A "heartbreakingly delicious" national bestseller about a chef, her students, and the evocative lessons that food teaches about life Once a month, eight students gather in Lillian's restaurant for a cooking class. Among them is Claire, a young woman coming to terms with her new identity as a mother; Tom, a lawyer whose life has been overturned by loss; Antonia, an Italian kitchen designer adapting to life in America; and Carl and Helen, a long-married couple whose union contains surprises the rest of the class would never suspect... The students have come to learn the art behind Lillian's soulful dishes, but it soon becomes clear that each seeks a recipe for something beyond the kitchen. And soon they are transformed by the aromas, flavors, and textures of what they create.

#RestaurantCvr The tagged book & its follow-up both have a restaurant on the cover. They are set around Lillian‘s restaurant where she holds cooking classes & are another two of my foodie book favorites. 🍽️🤍

If you haven‘t read them & enjoy foodie novels, you should! Read The School of Essential Ingredients first.

I kept thinking this story was set in Paris and then I was confused when someone drove to the desert or a 20-year-old wasn‘t allowed to drink… Do you know this problem or is it just me?

I read this after I loved No Two Persons. I loved the food-content in this, but thought the characters‘ stories were less diverse than in NTP. But it was the perfect book to read one chapter before going to sleep.

Thanks for the tag @TheRiehlDeal 💕

❄️ I feel like I could hang out with Chef Lillian (tagged book) for long periods of time & be quite happy. Not only would she probably be cooking wonderful meals (a very nice bestie benefit is a friend who throws down in the kitchen🤗), but she was all about good vibes amongst people.

❄️ Rozelle Quinn! It would be impossible to call her friend.

❄️ Friday Eve…the new name for Thursday!😂

Sapphire Rene-Marie Gamache from Louise Penny‘s books. A secondary character and not as quirky as some. Also Annie their daughter. 3y

Totally a charming and easy listen! It consists of character sketches and lots of food writing that I especially enjoyed. I loved the message that one must care for & respect ingredients to end up with a quality dish. 😋

I‘m going to check to see if this is a series. Definitely has the potential.

Prairiegirl_reading I loved this one too! The sequel is The Lost Art of Mixing. I think that‘s it though. 3y

All the stars! This book made my heart sing. The best book I‘ve read in a long time. Now I must read everything by this author! And there is a sequel! Let the squeezing begin! This should have a higher rating on goodreads but whatever. It‘s sweet and the language is beautiful.

Some reading before bed. I have to work tonight. This book is lovely. Easily the best I‘ve read this year. The language is beautiful and the stories move me. These cooking student‘s stories are eloquent and ordinary. I‘ll keep this and re-reread it. Meanwhile I‘ll make it last - one chapter a day.

I‘m not sure how best to describe this wonderful book. A series of character studies? A story of relationships? Self-discovery? The importance of food in creating memories, both ordinary and special? I know it‘s a book that made me cry multiple times, and has made me think and reflect as few others have. Just a great read. And a wonderful way to meet my #novelNovember readathon goals.

I thought the writing style was really neat. It's about a restaurant that teaches a cooking class once a month. The students vary from an old couple, a new mom, a depressed single man, goth chick, etc. We watch them grow to know each other while also getting peeks into their private lives. I rated it a so so because I couldn't finish it despite the neat style. There's just only so much I can read about the passion of kneading dough like a lover.

#BookNLunch! So this has been my regular lunch for awhile now, soup and salad. This afternoon‘s accompaniment: salad of mesculin mix, grape tomatoes, marinated mozzarella balls and mushrooms, cucumber, black olives, shredded carrots, chicken breast strips, bacon bits, and parmesan cheese, with honey dijon dressing; also, chicken spaetzle soup, and mineral water. MMmmm 😋! Happy reads & happy eats! 😎👌🏻

My main reading goal for 2019 is to climb as much of my #MountTBR as possible, while bringing in as few new books as possible. I can‘t believe how much I read in Jan! My faves were the tagged book, The Soul of an Octopus, and The Book of Dust.

Finished 19 books!
Bailed on 3.

16 owned TBR, 5 library books (physical and audio)

julesG 👏👏👏👏 6y
Jee_HookedOnBookz Wowwww!!! 19 in one month!!! That's what I read in 4-6 months!!!congrats! 6y
Soubhiville @Jee_HookedOnBookz lol, I don‘t really watch TV (except for 30 mins to an hour at night while we eat dinner), I don‘t have kids, and I don‘t do a lot socially besides dance classes, so I read a lot! Plus January is my slowest month at work, and when I don‘t have clients I have extra time off. The rest of the year won‘t look like this! 6y

Mdargusch Wow! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I need to get back to my Mt. TBR (edited) 6y
Jee_HookedOnBookz @Soubhiville wow but it's still such an achievement! I rarely watch TV too. Unless my LO insists that I watch with her 😅 I read whenever I can 😅 I pray one day I can have super reading powers like yours! Do you like reading when it's all quiet or you prefer some white noise? 6y
Soubhiville @Jee_HookedOnBookz I prefer quiet, but I can read if the tv is quiet with something boring like politics or sports on while my husband watches, or if he‘s playing computer games in the next room. But ideally I like it quiet. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Way to go!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 6y
Jee_HookedOnBookz @Soubhiville same here. Unless I'm already absorbed in the book. If I just started and trying to get used to the writing style, quiet is the better way to go haha 6y

I‘ve already had my first 5⭐️ read of 2019!

Bauermeister‘s writing is thick and rich like chocolate, crisp and fresh like just picked lettuce, warming like a good red wine.

Several strangers take a cooking class at a special restaurant kitchen. Each wants to learn more than how to cook, and we are lucky enough to look into each of their lives for just a little while.

This is a book that will stay in my heart, and on my bookshelf.

mcipher I‘m so glad you loved it! Her others are fabulous, too. She‘s just a killer writer. ❤️ 6y
