Yet another book that sits teetering on the edge of a "Pick". Beautifully written and heartbreaking - this feels rife for a TV miniseries (fans of "Fargo" take note!).
I'm giving this a "So-so" because I felt it had pacing issues, and could probably have been trimmed by 10-20% for a more potent story. Definitely not a book for those who like clear, happy endings.

I like this cover with rings from a tree. It fits with the camping and wild living lifestyle of one of the book‘s families.
A social worker with just as many issues as his clients tries to help several children get out of unhealthy living situations, while he searches for his own missing daughter. I thought this was going to be a thriller, but it‘s definitely more family drama. It‘s dark with references to drugs and alcohol, abuse, prostitution, and extreme poverty.

Been on my kindle 4 years, still not read.
Starting this chunkster today - I have high hopes for this one... fingers crossed.
The story of a social worker in rural Montana in 1980, and the family of survivalists he finds living in the wilderness. He tries to help--while his own life is falling apart. This book is about paranoia, freedom, institutional limitations, forgiveness and finding the fortitude inside you to go on after you‘ve experienced tragedy. It is not an easy read. But it‘s compelling and breathtaking and the writing is stunning.
Day 22: #adventrecommends
Super dark story about a social worker who gets wrapped up in the dark paths of some of the people he is trying to help. It shows how his dedication to his job winds up effecting his personal life and the lives around him inadvertently. A little slow in parts, but very hard to put down.
I have rather mixed feelings on this one... it‘s beautifully written highlighting the West in the 1980s. But it‘s a bleak storyline- and the feral child reference isn‘t very accurate, though there is plenty of the abuse and hardship you would expect from a DCFS worker as the MC. It drags a bit and doesn‘t end as satisfyingly as I had hoped.... #Montana
Happy 4th of July, Littens! Hope you get to squeeze in some reading time today! #independence #readingresolutions
I found a Dollar General today and went in to check their books. I might‘ve forgotten my book buying ban. 🤦🏼♀️ I‘m excited that I found these though.
My book buying ban did not go so well.
From my TBR #NovemberByTheNumbers who‘s read it?!?! Thoughts?!? #4
A #blameitonlitsy addition to my TBR. It comes highly recommended (and blurbed)! Could be a good book club read? #novemberbythenumbers day 4
I have been reading this book forever. Life sort of got in the way of my reading time. I think that might be the reason I didn't love it. The descriptions of Montana and the woods were beautifully written but I just kept falling out of the story. This is one I might read again in a few years to give it another chance.
Day 95: Happy Fourth of July!! We had a blast tonight....you see what I did there 😉🤗🎇🎆🇺🇸

Honoring our family's 4th of July tradition. Can you name that movie from one screen shot?
My granddaughter is here and it's the perfect day to start this book! Happy 4th everyone!
Hoping this ice cream and a good book will save the day. Home sick for the day with an awful cold 🤧😷
I bailed when the social worker protagonist ran into another SSW he had only met once before in an office at a grocery store and they hooked up for the night. Pointless. I'm good with the irony of a *ucked up SSW trying to help *ucked up kids, but this was plain dumb and I couldn't suspend my disbelief. Really disappointed bc the storyline about the pinecone eating separatist family could have been interesting. Photo w/o jacket bc I'm annoyed.
I just can't read anymore of this book. I'm a bit disappointed too because it has a great rating here on Litsy. I don't really like the authors writing style, I'm getting characters confused and at times not really knowing which "he" the author is referring to. Then there's these weird "interviews" with the main character's daughter.....I don't know. I just gotta bail.
A profound, heart-wrenching story about lost souls and broken families, about the kind of folks who fall through the cracks of society—and the individuals who dedicate their lives to helping them. At times I was reminded of the sinister, gritty vibe that I loved about True Detective. It falters a bit in scope, but Henderson's ambition ultimately pays off, allowing him to explore the complexities of poverty, fear, ignorance, freedom, love and hope.
I came home from a few days away to find my #cupidgoespostal gift waiting for me!! I have it waiting on top of my upstairs priority TBR pile (which is kept in the wooden bassinet I slept in as a baby). Bentley is busy scoping it out - neither one of us is very patient 🙄 is it February yet?!? ❤📚❤📚❤
I hate to bail on this, because it is really well-written, but it is a brutal read. I'm halfway through it and just can't take another 250 pages of this right now. Time to move on.
#booknerdproblems #photoadaynov16. Well, that got cut off... don't really want to read this but I will because it's for book club
The story of a Montana social worker of questionable character and his attempts to help the son of a anti-government survivalist. Terrific writing but it's a harsh picture of rural America with characters that are often hard to like.
Fiction. Story of a Social Worker (with major baggage) working in rural Montana in 1980's with a heavy caseload. Raw, gritty, harrowing
& powerful! Not for everyone. Bumpy ride~ but I enjoyed it! 📚💗
Celebrating authors of the PNW down at Klindt's Booksellers and Stationers in The Dalles, OR! Klindt's was the first bookshop in the PNW and is a historic landmark☺️ #klindtsbooksellers #getindie
This is my book mail today. Amazon loves me. Both of these were recommended by Littens. I love it here.
Started reading this book on my dude ranch adventure (not finished with book yet). Both are/were kick-ass experiences!
#recommendsday pick: this novel blew me away when I read it, a complete surprise. (No kindles were harmed in the making of this photo 😸) #sullivancat
Good book. Interesting story that touches on a lot of social issues through the eyes of a social worker.
I haven't enjoyed a book this much in quite a while. Definitely my favorite read of the year so far!
In honor of today: This novel is gutting and amazing. Highly recommended.
A great story about a screwed up guy with a screwed up family trying to help even more screwed up people while working as a social worker in 1980s Montana.
Had this on my shelf for about a year. Thought I'd give it a try ( it is almost July 4th!). Just a few pages in and I'm hooked. This is going to be good!
