Number 9: Can you guess how old I am based on these last two books? Clearly loving the nostalgic/VHS theme. 📼
Grady Hendrix is an author I will read anything from. No notes, perfect book. Big fan of the movie adaptation too.

This is my first read by Grady Hendrix, and he lives up to the hype! This is such a beautiful portrayal of a friendship; the simplicity of the intro, the confusion, betrayal, and determination of the plot, and the heartache of the conclusion. And between all that is a really effective possession story just oozing '80s vibes.

‘Is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil.‘
Referred to as an unholy hybrid of Beaches and The Exorcist. Love how this reads like an ‘80s horror flick and includes a lot of ‘80s pop culture and songs in the story. Creepy at times and definitely some cringe moments.

I knocked 7.5 off my list in September! I have my eyes set on six for October, but they are all prose. I usually have a few graphic novels in the mix, so we'll see how it goes 😁
This will always be one of my favorites. The 80s nostalgia is strong with this one. I can't say enough about how much I love it.
This was a really solid and fun read. My only criticism is how the exorcism itself kind of... fizzled out towards the end?? and we sort of cut away from it which was disappointing and didn't feel very thought out. Aside from that it was overall a very good book, would definitely recommend it to fans of 80s horror movies, especially the B ones.

My July bingo board. My bookspin titles are My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix and Marvel Punisher Soviet. There is a fairly good chance I could get my first bingo with the top row!
Set in the late 80s, the nostalgia factor is high - complete with a Spotify playlist of amazing songs and enough pop culture references to satisfy anyone familiar with that decade. It has its fun moments but turns dark pretty fast. Abby discovers that her best friend is possessed and is determined to save her, but is their friendship strong enough to save Gretchen‘s soul? Not too, too scary, but definitely creepy, freaky, and gross at times.

“Fast Car“ by Tracy Chapman
“The One I Love“ by REM
“Hallelujah“ by Leonard Cohen
“Stop Draggin' My Heart Around“ by Stevie Nicks & Tom Petty
“Push It“ by Salt-N-Pepa
Listen, math isn't my strong suit.
Also, I was reminded recently (by Rob Harvilla) that “Push It“ had a choreographed dance routine that went with it. I found a tutorial and my mind is BLOWN. In the words of S&P, “Let's Talk About“...a recovered memory!
Emily Woo Zeller voice changed with the characters and she used variations of speed to put terror in her words in all the appropriate places! The writing was also excellent, I grew to love the characters, even the not so nice ones because they all had so much depth. It was written with the innocence of their youth so balanced and writing their emotional turmoil with that young innocence in mind that rang so true to me. Great book!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A weirdly relatable, kitschy horror story. Abby and Gretchen, etc remind me so much of my friends only we are the slightly younger TLC-Chasing-Waterfalls-era. But the 80s references still hit. Some scenes were legit gross, but overall, it was less scary than expected. I‘m glad to have given Hendrix another go after not enjoying Final Girls Support Group. Curious to hear what my #bookclub thinks. This was *my* spooky October pick!
Never got around to watching this last Halloween but now I‘ve remedied that! Thought it was good but I think there were some differences from the book…read it in 2017 so my memory is fuzzy on the details. Loved the music!

This was fun- a novel of friendship set nicely in the 80s wherein one friend gets possessed by a demon and only her best friend realizes what‘s happening and tries to save her. I mostly listened to the audio, but had to finish with print because I‘m too impatient! The print book is designed like a yearbook too - perfect! #scarathlon #spookyghostclub also 2 bingo lines for #bookspinbingo ! +61pts
I have held on to this book for an entire year in order to have it for #Scarathlon . I laughed, I read parts outloud to my husband, and loved the nostalgia. #31in31 total is 5:40:23 #TeamCryptKeepers @LiseWorks
This was good. There were moments that annoyed me and got to be a bit old and tired. Did it live up to its hype? For me no it didn‘t, still worth the read though.
The writing was good. The story was different in a good way. I would have liked less obscure 80s references. The characters needed some more depth throughout the whole book not just at the end.
3.8⭐️ if you want horror without too much Horror.
If you love 80's horror & the nostalgia of a Gen X childhood then this book is a no-brainer. The characters will remind you of someone from high school, the scenes are horrifically groas & man the sound track would be killer. Personally love how every chapter is a song title
This book is a love letter to 80's Horror
Another day, another spot, another book
I still love Grady Hendrix. I still really enjoyed My Best Friend‘s Exorcism… except that one bit. I can‘t get past that one bit. If horror books are supposed to give you nightmares, he did his job a bit too well. Full review (with trigger warnings): https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/my-best-friends-exorcism-grady-hendrix/
I enjoyed the story and characters. My favorite thing is that it is set in the 80‘s and took me back to my childhood. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Abby‘s quest to save Gretchen is filled with unsettling and creepy imagery. My Best Friend's Exorcism is perfect for those who enjoy 80s horror. And while there may have been moments that interrupted the story pacing, once it got back on track it really took off. If you're a reader who enjoys possession based horror, this is the story for you.

