Around the World in 80 Days - The Original Classic Edition (Original Classic)
Around the World in 80 Days - The Original Classic Edition (Original Classic) | Jules Verne
Take a journey of imagination. In this all-time favorite, Phileas Fogg and his manservant set out to win a wager by travelling around the world in 80 days. They embark on a fantastic, action-packed journey into a world filled with danger and beauty, from India to the American frontier. This is a high quality book of the original classic edition. It was previously published by other bona fide publishers, and is now, finally, back in print. This is a freshly published edition of this culturally important work, which is now, at last, again available to you.Enjoy this classic work. These few paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside: When he breakfasted or dined all the resources of the club-its kitchens and pantries, its buttery and dairy-aided to crowd his table with their most succulent stores; he was served by the gravest waiters, in dress coats, and shoes with swan-skin soles, who proffered the viands in special porcelain, and on the finest linen; club decanters, of a lost mould, contained his sherry, his port, and his cinnamon-spiced claret; while his beverages were refreshingly cooled with ice, brought at great cost from the American lakes. It comprised all that was required of the servant, from eight in the morning, exactly at which hour Phileas Fogg rose, till half-past eleven, when he left the house for the Reform Club-all the details of service, the tea and toast at twenty-three minutes past eight, the shaving-water at thirty-seven minutes past nine, and the toilet at twenty minutes before ten. Phileas Fogg, having shut the door of his house at half-past eleven, and having put his right foot before his left five hundred and seventy-five times, and his left foot before his right five hundred and seventy-six times, reached the Reform Club, an imposing edifice in Pall Mall, which could not have cost less than three millions. He took out and consulted a pocket almanac, and added, 'As today is Wednesday, the 2nd of October, I shall be due in London in this very room of the Reform Club, on Saturday, the 21st of December, at a quarter before nine p.m.; or else the twenty thousand pounds, now deposited in my name at Baring's, will belong to you, in fact and in right, gentlemen. This was Fix, one of the detectives who had been dispatched from England in search of the bank robber; it was his task to narrowly watch every passenger who arrived at Suez, and to follow up all who seemed to be suspicious characters, or bore a resemblance to the description of the criminal, which he had received two days before from the police headquarters at London.

Hey friends! Almost time for the February #BookSpin, so now is the time to put together your list!! Tagged book was my January pick, which I did finish, so we will see what happens in February. 😁 Post your list of 20 books between now and February 2, and I'll draw a number at random - everyone reads that number book from their lists. I am keeping track of who posts lists and who posts reviews of their chosen book, because I may have a ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) giveaway at the end of the year. Feel free to repost this graphic as well. Below are the people who were tagged last month/asked to be tagged this month. If you want to be added or removed from the tag list, please just ask me, as I don't want to tag people annoyingly. 😆 Looking forward to seeing your lists - hoping to post mine tomorrow!! 3w
Chrissyreadit Ohh! I was distracted and forgot. Will work on list today 3w

