Cocaine Blues - TV tie-in | Kerry Greenwood

"Phryne can not get enough of adventure and the reader can not get enough of Phryne." Deadly Pleasures The London season is in full fling at the end of the 1920s, but the Honourable Phryne Fishershe of the green-gray eyes, diamant garters, and outfits that should not be sprung suddenly on those of nervous dispositionsis rapidly tiring of the tedium of arranging flowers, making polite conversations with retired colonels, and dancing with weak-chinned men. Instead, Phryne decides it might be rather amusing to try her hand at being a lady detective in Melbourne, Australia. Almost immediately from the time she books into the Windsor Hotel, Phryne is embroiled in mystery: poisoned wives, cocaine smuggling rings, corrupt cops, and communismnot to mention erotic encounters with the beautiful Russian dancer, Sasha de Lisseuntil her adventure reaches its steamy end in the Turkish baths of Little Lonsdale Street.

Phryne is a savvy woman who knows how to solve problems. Though this took me awhile to get into, once I got into the rhythm of the narrative, I was hooked. I‘ll definitely continue the series, and it really, really makes me want to wish the Miss Fisher series! #WhoDunItTheSequel

I am rather enjoying the Phryne Fisher books. Accidentally stumbled on the second, so thought I‘d better start from the beginning. This is an excellent yarn involving a drugs ring, a poisoning and a botched backstreet abortion. Slightly fantastical - Phryne is just too amazing to be considered in anyway realistic, but then so is James Bond and he‘s been getting away with it for decades. Believable or not, I do rather like Phryne!

Crazeedi Yep! I love Phryne! She's so independent and outrageous and nonconforming!! ❤ 3mo

I‘m a BIG fan of Miss Fisher‘s Murder Mysteries and have been going through a major withdrawal awaiting the film to conclude the series so I figured I‘d give the books a shot. I love the descriptions of the clothing and little details that build the atmosphere of Australia in the 20‘s. Phryne is a force to be reckoned with, as all who meet her soon learn, and her head for adventure and can do spirit puts her in precarious but exciting situations.

I did not expect such a strong female character in a setting in the 20s. But I really liked it. Sometimes I even asked myself, if it‘s not a bit over the top. But I will definitely read the second book. Yay new series!

1. Like @tournevis I have a lot of them but here's one that is sure to scandalise many people - I think the Phryne Fisher books are very poorly written

I‘ve seen the tv show and decided to give this series a try. It was a fun introduction to phryne, tho despite its short length I lost the thread at times. Phryne goes to Melbourne on a private investigative mission and ends up in the midst of a cocaine ring trying to find the king of snow. Loved the fun outfits and strong female characters. Good palate cleanser but writing was a bit cluttered. Cocaine = snow = #snowball #winterwonderland

Blaire I‘m a day early on the prompt but I just finished the book so going with it. 11mo

TrishB Good pick 👍🏻 11mo
Blaire @Cinfhen thought I‘d like it more. I could see reading another when in a reading slump. Fun but didn‘t wow me. 11mo
CarolynM @Blaire @Cinfhen This is the first in the series and I read it way back when. I thought the writing was pretty terrible but I was sufficiently impressed by the Phrynne character to try the next one when it came out and I've gone on reading them. The writing definitely got less clunky (I've always suspected she got a better editor) but it's never been good IMO. I'm always a bit surprised by how much people like them. Sorry to all the fans😬 11mo
Reviewsbylola I read this for the cozy mystery prompt for #booked2018 earlier this year and really liked it. But only because I think cozy mysteries sucks and this is way better than those. 😂 I did end up buying the second book so maybe I‘ll eventually get to it but it‘s not calling to me. 11mo
Crazeedi I liked this series, some more than others. 11mo
batsy Well played 🙂 11mo
Blaire @CarolynM yes, I gave it some leeway b/c it was the first in the series and so much had to be established but it felt like so much was just thrown out there. Also I found the B plot with the abortionist really interesting but it didn‘t relate back to anything else. Good to know writing gets less clunky is probably give it another go or just watch the tv show. ☺️ 11mo
Blaire @Reviewsbylola I like mysteries in general...the only cozy mysteries I really read are Louise penny and I love those! This was fun and had some interesting plot and characters...but the writing itself didn‘t really work for me. I think mainly an editing issue. 11mo
Blaire @Crazeedi yes, the first in a series is hard to judge. I may read more but not feeling particularly drawn to them. 11mo
Blaire @batsy thanks! 11mo

This was my first Phryne book. I love the TV show and was a bit concerned that I wouldn't like the books. At first, I had to adjust because the characters are a bit different. Also, I am not a fashion fan, I'm not very interested in reading sentence after sentence about Phryne's wardrobe. But in the end it was fun and I will probably read the next book too. I haven't met Mr Butler yet!

