, but in The Hobbit, l do it with a smile.

Linsy It is such an impactful ending! I felt so much nostalgia for the beginning, but glad to be back and snuggled. 🥰 3w

I like that, in spite of all the bad things that happened in the last few chapters, things end on a positive note.
The dwarves show their worst and their best in these last chapters, what complex characters they truly are.

I'm always pleasantly surprised of how Tolkien writes battle scenes, which is one of the hardest things to do in storytelling.
He never confuses. I always have the sensation he perfectly knows what's happening and so l know too. He has a great sense of the epic, and still some passages are very personal.

He's fantastic.

I hope everyone has had a chance to finish or is able to catch-up over this weekend.

I just want to say that I loved re-reading this with you all, and at this time of year it seemed like such a good fit...one chapter a day and each chapter a small self contained mini adventure, like an advent calendar of short stories combining into one book.

There's a reason why this part of story sounds so different from the first part. Tolkien wrote it at the end, beginning to end, after a long pause and it is almost a story in its own right. A legend in its own right. Tolkien's love for legends, that crept in in the central episodes of the books, here bold lying came to the fore.

Fantastic!

This is such a great part of the story. There's great psychology here, in the Master, in Bard and in the relation between them. I love how Bard's ancestry awakens in him when the opportunity presents itself.
This is truly the stuff of legends that Tolkien loved.

My PRECIOUS story. We loves it, we loves it, we loves it forever!

So happy to have gone “there and back again” with Bilbo on his humble journey with the dwarves and Gandalf. It‘s been a long time since the first time around when I was a child. I can promise you it was a different read. When I was a kid, it was a book about a treasure of gold and a dragon.👇🏽

Nute I‘m sure that in that time before I did not witness Bilbo‘s moment of self discovery and the finding of a heroic brave soul. Lovely! It was fantastical then and magnificent now...utterly magical AGAIN!

"The mere fleeting glimpes of treasures which they had caught as they went along had rekindled all the fire of their dwarvish hearts; and when the heart of a dwarf, even the most respectable, is wakened by gold and by jewels, he grows suddenly bold, and he may become fierce."

Here's where the complexity of the character of the dwarves surfaces.

"A Warm Welcome" is where the Hobbit stars to become more nounced.
The psychological subtlety with which the Master is depicting and his reasons are fantastic and allow to read the story on different levels.
The dwarves once again demonstrate their complexity. "Still - all very much at your service once more, Mr. Baggins. No doubt we shall feel properly grateful, when we are fed and recovered."
