Secondhand Spirits
Secondhand Spirits: A Witchcraft Mystery | Juliet Blackwell
Love the vintage- not the ghosts Lily Ivory feels that she can finally fit in somewhere and conceal her "witchiness" in San Francisco. It's there that she opens her vintage clothing shop, outfitting customers both spiritually and stylistically. Just when things seem normal, a client is murdered and children start disappearing from the Bay Area. Lily has a good idea that some bad phantoms are behind it. Can she keep her identity secret, or will her witchy ways be forced out of the closet as she attempts to stop the phantom?

1. Romance genre is not really my thing.
2. Stay in.
3. Both please! (Frankly I haven‘t gotten either in many years.)
4. Right now I‘d say Lily Ivory and Sailer from the tagged series (once Sailer got his head out of his ass).

This was an easy read with an interesting plot. I love cozy mysteries with magical elements and this book gave me witch craft and folk lore while crafting a fun mystery with just enough twists to keep me guessing.

My brain had a hissy fit this week, so instead of pushing myself at work, I did what needed to be done and then hid with my Kindle. The benefits of working from home...?

As a result, I need to up my book goal for #BFCr4 because I‘ve read all six books that were my original goal. 🤣 My goal now is 16 books — two per week, plus the six I got done in the first week.

(I didn‘t continue the series b/c my library doesn‘t have #6 available right now!)

wanderinglynn Way to go! 🙌🏻 Fantastic goal increase. And such a fun series—if you liked it, I‘d recommend her other cozy mystery series Haunted Home Renovation. The first book in that series is 4mo

Is 59 too old to swing while listening to a book? It was a cool, cloudy day and the park was empty so I had some fun. I resisted the urge to go down the slide - didn't want to chance breaking anything.

I'm enjoying the book and love Xe Sands' narration. It's just the right amount of spooky for me.

I‘m shopping for the #cozyswap tonight. To anyone who may be stalking me... pictured are a few mystery books I‘d love to receive.

Question for anyone who may live in a southern state (TN, GA, SC, NC, AL): with the warmer weather there, do you still often use cozy blankets and scarves? Being from North Dakota, I have no reference for warmer climates and don‘t want to send something that won‘t be useful but found a great idea for the theme 🤷‍♀️❄️

wanderinglynn I grew up in TN & yes, we used blankets & scarves. It snows occasionally in TN. Same for NC, particularly in the mountains. 6mo
Butterfinger Agree with @wanderinglynn It gets really chilly near the NC coast too. 6mo
Megabooks I lived in TN, NC and SC for most of my adult life and definitely used them in fall and winter. I‘m a big believer in gloves, too. And I loved an infinity scarf my boss gave me and would wear it all winter!! 6mo
Megabooks But it was a light scarf - cotton/poly blend, not wool. 6mo
sblbooks Yes to both, we have all four seasons. I'm from NC. 6mo

Just started a witchy mystery with a bewitched pig (do familiars count as bewitched?), found a field of sunflowers and the baby fell right to sleep.

My day is shaping up nicely! 🌻🐽😴

#betwitched #witchyreads #screamathon

Correction: It turns out the pig familiar is really a shapeshifting gargoyle, but I‘m sure something in this book will qualify as bewitched!

Update: And she just alluded to Samantha! ✨

Seekingtardis It‘s a really cute read!! 1y

I‘ve been listening to a lot of cozies lately. This is a new to me series with a little magic and a little mystery. Main character Lily is relatable, but the highlight is Oscar, the snarky gargoyle/potbellied pig that serves as Lily‘s familiar. I enjoyed the paranormal aspects of this book and plan to read further.

4/5 🐙🐙🐙🐙
This was my audio read. I enjoyed the characters and the narrator did a fantastic job on catching the voice for each of them. The story was a little predictable but that‘s what I enjoy in a cozy mystery. Over all I‘m very happy with book and will continue the series! I‘m excited to see how the magic evolves.

callunakeep I felt exactly the same way and intend to continue reading the series as well! This one was a very fun little read! 2y
Seekingtardis @callunakeep I love having fun little reads like these on the back burner for when I need a refresh or when I get into a slump. 2y

I put it off to let the story sink in & then totally forgot to review this!! I LOVED this book. Definitely a cozy mystery at its finest. Lily Ivory is an extremely powerful witch running from her past who finds a safe haven in San Francisco running a secondhand shop that primarily deals with women's vintage fashion. Unfortunately, Lily can run but can't hide from who she truly is. When tragedy befalls two acquaintances - one being a little girl ⬇

vkois88 And Lily must utilize her powers and newfound friends to solve the mystery. This book was great bc I wasn't able to immediately guess the plot right off the bat. Highly recommend it. 5🌟 HUGE thanks again to @Tiffy_Reads for sending it as part of my Cupid Goes Postal swap gift. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for the rest of this series!! 😊 2y
AmberAC Great review, I really love this series. Wish Aunt Cora's closet was real so I could shop there! 2y

vkois88 @AmberAC thank you! I enjoyed this one a lot. I can't wait to see if I can find the others in the series. Also, Aunt Cora's Closet would be amazing to shop at!! @MidnightBookGirl it was! Definitely check it out if you get a chance 😊😊 2y

2) Basically YA
3) Secondhand Spirits, Life After Death, listening to Illuminae but will probably quit... too much going on 😑
4) I don't have a particular favorite. Depends on my mood
5) My parents have two dogs & a cat. Does my daughter count?
6) Who else is super excited about all the swaps???? 😊😊😊

First read of 2018! Starting with a cozy mystery like last year. The theme was kind of serious, it was a bit less cozy than my usual hot chocolate snuggle up in bed reads, but I still liked it. Had to finish fast because I had to know what happened. Thank you again for the great gifts @squirrelbrain 😄😄

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I was not really expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did! The blurb was interesting enough to get me to spend a credit, but I honestly expected to dislike it! Quite the contrary though, I really enjoyed this book, am glad it is the first in a series and look forward to reading the next in line!

A third of the way through this book and I am really struggling with the main character. She keeps claiming she doesn't want anyone to know she's a witch but every five minutes she's lecturing someone on witchcraft or paranormal entities.

drokka There are a lot of contradictions with that character. The author seems to want to make her perfect and calm, but in the third book you find out she has anger management issues. The author tries too hard to make her something that the character could never live up to. 3y

Doing some #audiostitching while listening to this book. Could have used some secondhand spirits overnight when I had lost a needle undoing the petal I'm currently working once I realised I made a mistake at the beginning. I like the narrator's voice, but I'm not fond of the way she does the protagonist's voice when she's conversing with some of the other characters. I have some issues with the MC's interpretation of 'ethical' of magic.

Lily Ivory is a witch with a flair for vintage fashion and spooky situations. This was a fun, quick read that reminded me of the Aurora Teagarden and Harper Connelly mysteries by #CharlaineHarris. Looking forward to the second in the series. #WitchcraftMystery #mystery #paranormal
