We have way too many bookshelves spread across the house so I decided to snap a few pics of my fave bookish pieces. From the top we have my husband's kindle cover that is Thorin's map from the Hobbit and then the first booknook I ever made. Bottom left is our Mortal Kombat bookends. Bottom right is our fancy Horrorish books and Cthullu booknook.

A reread for me. The last time I read it I was in middle school. I was shocked at how much of my memory of it had been hijacked by the films. I‘m curious to see how much I misremember from the following trilogy. 😅 This will always be a very nostalgic story for me. I felt a profound connection to the young woman I was when I first read it and fell in love with Tolkien‘s world. ❤️
This was part of my February #Roll100

lil1inblue I love the last sentence of your review. It really resonated! 😍 1mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @lil1inblue Aww, I‘m glad! It‘s crazy to think of what my life would be like without LOTR. It‘s such an integral part of who I am that I really think I‘d be a vastly different person without it. 4w

1. Yes! But not for a long time…I might have to rectify that soon. Blanket fort reading is always spectacular.

2. The tagged book because when I was little there was one winter when every weekend my mom would read a chapter of The Hobbit to my sisters & I. She read from the illustrated edition (based on the animated movie), almost always in front of the fire, & it was perfect. One of my most vivid childhood memories.

Mehso-so

This will likely not find favour with Tolkien fans, but if I were to rank the three interrelated pieces of media, the original novel, the films made from this material and the fanfic made as a result of the films, my rating would go: 1) fanfic, 2) films, 3) novel. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? While a good deal of this rating is based on my being a Bagginshield shipper, the fanfic tends to do the best job of filling out pieces where readers or viewers may have wanted to see more detail.
And of course, the wealth of fix-it fic where Thorin doesn't fucking die!
6mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? Most will find this an unfair assessment of the original work, as there really isn't enough in the original text to infer a romantic relationship between Bilbo Baggins and Thorin Oakenshield, it's not the point of that story. The subtext is present in the films chiefly because of the performance of the actors, even more so than the script, and fans just ran with it to expand on canon and fulfill the suggestion. It's not just this romance that flourishes in fanfic, though, you get all kinds of more complex windows into other characters and side ventures, that, while up to the transformative author's interpretation, enriches the world that Tolkien built. 6mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? The message at the heart of The Hobbit is present in the films and the better fanfic, though the fic I favour does its best to show that characters learn the lesson without the same tragedy. It's why I don't find myself spending much time with Tolkien-related media outside the fix-it realm. He had good reason for telling the stories he did, but they're all so goddamn sad. 6mo
Robotswithpersonality 5/5 And I can say with confidence now, having run back through his four most well known books, this ventures a little further into the high fantasy, and a narrative style that I don't love. I doubt I'll be investigating other works by this author. To each their own. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Still loved, even after many reads now…and this ending has always struck me as quite a great one.

Little did even the author know just how much this past episode would weave into a bigger trilogy to come, and the part of prophecy here… oh so very important to the future of that world, in ways the author hadn‘t yet quite even dreamed of. 😉. Without those, the wider world would not have faired quite so well. “Roads go ever ever on” indeed!

JazzFeathers So very true. Indeed, I appreciate The hobbit more every time I read it. On the surface, it's a fun, easy read, but there's so much more hidden under the surface. It's a surprising read. 7mo

Always love this chapter every time l read it.
It's the core of Tolkien's philosophy of the common sense of the people that so often become courage and even bravery.

I also like the mix of 'right' and 'wrong', which also is at the core of Tolkien's philosophy. Sometimes an apparently wrong thing is the only tight thing to do.

And here, Tolkien starts again to mix epic fantasy (think the parlay between Bard and Thorin) and lighter matter (Bilbo's considerations on the matter) with his usual mastery.

