Borden Murders: Lizzie Borden & the Trial of the Century
Borden Murders: Lizzie Borden & the Trial of the Century | Sarah Elizabeth Miller
53 posts | 43 read | 186 to read
Here s middle-grade nonfiction that reads like a thriller. With murder, court battles, and sensational newspaper headlines, the story of Lizzie Borden is compulsively readable and perfect for the Common Core. "Lizzie Borden took an axe, gave her mother forty whacks. When she saw what she had done, she gave her father forty-one." "" In a compelling, linear narrative, Miller takes readers along as she investigates a brutal crime: the August 4, 1892, murders of wealthy and prominent Andrew and Abby Borden. The accused? Mild-mannered and highly respected Lizzie Borden, daughter of Andrew and stepdaughter of Abby. Most of what is known about Lizzie s arrest and subsequent trial (and acquittal) comes from sensationalized newspaper reports; as Miller sorts fact from fiction, and as a legal battle gets under way, a gripping portrait of a woman and a town emerges. With inserts featuring period photos and newspaper clippings and, yes, images from the murder scene readers will devour this nonfiction book that reads like fiction. "Sure to be a hit with true crime fans everywhere." "School Library Journal," Starred"

This book is geared to a YA audience, though I didn‘t think it read that way. The author did a lot of research and tried to present both sides. It turns out nothing Lizzie said during the indictment was included at the trial, nor was key testimony of one witness. Even if they had been included, I‘m not convinced it would have been enough to convict her. However, I‘m not sure how anyone else could have done it. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin There were some photos included at the end and a bibliography and notes. I was quite shocked at the look of the skulls (quite bashed in!) of Mr. and Mrs. Borden. And who knew there was (is?) a “Lizzie Borden Quarterly” journal!? I thought this was a good place to start to read about Lizzie and I am likely to find and read more. 1y

“It happened every spring in Fall River,
Massachusetts. Behind the curtained
windows of the stately house she shared
with her sister on French Street, Miss
Lizbeth Borden heard the children
skipping rope on the sidewalk, chanting
a rhyme to the once-popular tune of
"Ta-Ra-Ra Boom-De-Ay":
Lizzie Borden took an axe,
Gave her mother forty whacks.
When she saw what she had
done,
She gave her father forty-one.”

While this book dragged slightly in places, it is an excellent account of the events of the Borden murders/trial/aftermath. Miller doesn‘t give way to sensationalism or a bias when she would be forgiven if she did. I was already a Borden/true crime buff, but I was still able to glean new info from this book! For the record, I don‘t think Lizzie did it. #ChildrensLitClass

After an incredibly LONG day of building, realizing we were doing it wrong, disassembling, rebuilding and then reorganizing the boy and I finally got this beast built last night before bed. The entire process? Almost 12 freaking hours! This shit should not have taken nearly as long. But it's done, the boy is happy as hell and today will be spent reading and spending time apart. We've bonded enough for this weekend 😂

Sarah Miller, #LitsyAuthor, has given a very balanced account of #TheBordenMurders a #truecrime that happened on August 4, 1892. As a maid and Lizzie Borden were the only ones home at the time of the murders, Lizzie became a major suspect. She was arrested, tried and found innocent as the prosecution didn‘t have any real evidence against her. Even after all this time, nobody has actually been charged with the murder. Very interesting book!

A straightforward accounting of the events surrounding the murders and trial. I was already somewhat familiar with the Lizzie Borden story, so none of this was groundbreaking to me. And as this is a true crime book about a very famous unsolved crime, I would have liked more focus on theories about what happened.

mabell And I like your festive photo! 🎄❤️ 6y
Gissy @mabell The only "graphic" scenes are when they describe the murders but besides that the story is interesting on how biased was the process. There are some photos related with the crime. I found that part also interesting. I don't have cable or anything like that at this time (spending more time reading) but I used to watch true crime and forensic science programs. Love them! 6y
mabell @Gissy It sounds good! Maybe because it is such an old crime that it doesn‘t make me sad in the way true crime usually does. 6y

This was a really fascinating look at a morbid piece of history. We may never know what really happened but the facts laid out in this book were intriguing. Lizzie may have been found innocent in a court of law but was definitely guilty in public opinion. The entire situation is just sad.

