I‘m just going to call this one, I‘m clearly not that interested in this one. 🤷🏻♀️

My Sunny Boy kept me company while I finished this one 😻. This is the 2nd novel by St. James that I‘ve read and loved, I definitely need to read more of her work. I was hooked from start to finish. It has a little bit of everything: ghostly figures, mysteries to solve, likable/sympathetic characters, action, drama, vivid descriptions, and romance sprinkled in. The MC and supporting characters all had wonderful arcs. I‘m happy with how it ended.
St. James knows how to write a good ghost story without being cheesy or over the top. This a is a good atmospheric story set in a creepy house turned mental hospital that was left abandoned by a family that was never heard or seen from again. Something bad happened in that house and something residual is still there that no one can explain.
Simone St James writes some great books that also make for great audiobooks. This one is set shortly after the end of the First World War and deals with the trauma created during the war. Amongst this there is also a mystery behind what is going on at Portis House. My third book finished for #AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville
Being the big wimp that I am this about taps out my spooky meter. It helped to have a little romance on the side.

I started this for #AuthorAMonth when I was in a different place mentally than I‘ve been in the past few days. And I just didn‘t have the bandwidth anymore for a story about WWI soldiers with PTSD. I still have Ghost 19 I‘d like to read, but this is an “it‘s not you; it‘s me” #bail.
Well, this came in the mail today and I honestly do not remember ordering it. I love Simone St. James, so I‘m sure I must‘ve, I just don‘t remember doing so.
I loved this because it starts with a cliche, the haunted madhouse, & works backwards to get to a story that‘s anything but. This is the only Simone St. James story that I haven‘t found frightening, but it was such a great character novel I didn‘t care, I just wanted to see how the plot evolved. Aside from the lack of creepiness it has all the elements I‘ve come to think of as typical St. James like the quippy dialogue & the post-war love story.
Loving this new cover. My favorite of her historical fiction ghost stories. From St James IG ⬇️

#12Booksof2021 #8thBookof2021 #August I love how Simone St. James mixes mystery with the paranormal, and this one was definitely one of my favorites of hers. The Guncle was a very close 2nd favorite in August. @Andrew65

1- Greatest achievement was getting my shih tzu puppy Luke house trained and mostly able to walk on a leash. Greatest challenge is we are still working on his biting and barking.

Five books from my Kindle with #silence in their title. The tagged book & The Fountains of Silence (both #sundaybuddyread picks) made my Top Reads of 2021 list.
The bottom three books are still in my #TBR. 📚📚📚
I loved this book. This may be my favorite St. James novel. Kitty gets a job as a nurse at Portis House a hospital for soldiers considered crazy. But of course there are complications like the cute patient 16, the fact that Kitty has no idea what she's doing and there are ghosts 💜

@BookishTrish , @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego , @BeeMagical - I'm so excited for LMPBC! What are your thoughts on theme? This time of year I read a lot of spooky/cozy/seasonal (fall/Christmas) themed books but I also like gold old fashioned mysteries, YA Fantasy, lots of stuff!
@kspenmoll - thank you for the wonderful #litsylovefallswap package! The scarf is so soft and cozy and I am so excited to read the books! @rsteve388
This was great. It‘s 1919 England and Kitty Weekes is running away from danger straight into a haunted asylum. This was put in the mail this morning to you @BookwormAHN and should be there by Monday.
@JackOBotts thanks for picking this book. I‘m barely at the part where Kitty does her first night shift. Holy crap, the hairs on my arm stood up. Lolol it‘s my first Simone St. James and it‘s really good so far.

Ghost stories aren't typically my thing, but I did mostly enjoy this book. I liked trying to piece the mystery together, even though I was way off! There were a few loose ends and odd things in the end, though.
Loved this. No surprise, I've never read a book from her that wasn't great. Great #gothic feels, engaging stories (for both timelines), and characters that I cared about, even if they were a little cliched. Read this with #sundaybuddyread
This one was a lot of fun to read with #sundaybuddyread group. It was suspenseful with likable characters and spooky too. Kitty was a strong female lead. This took place in an asylum where Kitty works as a nurse. Of course, she starts to investigate the hauntings and question how the men are being treated by the doctors. A great read. #audiobook #bookhangover
Triggers for child/sexual abuse and suicide.
Thank you Aletheia!!! This was a lovely birthday surprise!!!
Read for #sundaybuddyread for August, I really enjoyed this spooky ghostly book, set in a house turned into an asylum for WWI veterans suffering from PTSD. Kitty is on the run from her past & fakes her way into hiding out there, pretending she is a nurse & finds that bad things are happening at Portis House. I liked the characters, gothic vibe, atmospheric setting & all the twists. It kept me absorbed & is in my top favorites from the author. 👻🖤

Very long week & long day but I did manage to get by the monthly craft market by my house & hit up the dim sum table for my radish cakes & shrimp-chive dumplings & taro puffs. So it‘s a couch blanket dinner 😋 while I read the final chapters of this one for #sundaybuddyread Hopefully I stay awake & can squeeze in some time for Persuasion posts for #PemberLittens #chapteraday too. So much work & life stuff interfering with my book time lately.😬

A very good ghost story with a creepy setting of an isolated mental institution on an island in England in the 1920s. This is probably my favorite of St. James from this time period; 2nd overall from her. She is a must read for me! Looking forward to the final discussion for #sundaybuddyread.
Just after WWI, Kitty is looking for a safe harbor and pretends to be a nurse in order to get a job at a remote house now serving as a mental health hospital for soldiers. After arrival, she is challenged not only by the patients‘ needs but by odd goings-on in the house. This is a well-crafted and paced ghost story with a believable setting. I really liked it. #SundayBuddyRead
By far my favorite of Simone St. James‘s historical mysteries/ghost stories. I loved the setting of post-WWI mental hospital for war veterans, the main character of Kitty (a young woman with a troubled past who has conned her way into a nursing position), the love interest Jack Yates (a conflicted war hero). I thought the resolution to the central mystery worked well, although there was a lack of closure with Kitty‘s family conflict. Spoilers 👇🏼
I really enjoyed Silence for the Dead by Simone St. James. I still have a few questions i wished were answered but for the most part it tied up nicely. Set in WWI at a recovery home for soldiers that were considered unwell after the war. Kitty has come there pretending to be a nurse to escape her past and quickly learns all is not as it seems. There is a little bit of everything in this book mystery, ghosts and even a little romance along the way.
This may be my favorite book by this author that I have read this year. If you enjoy a good ghost story, I definitely recommend this one.
