American Fire: Love, Arson, and Life in a Vanishing Land
American Fire: Love, Arson, and Life in a Vanishing Land | Monica Hesse
Recommended Summer reading by TIME, Entertainment Weekly, Real Simple, and Elle. A breathtaking feat of reportage, American Fire combines procedural with love story, redefining American tragedy for our time. The arsons started on a cold November midnight and didnt stop for months. Night after night, the people of Accomack County waited to see which building would burn down next, regarding each other at first with compassion, and later suspicion. Vigilante groups sprang up, patrolling the rural Virginia coast with cameras and camouflage. Volunteer firefighters slept at their stations. The arsonist seemed to target abandoned buildings, but local police were stretched too thin to surveil them all. Accomack was desolatethere were hundreds of abandoned buildings. And by the dozen they were burning. The culprit, and the path that led to these crimes, is a story of twenty-first century America. Washington Post reporter Monica Hesse first drove down to the reeling county to cover a hearing for Charlie Smith, a struggling mechanic who upon his capture had promptly pleaded guilty to sixty-seven counts of arson. But as Charlies confession unspooled, it got deeper and weirder. He wasnt lighting fires alone; his crimes were galvanized by a surprising love story. Over a year of investigating, Hesse uncovered the motives of Charlie and his accomplice, girlfriend Tonya Bundick, a woman of steel-like strength and an inscrutable past. Theirs was a love built on impossibly tight budgets and simple pleasures. They were each others inspiration and escapeuntil they werent. Though its hard to believe today, one hundred years ago Accomack was the richest rural county in the nation. Slowly its been drained of its industryagricultureas well as its wealth and population. In an already remote region, limited employment options offer little in the way of opportunity. A mesmerizing and crucial panorama with nationwide implications, American Fire asks what happens when a community gets left behind. Hesse brings to life the Eastern Shore and its inhabitants, battling a punishing economy and increasingly terrified by a string of fires they could not explain. The result evokes the soul of rural Americaa land half gutted before the fires even began.

I didn‘t know I‘d get regional history as well on this read. Interesting and curious, the author covers these crimes well. At times you cheer on the arsonists, the cops, and everybody between. Not as true crime as some prefer but thoughtful all the same

This true crime story of arson in rural Virginia started out strong. I was quickly brought into the story and wanting the backstory for the people involved.

However, as the story unfolds, I felt the writing became boring and the answers sparse.

It's an easy, quick nonfiction read, but I just personally found it lacking, especially in the courtroom scenes.

Overall, I‘d call this a weak pick. The concept was interesting and I really enjoyed the first 2/3 or so of the story. I just felt the last third or so of the book dragged once the court room stage started. I give the author kudos for the fact that the audiobook only lasted 7.5 hours, but even that felt a bit long with how the last 2.5 hours or so lost momentum.

allureofbeauty I didn‘t super like this one. 2y
JoeMo @allureofbeauty I understand why having read it. The premise itself is interesting, but the rest of the book falters considerably…I think it was a combo of the story petering out and the author‘s format not working. Like, I still wonder why she reveals the guilty parties almost immediately. If she had kept that a mystery for a larger chunk of the book, it with have made things more interesting and suspenseful 2y

What a wild ride…a stretch of over 60 arsons in a small Eastern Shore town…a love story…volunteer fire fighters tirelessly out there night after night.

Glad to have read this for my first #Roll100 pick - definitely off to a great start. 🔥🔥🔥🔥

With my son being a firefighter, it was hard reading a true crime story on arson. Firefighters put their life on the line for such senseless acts but with that being said the book was really good and well written. Thankful for all firefighters and what they do daily!

I enjoy true crime books & this one was no exception. The book develops the case well & incorporates criminal &investigative procedure without being dry. I couldn't help but feel terrible for Charlie. Telling the story of rural decline & how frustration, poverty, & hopelessness can influence deviant behavior. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Finished 1/31/20. I was a bit underwhelmed by this. I found myself more interested in the side of the first responders, firefighters, and police who were trying to solve the case than the perpetrators. While I felt sorry for Charlie for how he became involved in the arsons, there‘s very little insight as to Tonya‘s motivations and in the end she is still somewhat of an enigma and pretty unsympathetic. The audio narration was pretty boring. 2.5 ⭐️

Happy Monday Litsy! Hope everyone had a great weekend. 😁

I've got a new #Top6List this morning, non-violent true crime! One of my biggest surprises when I came to work at the library was the popularity of the true crime genre. These are true crime books for people like me who can't stand all the murder and gore! They follow crimes that are often twisty, dark, and devious, but rarely get anyone killed. Enjoy!

American Fire is a highly engaging true crime narrative. It was refreshing to read about a crime that isn't murder, in this much depth. In this book, Hesse does what I love most in investigative journalism, she does just tell the story of what happened, but locates this crime in a place, a community, and a time, which plays such a significant role in our understanding of how and why these things happen. #readharder2019

This was a great choice for a #BOTMchallenge reread. I fully blame @Cinfhen @Reviewsbylola and @emilyhaldi for my newfound true crime addiction!

C‘mon please Accommack County, #gimmeshelter! So many old, deserted places were burned down by Charlie and Tonya, including the Whispering Pines resort, pictured. It‘s great that no one died, but I really feel for the volunteer firefighters called out night after night during the arson spree. 4⭐️

Above all this book for me was look into vanishing American rural communities. It is depressing. The hopeless situation and the couple portrayed, the arsonists who set fire to more than 60 of the 100s of abandoned houses there. Their personal situation seemed about as depressing and hopeless as that of the county they lived in. And then that Tonya.. such a manupulative woman...