Loved the nostalgic horror of the 80's. Brought back a lot of memories. Perfect summer read.
Spending this gorgeous afternoon reading on the front porch. This is my first Grady Hendrix. I've heard such good things about him and just fell in love with this cover.
Fantastic. And a little hilarious. Captures the attitude of late 80‘s perfectly.

Grady Hendrix really knows how to keep your attention
(2016) That was fun!
Trying to finish this one up, but I just can‘t with the mean girl stuff tonight.

Found out my work friend, who recently invited me to join her IRL bookclub, has been trashing me behind my back. So I lost a friend, a bookclub, and possibly a promotion.
I‘m less than two weeks away from my 40th birthday, which is entirely too forking old for this bullshirt.
Oh, man. I really liked this one. Great story that I couldn‘t put down, and such a wholesome friendship.
Vampires and demons…if I needed a sign to replace Valentine‘s Day with a second Halloween, well, here it is.

Grady Hendrix writes fun books! This story takes place in the 80s and is about 2 best friends in high school. One night during a party, one of the friends goes missing for a few hours. When she reappears, she is not the same.
I could not put down this book.
VERY DISAPPOINTED! ☹️
I LOVED the book but they butchered the book! Bad acting, bad production, rushed, no character development whatsoever. Soooooo bad!
Who else read & watched?
Any thoughts?
Agree or not?
Who else has seen the movie?
I‘d recommend NOT. It was awful.
I‘m SO out of the loop!!! They made a movie???! I had no idea!!
It's the worst cover ever, but it's finally mine 🤩
Thank you @Rachel.Rencher for #BookishCoupleGiveaway for the opportunity to win! My favorite genres are horror and thrillers.
My spooky watching for today! 3 movies, 2 episodes of the tv show version of I Know What You Did Last Summer, and 2 spooky episodes of The Simpsons. I‘ll add up all my #scarathlon2022 points tomorrow. Until then…Happy Halloween everyone! #teamslaughter
I liked this one. It was fun and creepy.
This was SO GOOD!! I honestly love just about anything set in the 80s and add in some teenage angst and horror and I‘m sold! I wasn‘t really expecting this to be as funny and touching as it was at times. The ending was especially surprising and made this so much more than a standard horror novel. I‘m watching the movie tonight to compare! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 #teamslaughter #scarathlon2022
This reads more like satire to me than horror. But this author has snarky undertones so 🤷.
#AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville
When I added “Halloween themed workout” to my #fallbucketlist for the #scarathlon, I was pretty sure I‘d be able to find something online with a bit of a spooky playlist, maybe some thriller, some orange sweat pants, a pumpkin shirt if I was real lucky….but at no point did I imagine finding this hilarious commitment to the bit from LVCRFT (also a new epic find all on its own) and HyperBody Fitness

While this wasn‘t quite as big of a hit with me as my only other Grady Hendrix to date (Southern Book Club‘s Guide), I still enjoyed it! Loved every bit of the 80s nostalgia and campier elements. (How Phil Collins was referenced/invoked brought me great joy. 🤣) At times I found the pacing a little off, but it really might have been a me-not-the-book situation. I‘m interested in reading more of his books for sure. #AAM #AuthorAMonth
Working on an order and starting a new book in the 12 minutes I'll have to myself today lol