imyril Ha! I didn‘t realise it was a different list each month 😂 but as I skipped January‘s spin I‘ll use the same list since even if the same number comes up I still want to read that book 😊 3w
RachelO I love this idea! Going to post a list now 😊 Also, what @imyril asked - a different list each month? (edited) 3w
TheAromaofBooks @imyril - Well I am technically using the same list except with a replacement for the one I read haha so you can post the same list, a different list, or the same books in a different order - whatever works for you!! 3w
TheAromaofBooks @Chrissyreadit @RachelO - looking forward to your lists!!! 3w
TheAromaofBooks @RachelO - sorry, missed your question at first. It's whatever you want - I am using January's list but replacing the book I read. You can do that every month, or fresh books, or the same books and change their order - literally however you want. I may end up reading some of the books on my list even if they aren't chosen, so it will change a bit every month. 3w
RachelO @TheAromaofBooks 👍 Perfect- thank you! 3w
llwheeler I'm almost finished my Jan book! I think I will keep my same list 🙂 3w
TheAromaofBooks @llwheeler - sounds good!! You may want to choose a replacement for slot 18 because there is always a chance that I'll draw the same number again!! 😁 3w
Melismatic I love this idea! I don‘t have 20 unread books on my shelf tho...i have around 15....any excuse to get more? 😂🤷🏻‍♀️ id love to follow along regardless! 3w
TheAromaofBooks @Melismatic - Would love to have you along!! You can either add five books to your list that you've been meaning to read but don't have on your shelf (maybe books you would check out of the library or something), or give five of your fifteen books double numbers - one of the books may be both 2 and 18, or something along those lines. Tag me when you post your list, and I'll tag you when I draw the number next Sunday!! 3w
Melismatic @TheAromaofBooks ooh ok! Works for me! I‘ll get my list together now 🥰 3w
llwheeler True, if 18 does get picked again I might use another of my tbr books by the same author, or else # 19 might do double duty for 18 and 19... 3w
TheDaysGoBy I love this idea! Though I do kind of have February spoken for as a friend and are doing a buddy read before we meet up in person in March. So hopefully I can catch you then! Really fun idea! 3w
olivia.ferz Yaas!!! I'll be doing this too. I may not finish it but at least I'll be giving it a try! 3w
TheAromaofBooks @TheDaysGoBy - I keep a list of people who want to be tagged when it's time to pick the lists, so if you want, I can add you to the list for the March tag? 3w
TheAromaofBooks @olivia.ferz - yay!! Just tag me when you post your list, and I'll let you know what number I draw next Sunday!! 3w
veritysalter Will do ♥️ 3w
mabell Thanks! January‘s book is not going to finished in January 🤪, but maybe I can get January and February completed in February! I‘m using the same list and combining 18 with 19. 😄 3w
TheDaysGoBy @TheAromaofBooks That would be great! Thanks so much! 🙂 3w
jb72 That‘s a great idea. I set myself up a similar challenge. I may join you with my kryptonite books. 3w
TheAromaofBooks @jb72 - That would be great!! I use this one to do books that I've recently acquired but haven't read yet. For my everyday reading, I do another random number generator of all the books I want to read but am checking out of the library. Anyway, you can make this list of books fit any category you like!! 3w
TheAromaofBooks @mabell - sounds good!! And it's no pressure, so no worries if you don't get to January's book!! 😁 3w
TheAromaofBooks @thedaysgoby - I added you to the list!! Thanks for your interest! And have fun with your February buddy read!! 😊 3w
maleahrae Can you add me to the list? 3w
TheAromaofBooks @maleahrae - absolutely!! If you want to join this month, just a post a list/picture of a stack of your twenty books and tag me - and then I'll tag you when I draw the number next Sunday. If this month doesn't work for you, I'll let you know when we are getting ready for the March spin!! 3w
JackOBotts Such a neat idea! 3w
4thhouseontheleft I missed January's...this is a great idea! I've read almost all library books this month, I need a push to read from my shelves. Please tag me! (edited) 3w
ChasingOm Please add me to the list for February too! I‘ll put together my list tomorrow. 😄 3w
RainyDayReading How did I miss this?? Even though I missed January I‘d love to partake in February! I‘ll try to get a list of some sort together tonight before I leave for the rest of the week. 3w
TheAromaofBooks @ChasingOm @RainyDayReading - Glad to have you along!! I won't draw the number until next Sunday (February 2) so as long as you post your list any time between now and then you will be good to go. 3w
Yoshi-and-a-book That is so super 😎. I‘m in and will tag you with my list 3w
ferskner Please add me! This is such a fun idea. 3w

nelehelen I missed Jan but would love to join for Feb!! 3w
jenniferw88 Add me as well please! About to post my list! 3w
TheAromaofBooks @Yoshi-and-a-book @ferskner @nelehelen - I don't draw the number until Sunday (Feb 2), so as long as you post your list before then (and tag me) I'll be sure to let you know the magic number!! Either way, I've added you to my master list, so even if you don't want to join for February, I'll tag you when it's time to pick March's list. 😊 3w
tdrosebud Please add me. I've noticed others sharing lists and checked to see what it is all about. I'll work on getting a list together. 3w
amber_ldsmom Add me, too! 🙋‍♀️ 3w