I can see how this part of story can be read at many different levels, because l too once only saw the surface.

mabell That was really my big takeaway/revelation on reading this - how many types of readers can enjoy it. Surface readers (like me) and those who appreciate the deeper story and complexities will be equally satisfied. 😊 7mo
Daisey @mabell As I read more and reread Tolkien, I appreciate the layers of his writing so much. It means I get something from it every time that I read it. 7mo
JazzFeathers @mabell That's very true. And as @Daisey said, every time we read it, we discover something new because our understanding has enlarged with every read. Despite being a quiet chapter, l really liked it. The Arkenstone makes its appearance and in the economy of The Hobbit, it's even more important than the ring.

This was a fun reread! I‘d forgotten a lot of it, especially from after the riddle chapter. Thorough gets to be kind of a jerk after they find the hoard! I really liked the message of the dragon‘s gold making people nasty and greedy—if all you‘re focused on is money, you‘re unpleasant to the people around you. Whereas Bilbo manages to give up his bit of the hoard and makes some progress toward peace… and still ends up with plenty of treasure.

I always, always enjoy Smauh's chapters, especially his conversation with Bilbo. But then, l always enjoy Tolkien's dragons. Such fascinating character. I wish Tolkien had written more about them.

It's been decades since I read this book for the first time, and I enjoyed this second read just as much. I forgot how much the 2nd-person POV was used, and it worked exquisitely; I felt like I was a kid being told this tale by Tolkien himself. One of the best hero's quests ever written because what Bilbo seeks (the dwarves' gold) is no more a symbol of what he really finds: himself and how brave he truly is. Thanks #LotRChapteraDay for the ride.

"You are not making a very splendid figure as King under the Mountain,'” said Gandalf.
"But things may change yet."

To:

Out leapt the King under the Mountain, and his companions followed him. … In the gloom the great dwarf gleamed like gold in a dying fire. … "To me! To me! Elves and Men! To me! O my kinsfolk!" he cried, and his voice shook like a horn in the valley.

Cupcake12 Love this and so true! 7mo
Daisey Yes, if only it had not taken Thorin so long to realize it. I had forgotten the context around the quote. 7mo
JazzFeathers @Daisey @Cupcake12 In the first version, Tolkien did save Thorin who became King Under the Mountain. When l first read it l though, such a pity he changed his mind, l would have loved that Thorin survived. But then l realised that Thorin is such a great, even tragic character dispute all the fun the narrator makes if him, precisely because he didn't survive. 7mo

“I have heard songs of many battles, and I have always understood that defeat may be glorious. It seems very uncomfortable, not to say distressing. I wish I was well out of it.”

JazzFeathers This is so much WWI. Tolkien's war experience filtres through in do many places of The Hobbit. It took me so much time to realise it. 7mo
BarbaraJean @JazzFeathers Yes, I didn't remember this passage from previous readings, and it struck me as reflective of Tolkien's WWI experience as well. Merry and Pippin's experiences of war in the LOTR series feel similar, but I didn't remember seeing it in The Hobbit before! 7mo
JazzFeathers @BarbaraJean It was a surprise for me too. But after starting researching WWI (for reasons unrelated to Tolkien, though then it arked back to it) l started so many little references to it even in The Hobbit. 7mo

I caught up two chapters tonight: A Thief in the Night and The Clouds burst. In the first I‘m surprised with Bilbo for basically lying and going behind his companions back. Gandalf is back! Just in the Nick of time too! 😍 #FellowshipofTolkien #LotRChapteraDay @Daisey @JazzFeathers #CatsofLitsy

Daisey The whole way he never mentions the Arkenstone is a bit tough, but he also realizes Thorin is not rational about it. (edited) 7mo
dabbe Hello, sweet kitty! 🖤🐾🖤 7mo
JazzFeathers What's right and what's wrong? That's to the core of Tolkien's philosophy. And I'm puzzled that so often it is said that there is a stark division between good and evil in Tolkien's work, because l find the exact opposite to be true: the relationship between Good and Evil is very complex and misty. And Bilbo's behaviour in this chapter is a perfect example. 7mo
