Handmaid's Tale (Movie Tie-In)
Handmaid's Tale (Movie Tie-In) | Margaret Atwood
The #1 New York Times bestseller and seminal work of speculative fiction from the Booker Prize-winning author, now a Hulu series starring Elizabeth Moss, Samira Wiley, and Joseph Fiennes. Includes a new introduction by Margaret Atwood. Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the days before, when she lived and made love with her husband Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now.... Funny, unexpected, horrifying, and altogether convincing, The Handmaid's Tale is at once scathing satire, dire warning, and literary tour de force.

I‘m so glad The Handmaid‘s Tale was on @LapReader ‘s #NewYearWhoDis list! I‘d always thought I‘d read it in college, but if I had, I‘m sure I‘d have remembered details. Offred‘s story isn‘t easily forgotten.

This story was important when written and remains so. I‘m excited to read The Testaments.

FINALLY read The Handmaid's Tale! 🎉🎉🎉

marleed My first read was only in late summer following the 3-season binge of the series. Next I read the graphic. Then I listened to Claire Danes narrate the audio. How‘s that for a true convert! 2w

Revisiting this old gem. It's so different reflecting on it now versus when I first read it in high school.

marleed I absorbed every version of THT so when I noticed the discs at my library with Claire Daines narrating - I had to go there. The Homeland vibes are so appropriate. I hadn‘t listened to a book on CD in years so it was great to slow it down to one cd through my surround sound a day! 2w

Day 3: Book You Did Not Finish.
.
I started this before the series of #TheHandmaidsTale came out and I could not get past 50 pages or so. I bought a special edition book and I felt that could have been a reason why because I didn‘t want to ruin the cover or pages by reading it.
.
So right after #TheTestaments came out I made sure to have it read but on my #kindle. Absolutely loved it then! 💕 can‘t say the same for The Testaments though 😳🤷🏻‍♀️

First book of 2020!! 😎📚 I had forgotten how dark and SINISTER this is! Somehow the pics of all the Handmaid‘s lined up in a row etc. Among other startling illustrations, really brought home how much was taken from them. Some scenes from the TV show were used as well. I enjoy the occasional graphic novel and paired with Atwood‘s classic story this one was a WIN! 😃

My son got me the graphic novel of The Handmaid‘s Tale for Christmas. I liked it more than I thought I would. It‘s necessarily shorter, but the gist of the story is there, and I liked the art. I went walking in Fairhope and Dauphin Island today. Since we had to drive to get both places, my husband and I also finished Whispers Under Ground; I liked it the second time around too.

So last night the branch of my pub library discussed THT. I was well prepared because since August I binged-watched all 3 seasons of the series, read the graphic novel, and then read the original just in time to read The Testaments along with the audiobook. My lib made this Claire Daines reading available to me. I had to go there. It‘s been years since I‘ve listened to an audiobook via CD and surround sound rather than phone. It was great!

Nute It sounds like you were well prepared. I have read The Handmaid‘s Tale twice. I have not watched the adaptation or read the graphic novel or listened to the audiobook. I‘d like to listen to the audiobook...who is the narrator? Did you enjoy it? I‘ve haven‘t listened to an audiobook before. I think my attention might drift. The Testaments is getting mixed reviews, but I do plan to read it next year. 2mo
Scochrane26 I really enjoyed listening to the audio-Claire Danes is great. I had read the book at least twice & wanted a different format. 2mo
Scochrane26 @Nute I started using audiobooks years ago when I was driving a lot every day & still love them. It took me a few to get used to them, & if my attention wanders, I just rewind a little. Personally, I have a hard time if there‘s a lot of characters, so I often do NF or memoirs. 2mo
See All 9 Comments
marleed @Nute Claire Daines narrates the audiobook as Offred and does an excellent job. It was like Homeland and the THT Hulu series combined! I listened to one CD a day over 9 days and through speakers audible throughout my house. I typically audiobook though earbuds on my phone so the CD experience was fun - I think I‘ll check audiobooks on CD more often now. 2mo
marleed @Scochrane26 Aren‘t audiobook awesome!? I‘m alone often so and I love moving about my day with a story being told to me. Somehow this experience of one deliberate normal-play CD at a time with full speakers was such a treat. I guess I thought CDs were old technology and inconvenient compared to Overdrive, but it was fun. And can we just say, Claire Daines!! 2mo
Scochrane26 @marleed I haven‘t used cd‘s in a year because after a wreck on thanksgiving last year, I got a car w/ no CD player. But, I do have a CD player in my kitchen, maybe I‘ll start checking them out again from library because I like to listen while I cook. 2mo
Nute That might be the way for me to reacquaint myself with THT prior to reading The Testaments.🙂 2mo
marleed @Scochrane26 BTW, I‘m sorry about your wreck. I hope you weren‘t injured. 2mo
Scochrane26 @marleed it was a bad wreck, not my fault, but somehow I wasn‘t injured at all. Thanks for your concern. 2mo

An excellent way to reread a beloved modern classic and a cozy way to spend the afternoon on the first snow day of the season. This was perfect way to re-familiarize myself with the story before reading The Testaments. The artwork is spectacular! The graphic novel is not to be missed. In fact, if you loved The Handmaid's Tale, but have never read a graphic novel, I suggest starting with this one.

Disclaimer : I'm starting out as a big fan of the original Handmaid's Tale. I was curious to see how it would translate to an illustrated title. Pretty well I would say. People who have had trouble reading this story (and it is a difficult story) may want to try this version. It softens some things and heightens others but overall stays true to the original story. The drawings are amazing and the color red plays a staring role. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
