Question - my husband is interested in listening to audiobooks at work. This is so not my thing so I don't know anything about them haha He mostly likes to read nonfiction. Any thoughts out there on which of the audiobook options is a good deal/user friendly/more likely to have nonfiction available?

wanderinglynn Any of the audiobook providers have nonfiction. But I recommend using Libby, which allows you to check audiobooks out from the library. After Libby, to purchase audiobooks, I recommend Libro.fm because it supports independent bookstores. He‘s welcome to use my referral code: https://libro.fm/referral?rf_code=lfm99480 (edited) 1mo
DogMomIrene I use the Libby app from my library combined with an Audible subscription. Some libraries allow you to access their digital collections if you‘re in the state, but not that metro area. Others have subscription fees to access digital. Google that one for sure. I know book bloggers have covered it. Audible has a lot of “free” material as well, and it usually covers a variety of genres, incl NF. Get on their email list for sales too. 1mo
Laughterhp You can also see if your library has hoopla. I use Libby and hoopla for audiobooks (both through library) and refuse to pay for audiobooks lol. 1mo
See All 15 Comments
CogsOfEncouragement My library no longer uses Libby, now it uses CloudLibrary which is also great. So just check to see what yours gives you access to. 1mo
JenReadsAlot I can only do NF on audio! I use Libby through my library and Audible. 1mo
AmyG I use Libby and love it. I say try the library first and see how that works. (edited) 1mo
Ruthiella Definitely go the library route first if that‘s an option. There‘s also an unlimited subscription service for a fee through Scribd.com which I used to use and https://www.chirpbooks.com/ has good deals if you prefer to buy. 1mo
ChaoticMissAdventures I agree with others if he is just getting started the library is always the best option. If you don't have access I also use Everand (used to be called Scribd) they are something like $10 a month and have tons of books. Also if you already have Spotify they have some audio - just make sure you don't have shuffle turned on! 1mo
TieDyeDude If he has access to a CD drive at work, you can also check out used book sales at your local libraries. They will usually have audio books on CD for sale as well. 1mo
shortsarahrose Echoing what everyone else has said about checking your local library - mine has Libby, Hoopla, and Cloud Library! 1mo
BarbaraJean Here‘s yet another recommendation for audiobooks on Libby and Hoopla! I find SO many nonfiction audiobooks on Hoopla that I want to read, but audio is NOT my preferred format for NF so they sit in my “favorites” forever 😂 1mo
lauraisntwilder My library doesn't use Libby, but other places I've lived had it and it's great. I use libro.fm a lot now, since my library's selection on Hoopla and CloudLibrary leave a lot to be desired. 1mo
MonicaLoves2Read Check with your local library and see if they offer Libby. I get a lot of my nonfiction audiobooks from Libby. 1mo
Bookwormjillk I agree with others that Libby is a good starting point. I also use Everand and Libro.fm. Both have a good NF selection. 1mo
TheAromaofBooks Thank you all sooo much for your insight and recommendations!!! I'm definitely going to get him hooked up with Libby and see what our library has to offer and go from there. I really appreciate everyone's comments!!

Looking for some good audiobooks for kids. I‘m driving with my almost 15 yo & 9 yo tomorrow from MA to MD. My 9 yo is an advanced reader & loves books. They both loved Percy Jackson & Harry Potter. I don‘t expect that we‘ll listen to entire book (the older one is Autistic & can become easily overstimulated during long car rides). I‘m trying to make sure I have something to pass the time & not listen to the same Taylor Swift songs on repeat.

Cuilin “Peter and the Starcatchers” is also narrated by Jim Dale. Great story. 4mo
AmyG No clue but safe travels! 4mo
Tamra How about this one? 4mo
LiteraryinPA I like James Ponti‘s series about middle schoolers solving art mysteries (the first one is Framed) but I don‘t see it as an audiobook. He has another series that IS on audio that I bet would be good! 4mo

What are some of your top recommendations when it comes to audiobooks? I used to listen to books all the time, but haven't in years. (Just recently occurred to me to do so at work instead of listening to the podcasts I currently listen to.) Anyhow, curious about some tried and true title suggestions. And ... Go! 🚦

Deblovestoread These are 2 books where I think audio really enhanced the story: Mary Jane by Jessica Anya Blau and Unlikely Animals by Annie Hartnett. I also enjoyed Starter Villian by John Scalzi read by Wil Wheaton. Also anything read by Bahni Turpin. 9mo
monkeygirlsmama @Deblovestoread Thanks! I'm screenshotting this so I can refer back to it super easily. I ended up borrowing one from Libby and starting it already so I'll keep these recommendations in mind for later in the week when I finish . 9mo
Deblovestoread I listened to that one as well. Good choice! 9mo

Okay folks, I have some Audible credits and need recommendations for audiobooks. Fantasy, sci-fi, historical, science. Show me what you've got!
(BTW, the fact that Adam West put the headphones on his bat ears instead of his human ears makes me happy 😁)

TheBookgeekFrau Helen & Troy's Epic Road Quest - read this years ago and remember that it made me, literally, laugh out loud 10mo
Ruthiella I think anything Neil Gaiman narrates is pretty good! 10mo
AmyG I used to watch this when I was a kid. The next day in school….Batman was all any of us could talk about. 10mo
See All 7 Comments
AnnR I liked Stuff Matters: Exploring the Marvelous Materials That Shape Our Man-Made World By: Mark Miodownik. For historical fiction, Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier. Also, The Girl With the Pearl Earring by the same author. Finally, I agree with @Ruthiella that anything Neil Gaiman narrates is probably good in the fantasy realm. 10mo
Aimeesue That pic! ? Audio Rex‘s - any Terry Pratchett Discworld, new or older versions, doesn‘t matter; Stephen Fry‘s Mythos séries is very well done; seconding the Gaiman - or go with Good Omens to get a dose of NG & TP together. Murderbot if you‘ve not yet listened to those, any Scalzi, A People‘s History of the United States. 10mo
Ruthiella @Aimeesue True that! I love Discworld books on audio. 👍 10mo
RamsFan1963 History: The Nazi Conspiracy by Brad Meltzer, Science: An Immense World by Ed Yong, Fantasy: The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake, Science-Fiction: The Robots of Gotham by Todd McAulty. 10mo