TheAromaofBooks @tdrosebud @amber_ldsmom @DrexEdit @AmyG - glad to have you along!! I've added you all to the master list - be sure to tag me if you decide to post lists for this month. I won't draw the number until Sunday (Feb 2) so there is still plenty of time!! 😊 3w
robinb Oh, oh I want to play!! 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️ Sounds like fun...can you add me to the list, and I‘ll work on putting something together this week. 3w
TheAromaofBooks @robinb - Absolutely!! I'm not drawing the number until Sunday (Feb 2) so still plenty of time. I actually haven't posted my list yet! 😆 3w
Crazeedi @TheAromaofBooks I love this, I've not seen this before but if I still have time to get a list together I'd love to join in, I have many tbr on my shelf. Are you doing physical books or ebooks? I have many of both! 3w
TheAromaofBooks @Crazeedi - still plenty of time - I won't draw until Sunday (Feb 2). The list can be literally whatever you want! Last month I did a list of books I have been putting off; this month I am doing mostly books on my “recent arrivals“ shelf (some of which have been there a couple years, whoops!). Some people are doing audio books, Kindle books, ARCs, or just random books they have around - however you want to compile your list totally works!! 3w
TheAromaofBooks @Crazeedi - I even have a few people who didn't have a full 20, so just doubled numbers on some of their titles. As you can see, this is a pretty lawless challenge! 😆 3w
robinb @TheAromaofBooks thanks!! 👍😊 3w
Crazeedi @TheAromaofBooks not to worry I have TONS of unread on my shelf, kindle and ARCs. I'm even thinking I'd have 20 partly finished books I could make a list with one of these months! Great to know the skys the limit! Whoohoo! Thanks so much!😘😍❤ 3w
JaclynW What a fun idea! I will have to get a list together. 3w

I was surprised at how entertaining and readable this classic ended up being. Verne's heroes are always strong, silent, scientific men, and Fogg is no exception. We never really find out why he takes on his bet, but he calmly deals with every delay that appears. My favorite part is when his servant rescues the girl, but the girl views Fogg as the hero and falls in love! 😆 Published in 1872, so there is definitely a sense of inherent white ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) supremacy as they pass through areas like India and Japan, but this was the height of colonialism, so in a weird way it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be?? All in all, Verne weaves a fun and entertaining tale that I definitely recommend.

One book down for #24B4Monday!! Haven't been tracking my hours this time around, but hoping to finish two more books by the end of the weekend. @Andrew65 @TheReadingMermaid @jb72

TheAromaofBooks @ljuliel - my dad is an engineer, and he loves Jules Verne so much. I grew up reading his books, but haven't revisited them in a long time. Hoping to read 20,000 Leagues and The Mysterious Island this year, too! 3w

jb72 Great start! I have two of his books but haven‘t read them yet. 3w
Andrew65 It is a good book. You are going well. 👏👏👏 3w
TheAromaofBooks @jb72 - Verne is especially interesting when you consider him in the context of his time. Some of the scientific stuff he was writing about was basically sci-fi when he was writing it, but later became reality, so it can be fun reading. 3w

No time goal this weekend (although I always enjoy tracking it for fun), but I really, really want to read the tagged book. It's my #bookspin pick for January, and it would be great if I could read it before it's time to pick another! 😆

TheAromaofBooks @Andrew65 @TheReadingMermaid @jb72 … just realized that you all aren't on this month's graphic, so now I'm not sure you want to be tagged for all the posts?? 4w

A few days ago I introduced my personal challenge for the year - a monthly #BookSpin ! The concept is simple - make a list of 20 books languishing on your TBR. On the 2nd of every month, I draw a number, & you read that book sometime during the month!

