Maskerade | Terry Pratchett
The Ghost in the bone-white mask who haunts theAnkh-Morpork Opera House was always considered a benign presence -- some would even say lucky -- until he started killing people. The sudden rash of bizarre backstage deaths now threatens to mar the operatic debut of country girl Perdita X. (nee Agnes) Nitt, she of the ample body and ampler voice. Perdita's expected to hide in the chorus and sing arias out loud while a more petitely presentable soprano mouths the notes. But at least it's an escape from scheming Nanny Ogg and old Granny Weatherwax back home, who want her to join their witchy ranks. Once Granny sets her mind on something, however, it's difficult -- and often hazardous -- to dissuade her. And no opera-prowling phantom fiend is going to keep a pair of determined hags down on the farm after they've seen Ankh-Morpork.

Another one of the witches: I actually read The Phantom of the Opera and saw the musical version (the opera not yet) and the Terry Pratchett version is definitely the best one. I was laughing so hard. 🤣🤣🤣

Mehso-so

A rollicking adventure with many humourous bits that has somewhat depreciated thanks to the fatphobic and ableist attitudes prevalent in 1995 that have infused so much of this book. Also old stereotypes: conventionally pretty female must be dumb and/or selectively calculating and shallow, and the not conventionally pretty female must be clever and decent. Pretty light on social commentary or underlying message too. Not my fave Discworld book.

Not my favourite Pratchett, but still a lot more entertaining than the original Phantom of the Opera 😁 Gotta love the Witches - they are so awesome!

Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax, Mother and Crone, are in need of a Maiden to round out their archetype but their best option, Agnes Nitt, is busy getting involved in a murder mystery at the Ankh-Morpork opera house.

What follows is Sir Terry‘s remix of The Phantom of the Opera (more Lloyd Webber than Leroux) & it is a whole lot of fun - although Agnes & her story were quite complicated & I‘m still processing my feelings there.

Hooked_on_books I‘m glad to see this, especially as it‘s accurate. I‘ve spent a lot of my adult life in a mask and am appalled yet unsurprised by the incorrect usage I see now and the large number of contamination events I‘ve witnessed. 4y
BookishMarginalia @Gaylagal2 The masks are more about protecting other people, but if everyone wore them effectively, socially distanced, and washed their hands frequently, we‘d cut down contagion quite a bit. 4y
BookishMarginalia @Hooked_on_books It drives me crazy when people wear or handle gloves and masks wrong! I‘m a nerd, so first thing I did at the beginning of the pandemic was learn how to effectively wash my hands (then how to wear homemade masks). 4y

The witches are still my favorite & they get better with every installment. I really loved seeing our favorite witches visit the big city. Nanny apparently wrote a sizzler & Agnes has joined the Opera, but you see there is this mysterious Ghost at the Opera who seems to want the show to go on better than ever & seems to be mysteriously around as people begin turning up dead. I loved this delightful play on The Phantom of the Opera, Discworld-side.

khooliha I didn't have the strongest memories of this book, but I ended up loving it! I think it's interesting that the witches have to grapple with storytelling conventions so often - fairytales in Witches Abroad, theater (sort of) in Wyrd Sisters and Lords and Ladies, and now opera. Stories are both a thing to see through the fakery of and to understand and utilize. 4y
khooliha I was also worried about the fat jokes but I'm glad they dropped off. Salzella's cruel comment being the capper seems important, based off of his role in the book. Also, while it could be seen as a crappy joke, I think the ending sidesteps the obvious "fat lady sings" set up. I love that Agnes -screams- instead of sings, raging against the unfairness of the opera/life, shaking it with her power. 4y
Soubhiville I really liked this one. I read it quite a while ago, so details aren‘t very clear, but I know I laughed a lot. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I really love the witches and adored this spin on Phantom of the Opera. Although the end could have used a twist for me. I felt like the real Walter should have understood and been there for the real Agnes...but that‘s just me. 4y
amber_ldsmom Loved this one! Most definitely one of my favorites! @khooliha love your insights. 😁 4y
khooliha @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I feel like Walter's response maybe plays into the reality vs storytelling aspect of the witch stories? Agnes should get to succeed, but the story conventions that shape opera won't let her. But also it has to happen to force Agnes to become a witch, unfortunately. Ultimately I'm with Agnes - I liked Walter better when he was nice. 4y
khooliha @amber_ldsmom Thanks! I keep ending up with a lot of feelings/thoughts about these books. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @khooliha I know, Agnes had to be a witch in the end....and there was even reality vs. opera for Mr Slugg....but somehow the ending just rubbed me a bit wrong, Mr Slugg could be famous & huge, Agnes not so much, Walter was nicer before, & Greebo got picked up walking home, but Agnes had to walk back in the rain & then they commented on how she‘s lost weight on the journey. So I loved it, but you‘re right the “fat” jokes got a bit tiresome at times 4y
khooliha @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I -hated- Agnes's weight getting commented on in that last page or two. It's a real blight on an ending that otherwise was really good. 4y
khooliha @Riveted_Reader_Melissa And the differences with how Slugg and Agnes are treated is very frustrating, even if I think it was done on purpose. Still sucks! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @khooliha agreed! I loved that she screamed instead of sang at the end, but I wish her weight hadn‘t come up in the last few pages either. 🤷‍♀️ 4y
khooliha @Riveted_Reader_Melissa The scream was such a strong capper - it should have ended the issue. 4y

It strike me as odd that no one has had the idea that there's more than one ghost, what with 2 vastly different patterns of behavior. (I don't actually remember the solution to this mystery, so this may not be a spoiler at all!)

I do enjoy this one. Quite possibly my favorite with the Witches. Probably helps that I know a young lady who loves and is very good at singing, and is also quite a large person with great hair. I just mentally plug her into Agnes/Perdita's place in the story and can visualize it all perfectly.

The Discworld witches take on the opera. Complete with a ghost, Greebo, a couple of the Night Watchmen, The Librarian, and of course Death.

This was my first reading of Maskerade, and I giggled a good deal of the way through it!

There's something so comforting about reading Sir Terry and the Discworld books. I've been in a reading and emotional slump and this one helped a lot. We are moving and I'm kinda nervous.
