Curious George | H. A. Rey, Margret Rey
48 posts | 111 read | 1 to read
In this, the original book about the curious monkey, George is taken from the jungle by the man in the yellow hat to live in a new home, but--oh, what happened! Though trying to be good, George is still very curious and takes a swim in the ocean, escapes from jail, and goes for a flying ride on a bunch of balloons. Thistreasured classic is where it all began for the curious, loveable monkey and is a must have for any children's book collection.

Watching one of youngest kid‘s favorite Halloween specials when he was younger - George‘s Halloween Boo Fest. This used to be on a loop all day every day in October. I love the tell of No-Nuggin who kicks of people‘s hats. This morning he asked for it when we say it on Huluween Family section. 6 more pts for #teamharkness #scarathlon2020 @StayCurious running total 159

This book is a classic, of course, yet I was uncomfortable reading it with my son for obvious reasons... Times have changed since the 1940s and 60s... My, my, George!

This book is about a little money who likes to get into situations caused by curiosity. The illustrations are important, because they show characteristics of George and the man with the yellow hat for children to see.

A fantastic study of the effect of Stockholm Syndrome on African wild life. Perfectly worded, so that even the youngest aspiring psychologist has full clinical understanding of the trauma that precedes the condition.

I know this is a classic, so I really wanted to like it. But, as a 20th century adult, I just can‘t get past the fact that George is stolen from his home just because the man with the yellow hat wants to. I understand this was written in a different time and I heard the newer stories are more “with the times”, but still I probably won‘t be reading this first installment to my future kids.

Lady_Tigana_20 We bought a book with original Curious George stories from online thrift store. Ran into same problem. My son loves the cartoon, but the original story had a distasteful origin story, and each story is so long that it could really be three or four separate stories. Just endless. My husband and I kept looking at each other like: When is this story going to be over? 5y
nelehelen @Lady_Tigana_20 i get that it was written a long time ago, but it didn‘t stand up well in today‘s society. I‘m sure it brings lots of joy to other people and children, but just not for me! 5y

My district requires that I have the following displayed in my room every day:
1. The date
2. The day's agenda
3. The content area standard being taught
4. The college and career readiness standard being covered.
5. Objectives
6. I can statement (geez I teach high school not elementary)
7. Before, during and after strategies
8. Activities
9. Homework
What requirements do you have?

Sace I'm running out of room on my board. 😑 7y
julesG Your new litsy handle made me stop. I honestly had to stop. That's quite a lot to be put onto your board(s). 7y
Sace @julesG I wish I could remember which Litten inspired my name change. 7y
See All 21 Comments
Roselyn_Reads Your name change is awesome!! 7y
Bambolina_81 I teach Secondary in the UK and we had to have similar in my last school. With objectives and steps to success for every lesson 😒 7y
CoffeeK8 Hmm I do pullout/push in services so my requirements are different, I think the classroom teacher require all of those except before/during/after 7y
kendrastephaniekaryn I don't really have any of these requirements, but I display the daily/long term objectives and homework as a management strategy! 7y
AndreaReads I do put up most of those things on my board. I do a daily agenda through PowerPoint that I keep up through the majority of the class period. I also require my students to write that info down in their agendas so they can refer back in case I need to change the slide for notes or something. 7y
EmilyM It is "suggested" that we put on the board "Today I Will....So I Can....I Know I will Have it When...." statements for our classes. 7y
Sace @Bambolina_81 @CoffeeK8 @kendrastephaniekaryn @AndreaReads @EmilyM I guess I'm annoyed by how long it's going to take me to write all this down on the board every morning. And usually all the students want to know is what they are doing for a grade and if there's homework. 😑 7y
AndreaReads I think you have every reason to be annoyed. That is an awful lot to write on a board every single day/class period! And when you have more than one prep....🙄 7y
EmilyM @RestlessFickleBookSlut Agreed--Kids just want to know what is for homework! 7y
Sace @AndreaReads and my last observation was literally someone coming to my door and checking to see if those things were there. They had a clipboard and checklist and they were gone after 5 minutes. I got an email later because I had the wrong date up. Whoops! There I was teaching my heart out and that's the feedback I got. 😑 7y
AndreaReads 😡 And there's your problem with education. Educators are not trusted to be educators. 7y
Purrfectpages We have basically the same requirements, but I teach third grade. I also have a tiny room so it's always fun trying to accommodate all their requests. None of it makes any difference to the kids, btw. 7y
Sace @AndreaReads PREACH! 7y
Sace @Purrfectpages nope. Kids don't care. The standards I have posted were written for me. They are not kid friendly at all (even for high schoolers) and like @AndreaReads said, I feel like they don't trust me. Most are things I've always had up. I just resent that they tell us we all have to have it the same. Even our lesson plans have to all be written the same way with the same template. 😑 7y
Purrfectpages Yea, it really is sad how cookie cutter they've tried to make education these past few year And yielding the same results, you think that would tell them something. God forbid they trust our instincts as educators. 7y
ninergrl6 I teach at a private high school so we don't necessarily have to follow state regulations. We're supposed to write the student objectives on the board, but I just write the daily agenda. What irks me is everything we have to post online. The homework is listed on at least 2 different sites plus written on the board & stated verbally, but the kids still don't do it nor do the parents know what their kids are supposed to be doing 🙄 7y
JackieSmith Does it all have to be on your board? For example , you could have a little flip chart & just flip to the standards? Reading & Writing 10 fit any lesson. Or simply leave up the same standards for a couple weeks, now that you know it's about having it on the board & not what you're actually teaching. I'm sorry, I know from experience this is super frustrating! 7y
Sace @JackieSmith I've pretty much got 11 standards. 4 of which we cover a million times in one class session. So I just put those four up and I plan to keep them up all year. Lol 7y

The mischievous monkey who had a canny way of getting in and out of trouble originated in the minds of Hans Augusto and Margret Rey. They conceived of the character while themselves trying to outrun the Nazis, finally escaping from France on homemade bicycles and carrying the manuscript with the first mention of George (then called “Zozo”) along with them. #refugees #junebookbugs

Library story: A really young kid finally worked up the courage to ask if we had a picture book he wanted. This led to the life-changing discovery that if he asked for a book, I would walk over to the picture books and show him where it was! He went mad with power, confidently asked me to find more books, and ended up with an armful before his mom convinced him that they could come back later to get the rest 😂
He was adorable and made my day 😁

Let's be perfectly clear, and end all the lies. I don't care how many times The Man In The Yellow Hat calls George a mischievous little monkey -- George has no tail and is therefore clearly an ape, not a monkey.