What a contrast to See What I Have Done this book is. It is a very readable and concise account of the Borden murders. I am still holding on to my opinion that Lizzie did not do it and there definitely wasn't enough evidence to convict her. If this subject interests you, I highly recommend this book. Thanks to @Reviewsbylola for telling me about it. I ❤️ the endpapers too. #ripxii

Kaye I'm on the side of Innocent, too. 7y
Mdargusch Love it 👍🏼 @Kaye and @Notafraidofwords ! Glad to have some support on this. 7y
Mdargusch Just because there's not another option doesn't make her guilty @Reviewsbylola . 7y
emilyhaldi Wow I didn't realize so many people think she is innocent!? I thought it was pretty much fact that she did. Now I really can't wait to get reading both of these 😁 7y
Kaye @Mdargusch It's not very common for ladies to use an axe to murder someone. They usually use poison or a gun. Less messy. Plus, it didn't sound as though there was any history of violence in her past. Wasn't there a male relative visiting right about the same time? Also, Andrew Borden sounded like a pretty unpleasant fellow and possibly had some enemies that decided to Off Him. The wife would have had to go too. Don't leave any witnesses. (edited) 7y
Mdargusch Get to it @emilyhaldi - I need your opinion. 7y
Notafraidofwords @emilyhaldi I listened to a podcast about the case and learned so much. I just don't think she did it. 7y
Kaye @emilyhaldi Do you remember which podcast it was? I'm subscribed to a truckload of them but haven't listened to any in a few weeks now. 7y
Reviewsbylola But she was there the whole time. So how could she have not seen what was happening or heard something? I'm suspicious of the maid too. 7y
Kaye @Reviewsbylola I read books about her a long time ago, but if I recall, wasn't Lizzie doing some type of chores in the barn and picking pears or something? The maid sounded too much like a chicken. I don't think she had it in her. Wasn't she sick with the flu that day? (edited) 7y
Rachbb3 I'm of the opinion she did it, but I am going to read this book and get more familiar. 7y
Reviewsbylola I feel like I am forgetting a few details. But yes the maid was sleeping upstairs for a bit right before the bodies were discovered. Before that she was washing windows and puking in the backyard. Meanwhile Lizzie claimed to be out back eating pears for 20-30 minutes at some point. There's a good chance that there was a good chunk of time between the death of Abby and the death of Andrew. And the doors were all locked. 🕵🏻‍♀️🕵🏻‍♀️ @kaye 7y
Reviewsbylola Obviously it will always be a mystery BUT in my opinion, it is just way more likely than not that Lizzie did it. @kaye The facts in this book are what convinced me. (edited) 7y
Mdargusch They proved the door popped open when locked if it wasn't slammed. @Reviewsbylola and @Kaye. Also the detective climbed over their fence while people were in the house and no one saw him through windows. Also the ice cream delivery boy saw Lizzie come out of the barn at the time she said. And I also have trouble with a girl using an ax. 7y
Mdargusch I'd love to listen to that podcast @Notafraidofwords if you remember what it was. 7y
Mdargusch I'll be interested in your thoughts @Rachbb3 7y
Notafraidofwords @Mdargusch it's called the Lizzie Borden Podcast. 7y
Kaye This is why I like true crime so much when you find a case like this that is questionable. Lots of different angles to look at and each person has their own opinion. I guess we will never truly know what the answer was. So it'll always be unsolved since they never found anyone guilty in a trial. 7y
MarriedtoMrT I loved this book and I'm also side innocent. While I don't have a mind for details, there were too many questions about the dad's contacts for me. Plus, Lizzie was in the barn for a bit and the maid was in the house the whole time! I think the maid either knew something or was involved somehow. 7y
Mdargusch Yes @MarriedtoMrT , why didn't the maid hear anything? It's easier for me to believe Lizzie in the barn not hearing anything than the maid upstairs. 7y
Kelly Loved this one and agree with your side of her not being guilty. 7y
Mdargusch I definitely feel like she was the easiest target @kelly 7y
Cinfhen I've only read See What I Have Done & the ONLY thing I am certain of, Lizzie is missing a few crayons from her box! But the axe thing got me too! (edited) 7y
Cinfhen Although EVERYONE else was sick from the "rotten" stew, except Lizzie who "knew" to avoid it ? 7y
Mdargusch If you read this book @Cinfhen there's more details and some women trying to buy poison. And was Lizzie one of those women. Now @emilyhaldi needs to read this because she just finished SWIHD. 7y
BarbaraBB So much interesting new facts are mentioned above! To me there was no doubt that she was guilty as Sarah Schmidt made me believe that and I didn‘t know the story before. Think of how influenced one can be by one author‘s opinion.... scary 😱 7y
Mdargusch The author definitely used her artistic license in See What I Have Done and turned it into a horror story @BarbaraBB (edited) 7y