January's number - 18!! I get to read the tagged book! Be sure to tag me with the book you get to read, and let me know when you read it!
@imyril @llwheeler @Lcsmcat @Butterfinger @mabell

TheAromaofBooks And just a reminder - sometimes books linger on the TBR because, deep down, we don't really want to read them. Please don't feel like you have to force yourself to read the book you drew. The challenge is to give the book a chance! If your review of the book is to say you bailed on it for any reason, that is A-OK. No pressure here. A DNF still means the book is off your list, and that's the goal. Happy reading!! ❤ (edited) 2mo

TheAromaofBooks @llwheeler - My dad is a big fan of Verne, so I read several of his books growing up, but somehow never got to this one. It's also been years since I've read 20,000 Leagues, so I'm hoping to get to that one this year as well. 2mo

*Probably an obvious choice here, but I haven‘t seen it used yet. Jules Verne is at top left; his illustrator, Hippolyte Léon Benett is pictured just right of Verne. All of the images pictured are Benett‘s; he was the most prolific illustrator of Verne‘s books. If you‘ve read it, you‘ll recognize the scenes. If you haven‘t, maybe you saw the movie? Anyway—Great book & especially great for kids. ♥️

Oh gosh, I've been through the adult section in the op shop, twice, then earlier this week I discovered the biography section....
I've gone back in today to just grab one book I saw earlier for a friend and now I've been stuck for hours in the teen/young adult section.
Only 2 small piles later......you know, for the kids...

Around the World in 80 Days is the lovely old cream colored book with the green tree on the spine.

I hate to admit that I had never read any Verne until this novel. What a delight! It‘s funny, informative, features some fascinating characters and a sort of chase. I was on the edge of my seat! A product of its time (1873), it also features some racist/colonialist views but still an entertaining story. https://cannonballread.com/2019/07/around-the-world-in-eighty-days-elcicco/

I really really liked this one. And I didn‘t for a moment expect to since I was so annoyed by The Centre of the Earth!
But this is a book about a nerdy control freak (so like myself 😉) who has a tight schedule to travel the world in 80 days. It‘s about countries and travelling in the old days and it‘s a bit of an adventure. I hope it fits the #middlegrade prompt for #Booked2019 since everyone I know read it at that age! #1001books

I have no idea why I have put this particular #1001book off for so long. A fast-paced adventure, dripping with cliches and humor, that was just a fun way to spend an afternoon. I decided to do audio because JIM DALE, and this recording is very cool with added music and sound effects to compliment a master of narration.

However. Wtf is this hot air balloon doing on the cover? 🤔

Clare-Dragonfly Weird! I‘m sure the abridged illustrated version I read a million times as a kid had a hot-air balloon section. At least an illustration. I obviously need to read the real thing! 1y
sprainedbrain @Clare-Dragonfly I‘ve done some googling, and I guess some movie versions had balloon travel, as well as a cartoon version. Plus, Verne had another story with balloon travel... I‘m still so confused about this cover. 😅 1y

This is a sort of 19th century version of The Amazing Race. Wonderful little tidbits of colourful history and plenty of misadventure made this a fun and interesting read.

🐘 Hairdressers appointment Saturday morning, nothing else set in stone as yet.

🐘 Sunrise, I always feel like it‘s full of promise for the day to come & it‘s so peaceful where I live because hardly anyone else is awake.

🐘 Not really, I don‘t mind the seaside but I‘m not one for sitting on the beach.

🐘 Boring mousy brown

🐘 Howdy to all #littens (especially @posierope who‘s found Friday at last! ❤️)

I read Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea as a child but for some reason did not go on to read any more of Jules Verne‘s works. I finally got around to reading this and it was a delight. I loved following Phileas Fogg and his French manservant Passepartout on their adventures traveling the globe. It makes me want to pick up some more of his books.

mabell I checked out all the Vernes I could from the library when I was young. I couldn't get enough! Around the World in 80 days was definitely one of my favorites. ❤️ 2y
Ncostell @mabell I‘m going to pick up some more of his books to make up for lost time! 2y

#EmojiMadness... 🕒 - this is another fab find from the #BigBadWolf book sale. How can I resist a hardcover of an original text classic - and illustrated by the inimitable Robert Ingpen - and for 5 dollars at that!

Kaye Love Jules Verne books. 2y
