Everything's Eventual
Everything's Eventual | King, Stephen
he first collection of stories Stephen King has published since Nightmares & Dreamscapes nine years ago, Everything's Eventual includes one O. Henry Prize winner, two other award winners, four stories published by The New Yorker, and "Riding the Bullet," King's original e-book, which attracted over half a million online readers and became the most famous short story of the decade. "Riding the Bullet," published here on paper for the first time, is the story of Alan Parker, who's hitchhiking to see his dying mother but takes the wrong ride, farther than he ever intended. In "Lunch at the Gotham Caf," a sparring couple's contentious lunch turns very, very bloody when the matre d' gets out of sorts. "1408," the audio story in print for the first time, is about a successful writer whose specialty is "Ten Nights in Ten Haunted Graveyards" or "Ten Nights in Ten Haunted Houses," and though Room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel doesn't kill him, he won't be writing about ghosts anymore. And in "That Feeling, You Can Only Say What It Is In French," terror is dj vu at 16,000 feet. Whether writing about encounters with the dead, the near dead, or about the mundane dreads of life, from quitting smoking to yard sales, Stephen King is at the top of his form in the fourteen dark tales assembled in Everything's Eventual. Intense, eerie, and instantly com-pelling, they announce the stunningly fertile imagination of perhaps the greatest storyteller of our time.

An absolutely incredible collection of shorts and novellas. As indisputably great as King's novels are, he really shines in short-form entries. Standouts included Autopsy Room Four, All That You Love Will Be Carried Away, In the Deathroom, The Road Virus Heads North, 1408, and with the conclusion of the Dark Tower on the horizon, Everything's Eventual and The Little Sisters of Eluria were very pleasant warm-ups. 5/5

Uneven collection entertains, but is not up to the usual quality of King‘s writing. Opening body horror story, which should be a strong “bookend” to the collection, is scary but amateurish. A story about the Dillinger Gang bank robbers was good. Audiobook narrators voice their roles well throughout. #audiobook #ok #Scarathlon #TeamWhoYaGonnaCall #horror #spookybook #pumpkinspicereadathon @FlynnDewey

FlynnDewey I love Oliver Platt! I'll have to look this up, if only for his reading. lol 1y

Nice read that allows the reader to enjoy King without making a huge time investment.

RamsFan1963 I still say King's novellas and short stories are better than doorstop books like Under The Dome, 11/22/63 or It. 2y

Did you know that the room that Stephen King based his short story, 1408, is rumored to be based on a room in a Boston hotel?

While on a work trip, I was spookily surprised to learn that fact while I was staying in that very hotel!

Whether or not the rumors are true, this was a wicked cool experience!

Stephen King paperbacks seem to have got a new set of covers yet again. The last lot were pretty grey and grungy and I could never decide if I liked them or not. I do like his short stories, I like the aesthetic of these new covers and I like a book with a lighthouse on the cover #result

Went and spent the week with my sister. Of course no trip to my sister's is complete without a trip to the local used bookstore. I got 2 more to add my King collection. I am down to single digits now!!

BarkingMadRead @Karkar I get that, some of them weren‘t my faves but I had a few faves 3y
bthegood @Karkar agreed - this one was a so-so for me - some were okay, LTs Theory of Pets stood out for me - Stephen King read this to a live audience and his introduction and narration were fun - (edited) 3y

I was disappointed in this one. I only like two or three of the stories. I spent most of the book counting pages until the next story.

I'm not too intrested in his long novels after reading a few, I'm in love with his short stories just like these. The gory details and suspense kept me reading and reading.

Nope. I tried. I love short fiction, and there was one good story at the beginning, but by the middle of the book I was skipping ahead to other stories and hating those too. Most of these were boring and overwritten. “In the Deathroom” was astonishingly racist. There may be stories later in the book that I‘d like, but I can‘t keep wading through stories I hate to get there.

Solid collection from King. The scariest for me was “The Road Virus Heads North” but my favorite is “Riding the Bullet” which made me very emotional.

It's been a minute since I posted here. Life got crazy ( understatement huh?) I hope to get back to regular posting. I have been reading of course :) Right now I'm into another SK short story collection.

Mistermandolin 1408 is my favourite in this one. He gets everything right and in the process shows what a short story can be. The film was good too. 4y
toofondofbooks @Mistermandolin I liked that one too. I think "The Death of Jack Hamilton" was my fave in this collection. The audiobook narrator was really good. 4y

This was my first Stephen King short story collection.

Read it for the 2 #darktower related stories - “Little Sisters of Eluria” and “Everything‘s Eventual” - for my #expandeddt journey but I enjoyed all of them! 🙂

From “1408”

“The Dolphin was on Sixty-first Street, around the corner from Fifth Avenue, small but smart. [In the lobby was a woman whose] light, flowery perfume seemed to summarize New York. On the mezzanine level, someone was playing "Night and Day" in the bar, as if to underline the summary.

It was business as usual at the Hotel Dolphin.”

Continuing my Stephen King high. Library hold came in so Green Mile audio (which I own) is suspended. For some reason this audio edition from Libby only has 5 of the stories 🤔
I own a print hardcover copy with all the stories, courtesy of the local bookmobile, but alas it's in storage 😔