Mdargusch Already there's more explanations and details about the day. It covers why Lizzie went to the barn, why she was eating pears, the layout of the house, and what her friends and neighbors thought of her. Also it's YA, so it's not bogged down in too many details. @Cinfhen and @Rachbb3. 7y

This was a fascinating read and I can't believe it's a YA book! There was so much detail about the crimes and the entire trial process - I loved it. Based on the book, the verdict of Not Guilty was definitely correct as the prosecution failed to prove definitive (or any) guilt. Man, my nerdy little forensic scientist heart wishes I could get my hands on that evidence! 👩🏼‍🔬🔬

8little_paws Lol is that Christina Ricci as Lizzie Borden?! 8y
JacintaMCarter @8little_paws Yes! She played her in the Lifetime movie Lizzie Borden Took an Axe, and the Lifetime series The Lizzie Borden Chronicles. 8y

I forgot while reading this #blameitonlitsy pick that it's a middle grade book-it's smartly written & reads like any true-crime story. A quick, interesting read that doesn't give any answers to the unsolved case but provides lots of details & allows the reader to determine what they think happened. The photo insert in the back is great too. 👍 My #litsyreadingchallenge #LRC13 as I think 'the trial of the century' qualifies as a historical event.😀

Reviewsbylola I kept checking to make sure it was middle grade! It read like an adult book to me. 8y

I watch quite a bit of true-crime TV but have never read any. Sarah Miller writes a compelling and accessible summation of one of the nation's most notorious crimes. Ultimately, there are an astounding amount of un-answered questions because, no matter what the courts decided, the minds of the police were made up with little evidence. News coverage and treatment of a woman who does not fit the mold are uncomfortably familiar to what happens today.

The Boston Globe reported a scandalous expose supposedly solving the Borden murders only to be immediately discredited. "How had a paper as prominent and respected as the Boston Globe gotten itself into such a fix?" (Ahem, Rolling Stone.)

An apology was issued, "But the damage to Lizzie Borden's reputation would never be completely undone."

Fake news was alive and well in the 1890s. Newspapers were THE way to get info and drama sold papers.

On the final day of Lizzie Borden's preliminary hearing: "The audience on this most pivotal day was especially lively...The women had brought boxes of candy and crimped their children's hair, and chattered as though they were waiting to watch a matinee."

"We" rail on reality TV and violent video games, etc. but didn't we always, as a society, take glee in other's drama and misfortune? Now it's virtual and sometimes fictional instead of real life.

MarriedtoMrT Well, still real life, too, but less watching hangings and bringing movie snacks to murder trials. 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag The scale is much broader now though, we can watch things unfold from a much greater distance. 8y
MarriedtoMrT @thegirlwiththelibrarybag That is true. And sometimes that distance allows us to pretend it's not real and takes the humanity from horrific events. I just have such a hard time wrapping my mind around the gleeful in-person trial watch but I do watch crime shows on TV, even "real" ones so maybe it's no different. 8y

Notafraidofwords This was recently explored in one of the books I read. So true. 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @MarriedtoMrT, I meant more that in the past you physically had to be there - to see a hanging, to watch a court trial... hadn't thought of the crime show/drama angle... crime/punishment as entertainment has been going on for a long time (just think of the gladiators in the colosseum) 8y
MarriedtoMrT @thegirlwiththelibrarybag Gotcha. Yes, it has. 8y

This post has little to do w/the book besides me reading it while trying the new Starbucks Cascara latte. Cascara means husk/shell in Spanish & it's made w/a syrup that comes from the outer shell of the coffee cherry & coconut & cane sugar. It's actually not bad, fruity & not too sweet. I got mine iced/soy as we lost our breezes-it's warm & the air is hazy & full of vog which is taking me a few steps back on the breathing.😷The book is good too!👍

