Today‘s prompt for the #chillingphotochallenge is #spell . I love this book. Everyone knows Sleeping Beauty . . . Under a sleeping spell . . . Prince Somebody . . . blah, blah, blah. But this one? This one is different. In a lovely, super Gaiman-y way with Chris Riddell‘s resplendent art. #scarathon #teamstoker Also, those crazy flowers are growing spontaneously in my sidewalk because Hank the Book Sniffer has not peed on them, miraculously. 😂
Well I'm super behind on this challenge and I have s lot of catch-up to do. I did manage 2 books for the summer category though.
16. The Sleeper and the Spindle
17. A Dark and Stormy Murder

Gorgeous illustration, but what else do you expect from Chris Riddell. They really bring the story to life and embodies the tone of the tale.
Gaiman's story however, was a little disappointing. As it was a quick read the pace never lingered, and this was the thing that let me down. It was over too fast. However, I love the Sleeping Beauty tale and glad this got a re-imagining.
“On the eve of her wedding, a young queen sets out to rescue a princess from an enchantment. She casts aside her fine wedding clothes, takes her chain mail and her sword and follows her brave dwarf retainers into the tunnels under the mountain towards the sleeping kingdom. This queen will decide her own future – and the princess who needs rescuing is not quite what she seems.”

Two thumbs up! Not only is this a retelling of a fairy tale -- which takes a dark turn and upends the story we think we know -- but it combines two fairy tales and throws in hints of others. Also, no princes were needed to save anyone! Extremely well done IMHO.

I know I‘ve been reading a lot of Gaiman this year. But his books are so magical. And I am craving magic! Just spent the day playing D&D. So I took a nice long bath and read this quick and beautiful read! Love true illustrations ! Love the fact that there is no prince to save the day only one badass queen and a princess. So beautiful so empowering ! Love love love ❤️🖤❤️
Neil Gaiman is just too wonderful. This novella is an utterly lovely take on Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. I love the attention paid to fairytale motifs 💖 Get yourself a print copy of this, rather than a Kindle one, (like I did), as the illustrations are astounding.
I need a framed print of this picture ♥️
This story will prick your imagination and set you to dreaming. I love how Gaiman took iconic fairytales, spun them together, and turned them on their ears. And he did it in a away that leaves the reader inspired and spinning their own tales. Riddell‘s illustrations depict Gaiman‘s words beautifully, while hinting at more stories unfolding beyond what was written. Together, they‘ve created a wonderful book and so much more. Two thumbs way way up!
I read this as part of #Booked2019 to satisfy my #fairytaleretelling requirement. First, let me say that I am not into fairy tale retellings. I chose this because it was short and well, short. Nice and short. I did enjoy this more than I thought I would and I love the changes to the original story. Also, I listened to the full cast audio, but I‘ve heard the illustrations are beautiful.
How I wake my 12 year old on the really rough days. 🤣🤣🤣🥀
@Cinfhen saved my life with this one. I was dreading #fairytaleretelling for #booked2019. It‘s just not my thing. But this was short and beautifully illustrated. It‘s the retelling of Sleeping Beauty, with Snow White and her dwarves thrown in. I didn‘t love it, but it was well done and brief.
I found it on #hoopla, but I would have preferred it in print. The illustrations didn‘t translate well on my iPad.
Special thanks to @erzascarletbookgasm @ravenlee & @Carolyn11215 for bringing this super short #FairytaleRetelling to my attention for #Booked2019 🌹😴👸🏼🧚♀️👑 I thought the illustrations were magical but the story was not my jam. 5 stars on the artwork but only 2.5 for the writing #SorryNotSorry
Here is my #fairytaleretelling for #booked2019 - it‘s been on my shelf forever and I wish I‘d read it years ago.
Elements of Sleeping Beauty and Snow White, blended into a uniquely Gaiman tale. I loved everything about it, except its brevity.

February 14th is a date I have a hard time looking forward to — not because I don‘t LOVE love (because I do)— but because my grandmother, who loved me with the strongest & best kind of love (even though she *hated* everyone else 😆), passed away on Valentine‘s Day almost three years ago. Thanks, Christina, for providing a (twisted) ray of light in the dark forest.🖤
Amazing illustrations. Bizarre retelling. Snow White meets Sleeping Beauty with Zombies (sleep walking residents of the town). Very quick read...wish it had been longer. 2nd book completed for #mounttbr2019 and #booked2019. @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage
Love this retelling of Sleeping Beauty. This quote Gaiman made regarding the project explains why I wanted to read it. And the illustrations by Chris Riddell are absolutely gorgeous. Check it out if you‘re a fan of either Gaiman or Riddell. You won‘t regret it. 🖤🖤🖤
