Hobbit, Or, There and Back Again (Young Reader)
Hobbit, Or, There and Back Again (Young Reader) | J R R Tolkien
"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort."Written for J.R.R. Tolkien s own children, "The Hobbit" met with instant critical acclaim when it was first published in 1937. Now recognized as a timeless classic, this introduction to the hobbit Bilbo Baggins, the wizard Gandalf, Gollum, and the spectacular world of Middle-earth recounts of the adventures of a reluctant hero, a powerful and dangerous ring, and the cruel dragon Smaug the Magnificent. The text in this 372-page paperback edition is based on that first published in Great Britain by Collins Modern Classics (1998), and includes a note on the text by Douglas A. Anderson (2001). Unforgettable! "

1. I think the oldest thing I own is a book about Chicago published in 1880. It talks about the city‘s history, interesting stories, and sites to see when visiting. Beautiful illustrations throughout. It‘s a really cool little book.

2. I would love for The Hobbit, or a book like it, to still be relevant in 100 years. It‘s what got me into reading and I hope it holds the same magic for future generations too.

I really enjoyed seeing Bilbo's personal growth along the way. Events out of his control conspire to throw him far outside of his comfort zone, and he rises to the challenge. It did run me through all the emotions though. It has suspense, fear, wonder, joy and sadly even heartbreak. I am currently traveling home myself and also very much identify with Bilbo in wanting to be back in my very own comfortable hobbit hole.

Look it‘s just a really magical story isn‘t it? Perhaps the only thing more magical than reading it yourself for the first time, is reading it to someone else for their first time (even if they‘re a bit too little to remember it). Already looking forward to reading this together again.

🎧 📖 : our road trip read - The Hobbit by J.R.R.Tolkien. Brilliant performance by Andy Serkis! He did voices that sounded remarkably like the actors‘ from the movie and in general was such an engaging narrator.
Our only complaint is that the sound mixing is weird -the loud parts are blaring and the quiet parts are so very quiet. We constantly had to adjust the volume. In the car and headphones - same issue.

A reread for me. The last time I read it I was in middle school. I was shocked at how much of my memory of it had been hijacked by the films. I‘m curious to see how much I misremember from the following trilogy. 😅 This will always be a very nostalgic story for me. I felt a profound connection to the young woman I was when I first read it and fell in love with Tolkien‘s world. ❤️

1. Yes! But not for a long time…I might have to rectify that soon. Blanket fort reading is always spectacular.

2. The tagged book because when I was little there was one winter when every weekend my mom would read a chapter of The Hobbit to my sisters & I. She read from the illustrated edition (based on the animated movie), almost always in front of the fire, & it was perfect. One of my most vivid childhood memories.

Mehso-so

This will likely not find favour with Tolkien fans, but if I were to rank the three interrelated pieces of media, the original novel, the films made from this material and the fanfic made as a result of the films, my rating would go: 1) fanfic, 2) films, 3) novel. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? While a good deal of this rating is based on my being a Bagginshield shipper, the fanfic tends to do the best job of filling out pieces where readers or viewers may have wanted to see more detail.
And of course, the wealth of fix-it fic where Thorin doesn't fucking die!
14mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? Most will find this an unfair assessment of the original work, as there really isn't enough in the original text to infer a romantic relationship between Bilbo Baggins and Thorin Oakenshield, it's not the point of that story. The subtext is present in the films chiefly because of the performance of the actors, even more so than the script, and fans just ran with it to expand on canon and fulfill the suggestion. It's not just this romance that flourishes in fanfic, though, you get all kinds of more complex windows into other characters and side ventures, that, while up to the transformative author's interpretation, enriches the world that Tolkien built. 14mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? The message at the heart of The Hobbit is present in the films and the better fanfic, though the fic I favour does its best to show that characters learn the lesson without the same tragedy. It's why I don't find myself spending much time with Tolkien-related media outside the fix-it realm. He had good reason for telling the stories he did, but they're all so goddamn sad. 14mo
Robotswithpersonality 5/5 And I can say with confidence now, having run back through his four most well known books, this ventures a little further into the high fantasy, and a narrative style that I don't love. I doubt I'll be investigating other works by this author. To each their own. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Still loved, even after many reads now…and this ending has always struck me as quite a great one.

Little did even the author know just how much this past episode would weave into a bigger trilogy to come, and the part of prophecy here… oh so very important to the future of that world, in ways the author hadn‘t yet quite even dreamed of. 😉. Without those, the wider world would not have faired quite so well. “Roads go ever ever on” indeed!

JazzFeathers So very true. Indeed, I appreciate The hobbit more every time I read it. On the surface, it's a fun, easy read, but there's so much more hidden under the surface. It's a surprising read. 1y

Always love this chapter every time l read it.
It's the core of Tolkien's philosophy of the common sense of the people that so often become courage and even bravery.

I also like the mix of 'right' and 'wrong', which also is at the core of Tolkien's philosophy. Sometimes an apparently wrong thing is the only tight thing to do.

And here, Tolkien starts again to mix epic fantasy (think the parlay between Bard and Thorin) and lighter matter (Bilbo's considerations on the matter) with his usual mastery.

I can see how this part of story can be read at many different levels, because l too once only saw the surface.

mabell That was really my big takeaway/revelation on reading this - how many types of readers can enjoy it. Surface readers (like me) and those who appreciate the deeper story and complexities will be equally satisfied. 😊 1y
Daisey @mabell As I read more and reread Tolkien, I appreciate the layers of his writing so much. It means I get something from it every time that I read it. 1y
JazzFeathers @mabell That's very true. And as @Daisey said, every time we read it, we discover something new because our understanding has enlarged with every read. I remember a time when I thought The Hobbit was cute. I now see so many interconnection with Tolkien's larger work and with his larger themes and inspirations. 1y
