I did not enjoy this book, possibly because it was so different from what I was expecting. I thought it would be a fictional, but fairly accurate, account of the Pendle Witch Trials, which took place in Lancashire, England in 1612. Instead, although it was based on facts, the author included some really wild speculative aspects to the story. ⬇️

In an uncanny coincidence I found a book at Gladstone's that matches my bookmark.

A surprisingly intense and interesting read.

Overall too many characters and lines of story to keep up with.

Short, enjoyable, but not overly remarkable.

I was pleasantly surprised by this one, it was a fascinating and intense little read.

Although for such a short read, there seemed to be too many characters and I never cared much for any of them.

There were moments that were sweet, light and delicate and then there were moments that were dark, brutal and ugly.

Moderately rated.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. For the most part it was pretty brutal and ugly, which is perhaps just the truth about a lot of life in England under the rule of King James I. Despite the interesting subject (the events leading up to real witch trials and execution in 1612) and Winterson's trademark spare writing, it never really grabbed me. I liked that Shakespeare had a cameo and that the main character was a real witch and queer though.

I was going to read this book a bit before bed last night but then I remembered it's pretty scary. So I saved it for this morning! #QueerBooks #Horror

Had to sit at the Apple Store for an hour this afternoon. So glad I had this with me. It is everything The Familiars wasn‘t. If you read The Familiars, please read this as well.

Finally finally FINALLY got around to this one so kindly gifted to me by @ephemeralwaltz like 200 years ago and now I don't know what to do with myself because it was the /exact/ kind of grisly that makes my skin crawl. Everything was very vivid and uncomfortable and I'm gonna have nightmares. At least I proved to myself that I /can/ read horror books. Yes, this is a horror book. No arguments. *shudders*

I read this all in one day and am left feeling bereft. This may sound crazy with a book that has 55% rating on here but this is one of my favorite books this year. About the witch trials in England around 1612, Winterson is a master of giving us all these great spooky tidbits at the edge of the story but never really tells you everything. @BookishTrish Thanks for this pick. It was amazing!!!

A fair bit of gratuitous violence that I didn‘t care for all that much, way too many characters in the beginning making it difficult to tell one from the other, a cameo of Shakespeare who spoke the words above (my fave quote), a few lyrical and well-spoken lines, but overall, a so-so for me. I honestly didn‘t know what the point was until the very end - everything devolved to “witchery popery popery witchery.” #ScreamsByMail #HorrorPostalBookClub

I really enjoyed this book. The style took a bit of getting used to but once that had happened the story had me mesmerized. I had actually expected this book to be a horror novel, however it turned out to be more like factual fiction with one or two somewhat spooky scenes. Still, I recommend this story wholeheartedly. 😊 #screamsbymail

This is still a pick although I had some trouble connecting to the story. But it's witches, women, magic, death, sex and gore - what's not to love?? A bit disturbing at times but unputdownable! Will be sending this your way this week @scripturient :) it's a very short read, I hope you enjoy!

After all this time my last #cupidgoespostal pick from @Bibliogeekery is up. I can't wait to dive into this book about the Pendle witches.

I was tempted to post about cathy from east of eden who is certainly developing into a favourite villain but instead went for jeanette winterson's take on the pendle witch story. Were they evil or simply scapegoats in the early 17th century hunt for religious persecution. I enjoyed the read.

So I also took some brownies from the library restaurant yesterday to eat today. Sadly they did not make it that far and me and the BF ate them yesterday. I reread this book that I abandoned earlier hoping that it was better than I rememberd. Sadly it is still the worst book I ever read. It's about the pendle witch trials in GB. It's full of tastless rape and gore and the story is barely there. I felt almost violated by it. Anyone else read it?

This short novel on the witch trials in 1612 England focuses on how misogyny and anti-Catholicism were the driving forces behind the witch hunts. The main character, Alice Nutter, is a powerful, bisexual woman with mysterious connections to the occult; I wanted to hear more from her and wished the book was longer. Overall, this story was dark, disturbing, and heartbreaking. There's also a cameo appearance by Shakespeare

Started reading this book about the 1612 witch trials in England by Jeanette Winterson--I love her writing and her book The Passion was one of my favorites this year.

Do we have a hashtag for spooky October reads? I loved this witchy novel that had women in it that weren't merely misunderstood. With some historical underpinnings to give a good shiver. (Besides, Winterson is one of my favorite writers.) Witchery popery popery witchery.

This slender book packs an incredible wallop. Based around the 1612 witch trials in London, it artfully blends fact and fiction. I don't want to give away the story, but I do want to highly recommend that you throw it on your spooky autumn TBR. #Recommendsday

I've read a number of Winterson's books. The Daylight Gate just didn't flip me out as much as some of her others.