Mimi28 Hope the weather gets better and your breathing gets better ❤❤ 8y
DebinHawaii @Mimi28 Thanks! I can still breathe so much better than last week but the vog triggers my wheeze. 👍😀 8y
Mimi28 I don't want to sound dumb, but what's vog? 8y
See All 19 Comments
rubyslippersreads Does the V in vog stand for volcano? 8y
Bklover Hope your breathing gets better! Love my Starbucks! 8y
DebinHawaii @Mimi28 @rubyslippersreads Sorry, I forget it isn't a common thing everywhere. Vog is air pollution from sulfur dioxide & other gasses released from erupting volcanos (in this case from The Big Island's Kilauea volcano). The word is a portmanteau (always love a reason to use that in a sentence) or blending of smog, fog, & volcanic. 🌋 Here we have a vog index & warnings for the lung-compromised to stay indoors & hydrate! 😷😆 (edited) 8y
DebinHawaii @Bklover Thank you!👍😀 8y
Dolly Interesting, I always just assumed the air was very clean there. ❤️☕️❤️ 8y
DeborahSmall I was going to ask too @Mimi28! @DebinHawaii I love the word portmanteau so much lol!! 8y
DebinHawaii @Dolly It is when the trades winds are blowing and the wind is going the right way which is a majority of the time. When I first moved here it wasn't an issue but another vent opened in the volcano in 2008 & it's much worse now. But I guess we could argue that it is natural versus man-made pollution although still not great for the lungs. 😬 @DeborahSmall Isn't it an awesome word?! 😆👍💜 8y
DeborahSmall So so good and I don't think I've ever been in a position to use it. I'll have to think of conversations I can have, where I can naturally insert it 😆👍🏼 8y
Mimi28 Wow!! That's weird and very interesting!! Thanks for explaining. The weather is pretty much boring here in Chicago. Not many environmental issues, just cold and windy or hot and humid, lol. Hope it gets better and you feel better!! ❤ 8y
KVanRead I had never heard of vog before! Thanks for the explanation. While I'm sorry to have to cope with it, it is an awesome word. 8y
Lidia Wow I've never heard of vog before either. I have asthma and allergies so I think I understand you. Hope you feel better soon. And thanks for your review on the new Stabucks latte! 😊 8y
DebinHawaii @DeborahSmall I think Litsy seems like a good place to throw it in on occasion! Hah! 😂😂 8y
DebinHawaii @Mimi28 @KVanRead @Lidia My pleasure! Not the vog but sharing about the realities (good & bad) of living here. 😆😂 And an occasional coffee beverage review too @Lidia ☕️👍 8y
Cinfhen Favorite post of the day❤️🙌🏻☕️ 8y
DebinHawaii @Cinfhen Aww. Thank you! ☺️ 8y

I've always been curious about Lizzie Borden and the murder of her father and step mother, however if there was a straight forward, comprehensive book detailing the crime, I hadn't discovered it. This book delivered just what I was looking for. No detail was too small and it was so well done that I felt transported to 1892.

Reviewsbylola I just wish there was an actual answer as to who was responsible for the murders. I find it very unlikely that someone was able to sneak in and murder Mrs Borden and then stay hidden in order to later murder Mr Borden. Realistically, I feel that it had to be either Bridget or Lizzie. It kills me that there is no known answer. 😭😭 8y
PenguinInFlight I need to read this!! I've always been interested in it as well, but haven't found any really good books on it. Definitely adding this to the TBR. ☺👍🏻 8y
LeahBergen I'm DYING to get my hands on this one. I've been a bit Lizzie obsessed since I was a teenager. 8y

JackieSmith An episode of the Unsolved Murders podcast focused on this crime. They also concluded that it was Lizzie & Bridget working together. The two ladies were also "closer than friends" & the podcast hosts thought that it was a crime of passion so the two of them could stay together. 8y
Iamlisa22 So... did she do it? I haven't read this one but from what I have read before it was always in question ⛏ 8y
Reviewsbylola Interesting, because there is not even a hint of that in the book. In fact, it basically said Bridget couldn't wait to get out of the house and didn't say much of anything about her after the trial. But I could believe it, because it is hard to believe that the murders happened without either one of them knowing. @JackieSmith I will definitely have to look up that podcast. 8y
Reviewsbylola That's the thing, the book lays out all the evidence but there really is no definitive answer. So I guess we'll never know. Personally, I don't see how Lizzie couldn't have been involved. @Iamlisa22 8y
britt_brooke Ooh, I want to read this! 8y
MarriedtoMrT Finished this today and I kind of think Bridget conspired with someone outside to do it. Lizzie had nothing really to gain and no real motive (unless there was some unknown abuse) but Bridget was trying to get out. The flaw, to me, is why wasn't Lizzie killed as well? Because she was in the barn? I do agree that it seems very unlikely that either Bridget or Lizzie could not know what was going on if they were in the house. 8y
Reviewsbylola There are just so many questions, but ultimately I just can't see how either Bridget or Lizzie could be present the whole time and not see anything or know anything. The time lapse between the murders--if the murderer wasn't one of the women, then where did they go during that time span? It is just so odd. @MarriedtoMrT 8y

A little murder over breakfast... 😱 Starting the morning with Eggs Caprese, a coffee press of Maui Mokka Peaberry and a few pages of my library e-book before I start trying to be productive. I needed the full on caffeine surge this morning to get me over hump day. 🐪☕️
