Guards! Guards!: Introduction by Ben Aaronovitch
Guards! Guards!: Introduction by Ben Aaronovitch | Terry Pratchett

The eighth Discworld novel -- After this, dragons will never be the same again! This is where the dragons went. They lie . . . not dead, not asleep, but . . . dormant. And although the space they occupy isn't like normal space, nevertheless they are packed in tightly. They could put you in mind of a can of sardines, if you thought sardines were huge and scaly. And presumably, somewhere, there's a key . . .

Gets better with every reread. It's the first introduction of my fave, Sam Vimes, but you get him more in sketch form, proto-Vimes. The focus is almost more on Carrot's introduction, but to the extent that you're being introduced to all the first members of the Night Watch, it's an ensemble piece, which is quietly tucked around the edges of a dark yet hopeful treatise on human nature. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/2 There are dragons and they\'re great fun, until they\'re elucidating humanity\'s flaws and then it\'s eloquently terrifying. The same can be said for Vetinari. The opening salvo of Sybil and Sam\'s relationship is in here and it\'s adorable and hilarious, not pushing high romance, but rather seeing the two as complex, nearly complete individuals who can benefit from each other\'s company.

Finally reading Pratchett again! Special ordered this edition, because the new German covers are... not nice? Enjoyed ever single page and got me out of a reading slump. I've heard several times that this is one of the best Discworld books, and I agree. I mean, what's not to love? There's the librarian, there's dragons and fights and love. And lots of fun. Since I've read a lot of the later City Watch books, it was nice to see their early years 😄

We‘re I forced to bet, I‘d take my 6 pounder over a dragon any day. She‘d make a nice Errol in a live action.

My 1st time reading this, one of Discworlds best. Pratchett just did everything right here. Humor and charm managed with a well-worked pacing. And scattered little enlightening observations on life.

The Discworld City Watch books reread begins!
I think this one in particular I enjoyed more the second time around. Having stumbled into the Discworld on a later Watch book, encountering Vimes 'early days' was a bit of a let down. But having none month's breathing room, it's just wonderful reading classic Pratchett again, and easier to spot all the pieces of Vimes that make him an enduring character (in both senses of the word), 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? also helpful to start here to get a sense of Nobby and Colon, let alone Carrot. Sybil is a treasure. Errol is a precious flame puppy. The Librarian, and L-Space, my beloved. 1y
Robotswithpersonality 3/? Probably remarked upon previously, but what stuck out on this reading were:
-Succinct take down of the more sketchy/culty religious traditions;
-exactly how sharply critical of humanity's downsides Pratchett can be - the larger dragon is necessarily the second worst foe as a result;
-how efficiently he makes the mind of that larger dragon a terrifying thing to consider, and then upends the threat 👌🏻
1y
Robotswithpersonality 4/4 -exactly how difficult it is to stand up to tyranny when violence is the primary method of suppression, and simultaneously how crucial that makes fighting back anyway.
-How vulnerable, insecure, men can be, without it being toxic, just honest.

And he can still make you laugh! Oh, Terry. 🥹

How about a quote?

“The Patrician didn‘t believe in unnecessary cruelty.*

This is the 1st book in the City Watch subseries. I thought San Vimes was supposed to be the MC but I got more of Carrot & The Patrician.

First book read for #bookspinbingo and it‘s one of my all-time favourite books! A dragon is loose in Ankh-Morpork and Captain Vimes, usually drunk and all-too-aware of how far he has fallen, is not having it. If anyone is going to set fire to his city, it‘s going to be him. It‘s a genuinely funny book and Sir Terry has a lot of fun playing with fantasy tropes but Guards! Guards! is also about integrity and standing up for what you know is right.

In all honesty it was quite good, I enjoyed the characters, Lady Ramkin is lovely, as are the other dragon ladies, Carrot is adorable and entirely unversed in the ways of the world, and Captain Vimes is a man who tries (just occasionally) to be a good person in a world not built for one to do so.
I‘d recommend it. So long as you‘re someone who has slightly better focus than I you might even finish it in a reasonable number of days.

This book is a very funny, sweet escape from real life. It pokes fun at serious fantasy, but it isn't just a parody. It has a great plot that kept me reading! Good for fans of Monty Python but also fantasy fans who have often cringed at some of the more unrealistic tropes of fantasy books and movies.

I finally got my hubby to start reading #Discworld! So far he‘s read the first two City Watch books, the first Witches book & he‘s about halfway through Wyrd Sisters. He‘s enjoying the books so much I decided to start rereading! I‘m not sure yet if I‘ll reread all the Watch books first, or bounce around between the different threads, or maybe reread in the same order as my husband reads them. At any rate, I‘m looking forward to an #epicreread!

KathyWheeler I have put off reading these because I have no idea what order to read them in or where to start. 5y
TK-421 @KathyWheeler I found this reading order guide helpful: http://www.lspace.org/books/reading-order-guides/the-discworld-reading-order-gui.... It doesn‘t include some of the later novels but it‘s a great introduction. I‘d recommend the "starter novels" from any one of the Discworld threads, except Rincewind (continued ?) 5y
TK-421 Pratchett himself said, “I find it now rather embarrassing that people beginning the Discworld series start with The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic, which I don‘t think are some of the best books to start with. This is the author saying this, folks. Do not start at the beginning with Discworld.” I started with the first couple of City Watch & Witches books. 5y

I‘m a bit behind the #OokBOokClub here, but I have to say I can definitely see Pratchett‘s wit and wisdom, the thing that made me fall in love with the later Discworld books, really starting to shine through with this installment. It starts out as a silly story, that quickly takes some unexpected twists, delightfully peppered with some great lines that still ring true today.