Thank you, thank you, Helen! This is so nice of you plus you‘re supporting indie bookstores, which I love! I‘m really looking forward to choosing my 2 books! (I actually get 4, since Bindi gave me the same thing! 😆)

squirrelbrain Aw I love that Bindi bought you some audiobooks too! ❤️🐶 1y

Ruthiella Happy Birthday! 🥳🥳🥳 1y

BarbaraBB What a thoughtful gift! Leave it to @squirrelbrain to come up with the best ideas 🤍 1y
squirrelbrain Not my idea @BarbaraBB ! Holly actually sent me a gift this way previously, and now with the demise of BD and all of our rubbish postal systems it‘s probably the best (only?!) way to send gifts. 😁 1y
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain I love the Libro platform because it can be used around the world and it supports independent bookstores. Plus, you can either send someone a credit or credit bundle so they can pick their audiobooks themselves or gift them a specific book. It‘s a great way to go! And low carbon footprint! 1y
BarbaraBB It sounds very good indeed. I don‘t know Libro but I will now check it out! @squirrelbrain 1y

I‘m sharing something I saw on my Audible app when I was looking at the audiobooks they have. They now have audiobooks recorded in spatial audio. I don‘t know if I have the right type of headphones for this. I have AirPods and Beats earbuds but I don‘t know what kind they are because my mom gave them to me. I could use the headphones I have and see if they work out for me or I could buy headphones that are compatible for spatial audio.

The #BOTM moment I know a lot of you have been waiting for... audiobooks! I tend to go the audio route more for memoirs and nonfiction, which they don't have a lot of. So remains to be seen if I'll give it a go? What do you think? Will you try their audiobooks?

Lovesbooks87 I got the email too. I don‘t think I will get audiobooks from them. I use the library and Libro.fm to get my audiobooks. 2y
Hooked_on_books I could potentially rejoin if this happens 2y
JamieArc I‘m tempted. I tend to like thriller/mystery and romance genres for audio, which seems like the perfect fit. BUT I also don‘t like to pay for fast reads and am happy getting them through Libby/library. I don‘t like that we can‘t know the selection until we pay for it, but I get it. 2y
See All 8 Comments
AmyG I use the library, too, for audiobooks. But nice to see them offering those. 2y
Laughterhp Hmm I‘ve actually been reading a lot of the books I get from them on audio from the library and not the print copy.. so this is interesting. I don‘t usually pay for audiobooks. 2y
Megabooks I probably won‘t use their audiobooks. I‘ve got books spread across three paid services already (audible, Libro.fm, and chirp) in addition to the library, so I don‘t really need another audiobook provider, especially when audible is cheaper per credit and the library gets most of their titles that I‘m interested in. So it‘s a no for this audiophile. But I hope more people are willing to try audiobooks who haven‘t yet! 2y
swishandflick @Megabooks Ditto. Now if they offered a freebie on the other hand? (it also seems odd that you have to finish choosing your "regular" box before you can see the audiobooks. Seems like a more holistic view would be preferable?) 2y
marleed Oh interesting. I‘m lucky enough to have access to a library that adds audiobooks to their significant overdrive/Libby library on a weekly basis. I try to take full advantage of this, and in my head subtract $12 from my property tax bill with every audio book checked out. I‘ll save my funds for my physical botm‘s. But I‘m glad this could be an option for many. 2y

I am currently trying to get through some last minute training in preparation for my half marathon in October. I have lost momentum and stamina so clinging on to every km I can run.

Question is, does anyone run listening to audiobooks, or is music the gold standard? My husband listens to podcasts but I'm not sure....

Thoughts/ recommendations?

Bren912 For me (and I have only run half marathons) music is my motivator. But honestly the training is the hardest part, especially if you are training alone so ANY thing that can take your mind off of that is worth it. Also a personal tip from me is: try to have a mantra at certain points in your playlists timed for certain miles of the race. Ozzie Ozbourne was my go to take me to the finish line!! 2y

Audiobook subscription question:
I‘m thinking about getting my BFF a 1 year #audiobook subscription for her birthday…she is a single mom of 2 and in my book club…averages about a book a month. Thoughts on best audiobook subscription service? Is audible the way to go (she does use Prime)? Other services? Looking for ease of use and access to a robust selection of titles. TYIA

sprainedbrain I‘ve used them all, and while I do the vast majority of my audiobooks from the library through Libby, Audible is the best value for the money + selection if you‘re going to use a subscription service. Scribd can be good too, but they don‘t always have what I want. 2y
BookwormAHN I agree I've used most of them too and my favorite is Audible. I also get a lot from the library from Libby and Scribd is good but their selection isn't as vast. 2y
JackOBotts @sprainedbrain & @BookwormAHN - THANK YOU! I appreciate this. 2y
BethM I much prefer scribd bc I consume more than one a month. Yes the selection is different but I think it‘s pretty good actually. 2y

QUESTION: I was just thinking that the audiobooks that I listen to may be affecting my perspective on a novel and it‘s characters. Thinking I should probably read the books I‘m listening to just to see. But then that‘s kind of like watching the movie first. Does anyone else feel this way?
