Walk Two Moons
Walk Two Moons | Sharon Creech
In her own singularly beautiful style, Newbery Medal winner Sharon Creech intricately weaves together two tales, one funny, one bittersweet, to create a heartwarming, compelling, and utterly moving story of love, loss, and the complexity of human emotion.Thirteen-year-old Salamanca Tree Hiddle, proud of her country roots and the "Indian-ness in her blood," travels from Ohio to Idaho with her eccentric grandparents. Along the way, she tells them of the story of Phoebe Winterbottom, who received mysterious messages, who met a "potential lunatic," and whose mother disappeared. As Sal entertains her grandparents with Phoebe's outrageous story, her own story begins to unfold--the story of a thirteen-year-old girl whose only wish is to be reunited with her missing mother.Supports the Common Core State Standards

#BannedBooksWeek

Walk Two Moons is not a book I would have ever thought would be banned or challenged but this past year it has been on the receiving end of a lot of negative attention. It's been challenged and banned in various places due to 'distressing topics for young people' such as childbirth and women screaming in labor. 🙄 *rolls eyes*

Bookwormjillk What? Really??? 2y

I love stories that portray children navigating their way as the adults around them stumble through grown-up problems, and this novel does that skillfully. My son and I read this aloud to one another, and we both enjoyed the layers and layers of stories (except for the romance, which my son says is dumb because the boy is a creep and not a "romantic guy"). Read as part of the Build Your Library homeschool curriculum, level 7.

1. Sometimes seeing an article about a book being recently challenged or removed from curriculum puts it on my radar - in that sense, it does make me more likely to read it.
2. My older sister once made me stop reading L'Engle's A Wind in the Door because she said it was “New Age.“ If I wanted a book I thought my parents would disapprove of, I'd casually hide it in the middle of my library stack. Worked like a charm.
3. Link below.

BarbaraJean The complaint included the statement “we are not sending kids to learn about social justice.“ 🙄 https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/local/williamson/2022/01/25/williamson-cou... 2y

Realistic Fiction Newbery Award winner Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech is a great IR or LC. This book is about a little girls who's mom left and she is trying to reunite with her. On a long journey with her grandparents to see her mother again lots happens and many stories are told. #UCFLAE3414F19

AleciaM This book is another great one for predicting. UDL 6.1 guide appropriate goal setting is great for LC to monitor their reading. ESOL 6 continually monitor students' comprehension is also a good one to make sure they understand what they are reading.

Some great teacher resources.

At @ljuliel 's suggestion:
One of the first (longer) books that really touched me was the tagged book, my 7th-grade reading. Not clear why it did. I had hair down to my waist, like Salamenca, and she also sees the world a little differently. I think it was mainly the theme of not judging others until you know them better
I really want to pick this book up again

“Don‘t judge a Man until you‘ve walked two moons in his moccasins” this RF by Sharon Creech has won a Newbery Medal. This book had many great life lessons and relatable content. Oh, no—I read the wrong book! When I came across/bailed on another of Creech's books last week, I thought I remembered *loving* one of her books that I had read with one of my boys. I searched our book logs, and thought it was Walk Two Moons. Nope. It was Hope Was Here, by Joan Bauer. Back to WTM: I *did* read this with Number One Son many moons ago. I can only assume that I was just as bored with it then, and that I quickly put it out of my mind.

Newbery award winner "Walk Two Moons" by Sharon Creech is an F book that would be perfect for an LC. The story revolves around Salamanca and her family as they take a road trip across the country. As Salamanca tells her family a story to pass the time in the car, truths about her own life start to unravel as well. Sharon Creech was my favorite author growing up and this was one of her best books, in my opionion. #LAE3414sp19

alexandracarpenter Harper Collins, the publisher, provides activities to be done in the classroom here https://www.harpercollins.com/9780060233341/walk-two-moons/ 5y
alexandracarpenter The UDL I would choose for this book is 7.2 - "optimize relevance, value, and authenticity". The main characters are Native American and I feel that having this representation and talking about the characters' culture would be helpful for students who are of a similar background to see themselves in a story. 5y
alexandracarpenter An ESOL strategy for this book could be "use student pairs for team learning...". Pairing students of varying skill levels together to read passages of the book could be helpful in aiding comprehension of student who have less knowledge of the English vocabulary. 5y
