"For a hundred and forty years Carmilla has given readers' bodies and souls a shake, because the vampire is beautiful but repulsive, to be resisted at all costs, because the narrative alternates so imaginatively between twittering girlies and an urgent need to reach for sharpened wooden stakes. Is there any reason it won't continue to do so far into the future? Give it a read, and feel how it crawls under your skin." From the Foreword by Daniel Richler The goal of The House of Pomegranates Press is to produce arcane and magical little packages full of words that inform, disturb and most importantly, inspire. With Carmilla we begin our Vintage Vampire series. Over the next few years we intend to publish - beautifully - as many vintage vampire novels as we can. Why? Because since childhood we've been haunted by these stories. As we grew, our complicated messy brains morphed these stories and characters from esoteric shadows under our beds into real, tangible, existentialist demons. They walked amongst us, they became our friends, our lovers, our fears. We felt it was time to gather those demons, wrap them in lovely covers and place them into a modern context with intelligent introductions by fascinating people. And so here you have Carmilla beautifully illustrated by Taeden Hall with a foreword by the quite wonderful, erudite Mr. Daniel Richler. Who better than he to blend vampires, Victoriana, politics, feminism and girl school lesbianism? Enjoy.

“…and they were roommates!” 😂 Hear me out, a pre-cursor to Dracula, but it‘s a thinly-veiled reference to lesbians! I can imagine the pearl-clutching this induced in the late 1800s! This was a great read, especially when you get the edition with a lovely, insightful introduction written by the editor, Carmen Maria Machado, and illustrations by Robert Kraiza. If you love vampire lore, this is a must-read!

I listened to the dramatized version starring Phoebe Fox as Carmilla, Rose Leslie as Laura, and David Tennant as Dr Hesselius (an ovious precursor of Van Helsing), and it was a blast. Such quality performance, and the text itself also doesn‘t disappoint. I sometimes don‘t like classics because of the stiffness of both the language and the storytelling—not a case this time. Hard to believe something like this was written in the XIXth century. 4.0/5

I‘ve been on the hunt for the best vampire story. And since Carmilla inspired Dracula I figured that would be the place to start.

This is supposedly where it all began and I can totally see why. Carmilla was eerie and creepy. Definitely one to read in the daylight. If you‘re a vampire lover you need to check this one out.

3¾⭐ | NARRATION 😍 = Amazing
It‘s crazy that this was written back in 1872...and that I listened to it, and liked it. I don‘t usually like books written earlier than the 2000s. Maybe, I would like them more if Audible did full-cast productions of them like this one was. While this performance was a tad breathy, it was still fun. Despite being able to discern where the story was headed.

This is a short read that can be finished in under two hours if one can stay focused. It actually moves at a very slow pace until things finally start to happen over the last three chapters. The ending was fun and the read ended up being worth it! This is the book that supposedly influenced Bram Stoker so it‘s interesting to see how elements of Lefanu‘s vampire resemble those of the modern bloodsucker.

Listened to this on audiobook. Excellent reader; creepy and alluring. I like the descriptive, almost over-dramatic writing. I don‘t know if I‘ve read a traditional gothic ghost story before, and I‘d be interested in reading more. There‘s definitely suspense set up and almost too much information given away right away but there are still raw, disturbing moments. I just thought the ending fizzled out a bit.

Before Dracula - there was Carmilla! Carmilla was definitely Victorian. It read to me like an epistolary novel mixed with a manor novel mixed with gothic horror. The difference being that it was very short (Little Dorrit anyone). And it was oddly erotic. But I think that is a hallmark of this writing period and style? Thoughts? It was a bit jarring to my modern sensibilities, but I liked it on the whole.

The story of Laura, a young girl who becomes preyed upon by a female vampire in Austria, Laura lives with her father & is lonely until one night a woman & her daughter arrive claiming a carriage accident outside their house, but not all is as it seems.

As if I needed another reason to love Machado‘s In the Dream House, it introduced me to this fantastic story. I think most read it to see the influence on Dracula, but it‘s very much worth reading on its on merit. It‘s scary, but it‘s the undercurrent of a dangerous, forbidden love that sets it apart.

Set in Styria, I think I can count it for Austria for #ReadingEurope2020

Also gets me off to a good start for #ClassicsChallenge2020

This was one of the freebies from Audible this month. I had never heard of this story, somehow inexplicably. It‘s an excellent little vampire tale. And it was published in 1872, so it predates Dracula by 25 years or so. The cast is wonderful. Of course, they had me Tennant. Now I must find the tale to read as well. 😊🧛‍♀️ 📚🖤

This was a quick (3 ish hour) audiobook, with a female vampire. Written 25 years before Dracula, it‘s said to be a big influence of that more famous title.

I‘m not a huge fan of classics, but this one is faster paced than most, probably because of the length. It‘s got that fun horror feeling of dread, with a great bloody conclusion that‘ll definitely satisfy.

Just barely a pick for me, if it were longer I wouldn‘t have enjoyed it as much.

Soubhiville Another heavily touted point of this novella is it‘s lesbian leanings. There‘s definitely something to be said of the attraction between the main character and her friend. It didn‘t get explicit though, at least in my opinion. #queerbooks #queerclassic 5y

Carmilla is THE original vampire story - before Dracula, the vampire was female and loved women. Carmilla is a much subtler villain than a male vampire - she beguiles, lures, pursues in romantic love. Some scenes are very erotic - quite unexpected lesbian fantasy from a Victorian man. The story is thrilling and overly romanticized and melodramatic, but it works.

A fantastic free pickup from Audible for October 2019. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Gezemice I picked it up because David Tennant is on the cover, but he only has a small role. Never mind, the cast does a wonderful job playing up the melodrama. I don‘t normally care for melodrama, but this is a Victorian piece and it just fits like a glove. Pick it up while it lasts! 5y

🎧 one of my free Audible books this month. I got it because David Tennant was billed first in the full cast. Well he‘s not prominent. He reads the part of the doctor with what seems like a poor Austrian accent? It is a creepy October book and short but nothing special. The Doctor‘s voice is recognizable so it gets an extra star & not So-So cuz it was short so while I may not get those 2 hours of my life back, meh, it was just 2 hours.😁 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Car mills has long been on my TBR, so when I saw that Audible had a full cast production with David Tennant performing this story that inspired Bram Stoker‘s Dracula, I knew it was the right time to read it. Not a long story, but very engaging, made even more so with the audio production. I can see why Stoker was taken with this. The book fills the vampire scavenger hunt #TeamStoker #Scarathlon (2 pts for book team theme, 1 pt participation)

There's no surprise as to the identity of the vampire in this classic gothic novel (it's the book's title!), so the burden of the story lies with Le Fanu's abilities to turn a phrase and to conjure an atmospheric scene. Fortunately, he's more than capable, and there's the reason why "Carmilla" has been in print since 1872. If the ending was a little abrupt, at least it contained the intriguing Baron Vordenburg, screaming for his own story!
