I kicked off 2020 with an incredibly powerful read. If advice columns normally aren‘t your thing, this is still so worth it. This is kind of part memoir as Cheryl responds to those writing to her by sharing her own stories and connecting them in a way that shows she put a lot of care, reflection, and empathy into each response. I enjoyed the audiobook, but I think I need a physical copy to easily revisit my favorite parts.

As a kid, I dreamt of being an advice columnist. A dream no doubt born from reading Ann Landers in the daily paper. Ann Landers had NOTHING on Sugar! Cheryl Strayed pens some of the most achingly deep, raw, wise, beautiful words I have ever read in her replies.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Which selection resonated with me during this read may be different next week, month or year, but I loved: The Human Scale, You Don't Have to be Broken for Me, The Obliterated Place ⬇️

* "Isn't love amazing that way? How it can bend with us through the years? It has to. It must. Lest it break."

My god, is this book filled with wonderful, thoughtful advice that is just so beautifully written! Strayed is able to connect on a personal level with every letter writer to her Dear Sugar column. My mother wouldn‘t like the language or Strayed‘s tendency to use the f word when talking about sex - it‘s not a book you can put in just anyone‘s hands. But I would def recommend it!

This is a special book to me as it was given to me by a great friend at a transitional time in my life.

Now, I want to pass along a copy a different great friend who is going through a rough time. Her husband committed suicide in August, and now she‘s raising two young girls on her own and dealing with difficult in-laws.

What I‘m wondering is: Is this book too intense to give as a gift to her?

kgriffith This was recommended to me by a bookseller friend a while back and I‘ve been meaning to get to it. I hope you get some feedback, and that either this or another book you find meaningful will be a balm to your friend 💜 13mo
Megabooks @kgriffith Thanks. I hope you read it and enjoy it. I‘m reading it cover to cover for the second time. There are some replies I have marked that I have read more than that. ❤️ 13mo
BookwormAHN I've never read the book, although I did read the description, in my opinion you should give her the book and a note on how it helped you. Keep the tone of the note somewhat lite and hopeful. I doubt she wants more drama but she might want chocolate. My suggestion is the book, a note and chocolate 🍫 13mo

TrishB I haven‘t read so can‘t really help. When I was going through a rough patch my friend gave me a book for similar reasons, the book didn‘t do much for me but I really appreciated her thoughtfulness and that did help,. It‘s the act of being a friend and being there ❤️ 13mo
Chrissyreadit @Megabooks I do not know the book, but I do think the gift given in love will be meaningful, treasured, and I suspect the book will be read when she is ready. 13mo
