Under the Dome
Under the Dome | King, Stephen
Celebrated storyteller Stephen King returns to his roots in this tour de force featuring more than 100 characters--some heroic, some diabolical--and a supernatural element as baffling and chilling as any he's ever conjured. On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mills, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when--or if--it will go away. Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens--town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician's assistant at the hospital, a selectwoman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing--even murder--to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn't just short. It's running out. With some of the most spectacularly sinister characters King has ever imagined and a driving plot, Under the Dome is Stephen King at his epic best. This book will thrill every reader who's ever loved a novel by King.

This book has always felt to me like King took the wanton destruction of Castle Rock and its inhabitants seen in Needful Things and cranked it to 11. While entertaining, this remains a tough read. People you love will die in cruel and senseless fashion, and they will do so throughout. The main and supporting cast are well-written and (mostly) likeable, but that ultimately makes this a very tense read as you dread their possible end. 5/5

I usually don't mind 1000 pages long Stephen King novel but I was really strugaling with the last 100 pages. But it worth it and He is very excellent to write about ordinary people and how easy to manipulate them.

The premise and the plot, and scene setting, are great, but then it gets a bit waylaid and the ending is a bit weak. Also, he seems to have an odd way of writing about women and non-white people.

Erinsuereads This is one of my very favorites. I believe it was the second king I read. I have always thought it has some of the best character writing and absolutely one of the best openings I've ever read. 1y
BarkingMadRead @ErinSueMreads this is definitely a top 10 for me, reminds me a lot of the Stand 1y
Erinsuereads Yes I agree! The narrative pacing and the "dark levels" have the same vibe! 1y
5feet.of.fury @ErinSueMreads I agree. So many different perspectives and individual motivations. Old, young, selfish, nurturing, honest, egomaniacal, Kids, teens, adults, elderly, Horace the Corgi. Everyone gets a chapter. It‘s really impressive. 1y
Karkar I forgot how much blood was at the beginning. I agree with you all - this is one of my favorites 1y
Bklover Still haven‘t finished it but it‘s a reread and I love this one! And I agree completely with @ErinSueMreads ! 1y
Erinsuereads Oh @5feet.of.fury Horace the corgi is legit 🤣🤣🤣 1y
Erinsuereads @karkar yesssss! But it's all so well used! Like it's horrible but man does it set the scene 1y
5feet.of.fury @ErinSueMreads Horace chapters were my favorite! It was really good. I was shocked by how straightforward and easy to follow it was with all the POVs. 1y

Done and ready for #losersclub
Honestly, for 1000+ pages and 100 characters it‘s easy to follow and straight forward plot wise. I watched the show for a bit when it was on, but never got to the resolution (no idea if it follows the book). It‘s quite a whirlwind!

BarkingMadRead The series is a lot different! 1y
5feet.of.fury @BarkingMadRead I remembered some things from the beginning were similar, but then in the show they were underground and something about butterflies and weirder stuff than the book. I couldn‘t remember, I might go back and watch 😂 1y
EvieBee Wow! Congrats! I‘ve tried to read that beast countless times. 1y

🎧📚 I loved this TV show!

The book was a great story & now I want to watch the series again!

An invisible dome comes down on a rural farm town. And typical of King, here comes the most horrible human beings possible!

Great mystery & fun to watch how quickly a town falls apart & the insane take over. So many characters! A bit science-y for King.

Some gruesome bits which make it a good fall read. There are some triggers so beware.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️3/4

MatchlessMarie Omg I had no idea Raul Esparza narrated this. Def need to listen now 😛 1y
Twainy @MatchlessMarie he does! It‘s almost 35 hours. He does a fantastic job! The book itself has some possible trigger warnings if you aren‘t a horror fan. Great book. I really want to find some time to binge the TV series. 😁 1y

Damn, SK… don‘t let up AT ALL on the tension and misery. 😬

I feel like 17 hours of my last four days have been spent in the dome with this poor, abused cast of characters. Just when I thought the situation for the inhabitants of Chester‘s Mill couldn‘t get any more dire, King thought of something worse.

Great writing, some really excellent characters, a story that I could not quit… all the things I‘ve come to expect from this guy.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Reggie Lol I love when he tells you in the very beginning only 30something of these 3000 people will survive and then you spend the rest of the book wondering which ones. Lolol Have you ever read Stinger by Robert McCammon? It‘s just like this. 2y

I think reading about a town suddenly stuck under a mysterious dome was just a little too claustrophobic and 2020 for me because I did not enjoy this one very much. I do appreciate how much research King puts into the details of his books though.

I loved it up until the ending. The ending was disappointing to me. It felt rushed and half baked, like he just got tired of writing and said, “Oh, screw it.” Will I keep reading his books? Absolutely. I wouldn‘t put up with this from any other author, but Stephen King is the exception. I‘ve been reading his books since I was eleven years old, and I doubt I‘ll stop now.

⭐⭐
Let me explain.....
This was my first Stephen King, and I feel like I need to give this book two separate ratings. One for story and one for content.
Story = 4⭐
Content = down to 2⭐
I found it very readable, I liked King's writing style. But. Why the incessant blatant disrespect for Christianity? I get it that some "Christians" are fake, and some are even scum. But this book seemed to take it to an extreme. ? Maybe King is not for me.

jdiehr That would be a turn-off for me, too 2y
kplovesbooks @jdiehr It wasn't that bad at first, but it seemed to get worse as the book went on. I almost quit at one point, after 2/3, but it's a massive 1000+ page book and I had already invested a ton of time into it. 2y