CarolynM Essie Davies is fabulous. I still have very clear memories of her on stage as Juliet in the early 90's. For me the Phryne Fisher series is a rare example of the filmed version out shining the books. 1y
jillrhudy Great TV series, and I‘d be reading this with you if we‘d had it in the library. 1y
Aimeesue @jillrhudy That's what spurred me to check and see if either of my libraries had it. (Aside: "Why is it check and see? Why not just "check?" Does Joe McWhorter cover this? And will i need to get out my Latin dictionary?) 1y
janeycanuck I read the first book, didn‘t like it. Watched the series, loved it. Debating on whether or not to pick the books up again... 1y
jillrhudy @Aimeesue He did cover something like it. I can‘t quite remember what. Maybe “check” got boring and we needed “and see.” In the mountains we never just “check” anything. We don‘t even “check and see.” We “GO check and see.” Just in case someone doesn‘t know that “check” does not imply “I will investigate something which is out of my current line of sight.” 1y
Aimeesue @jillrhudy Pretty sure that "go" came from child- rearing. We all know that a child will not get up to look for something if they are not specifically ordered to do so. ? 1y

I really wanted to like this book. There were times I found myself laughing out loud and getting caught up in the ridiculousness of the situations Phryne found herself in. But, in the end, the story was too slow (especially for such a short book), the plot was too thin, and I didn‘t really care about the mystery.

Christy2318 If you haven‘t watched Miss Fisher‘s Murder Mysteries, give it a try. The show is fantastic and much better than the books. 2y
Kmmsellers @Christy2318 I will definitely do that! I‘ve been wanting I watch the series. 2y

I‘m in such a reading slump right now. It‘s finals week, and after a long day of grading, I want to read. But nothing is holding my attention.

I‘ve heard so many good things about this series, so I picked up the first one from the library and started reading this afternoon. I am in love with this cover! And the story is good so far.

It was quite a good reading month for me so I thought I‘d share my month!

6 books total. 5 physical books, 1 audiobook.

Favourites:
Cocaine Blues
Murder On The Ballarat Train
The Martian (reread)

Currently reading:
Inferno - Dante Alighieri
Mindhunter - John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker

I think Litsy is helping me through my reading slump, I look forward to sharing books here and reading peoples posts and it motivates me to read 😁

LoverofLit I really enjoyed The Martian! Very smart and surprisingly humorous 😳 2y

Just finished my second reread of this for #whodunitthesequel. Interestingly, I like it more each time I read it! (I actually didn't like it that much the first time I read it but then started watching and enjoying the tv series, and gave it another try. Definitely not the usual sequence of events for me, since I almost always prefer the book - of course 😜)

It's short, so I expect I enjoy it more on a reread because I know the character more.

dsfisher Love the series! And the books. 2y

I loved this book. The writing is sharp and witty, and I just love Phryne, and secretly wish I could be more like her. Or maybe that‘s because Essie Davis is so fabulous in the TV series (and the clothes!!) Either way I‘m very glad that I have the next two books in this series so I don‘t have to wait to read the next one!

xicanti I desperately want TV-Phryne's wardrobe. 2y
larah17 @xicanti I know, right? Absolutely gorgeous. 2y
TNbookworm I love Phryne's clothes too and such a good TV show. I need to read the books! 2y

1). Kerry Greenwood‘s Phryne Fisher and Corina Chapman series‘ respectively, Conan Doyle‘s Sherlock Holmes.
2). My spaghetti/ French Fries / squishy white bread with ham & brilliantly ripe avocado if I‘m at home & can get all constituent parts.
3). The BBC‘s Gardener‘s World. Feast for the eyes, balm for the soul.

JenlovesJT47 Phryne!! My favorite book character of all time. I‘m slowly rereading the series, listening to it on audiobook this time. The narrator is phenomenal and really captures Phryne so well. 💚 2y
CoffeeK8 My mom was just telling me about Gardener‘s world... she says it‘s amazing! 2y
GlassAsDiamonds @JenlovesJT47 ooohh... I‘ve never tried the audiobooks. 😊😊😊 2y
GlassAsDiamonds @CoffeeK8 you must! It‘s just stunning 😊😊😊 (and most episodes are on YouTube if you don‘t have the BBC). 😊 2y

JenlovesJT47 Yay! I hope you like it! 💚 2y
ScientistSam @JenlovesJT47 It's actually a reread for me, so I know I'll enjoy it. I have to say I love the TV series more, though. Have you seen it? It's fabulous! 2y
JenlovesJT47 Yes!! I love the show! It's what got me started reading the books. I've read the whole series and am currently working my way through again via audiobook. The narrator is amazing and has gotten Phryne's voice down perfectly! 2y

I really enjoyed this Phryne Fisher mystery! I have seen the first season or two of the tv show so I was already familiar with the characters. It started out a little slowly but picked up and delivered a good mystery and a fun ride! Now I‘m ready to read the next #whodunitbymail book!

Reviewsbylola I really enjoyed this! 2y
BookishBelle @Reviewsbylola Me too! I‘m reading the second in the series now. Have you read more in the series? 2y
Reviewsbylola I bought it when I finished this one but I haven‘t read it yet. 2y
BookishBelle @Reviewsbylola I‘m about 50 pages in. It‘s just as good so far! 2y
