Foxlowe | Eleanor Wasserberg
A suspenseful, gothic novel. We were the Family, and Foxlowe was our home. There was me my name is Green and my little sister, Blue. There was October, who we called Toby, and Ellensia, Dylan, Liberty, Pet and Egg. There was Richard, of course, who was one of the Founders. And there was Freya. We were the Family, but we weren't just an ordinary family. We were a new, better kind of family. We didn't need to go to school, because we had a new, better kind of education. We shared everything. We were close to the ancient way of living and the ancient landscape. We knew the moors, and the standing stones. We celebrated the solstice in the correct way, with honey and fruit and garlands of fresh flowers. We knew the Bad and we knew how to keep it away. And we had Foxlowe, our home. Where we were free. There really was no reason for anyone to want to leave.

This is so far from my usual read. I got it as a gift from a friend and thought it was a supernatural ghost book...

It is not.

It‘s about a cult commune and it‘s absolutely horrid and abusive leader. It‘s spilt in 3 parts, part 1 was the most enthralling and kept me captivated. Part 2 was a slog and part 3 finally answered the question from the end of part 1. It was a little vague at times but I really enjoyed this.

Sweetkokoro My word might not be the best to go on though as this isn‘t my preferred genre so I have no others like it to compare it too but I really feel this was well written, it was dark, tense and very troubling at times to read. It has child abuse and serious brain washing, but I feel the story was well crafted and kept me in a state of horror. 3y
Clare-Dragonfly I just saw an ad for a podcast about cults and utopias gone wrong and instantly subscribed, so I think I need to read this! 😁 3y

#7days7covers #covercrush #day5 I absolutely love this cover, the combination of the grey storm clouds with the gold leaves is just stunning. I love storms, especially the storms we get here in Australia at the change from winter to spring & summer to autumn so this cover instantly went on my top covers list. Plus, it‘s so perfect for the story within, one of those covers that tells the story perfectly.

Lizpixie Whoops, I don‘t think I‘m doing this challenge right, apparently I‘m not supposed to explain? And I have to tag someone each day. So @sisilia you want to give it a go, 7 days 7 favourite covers no explanations (if you want) and tag a litten each day. 5y

Disappointed by this one. Yes, there is some lovely writing and evocative language. But there's also vague pretentiousness in place of profundity and meandering poetic description in place of plot. As lovely as the words are they didn't convey anything of substance. It was all just too wishy-washy, unexplained, unfathomable - didn't/couldn't care about any of the characters because I didn't know them .... cont. in comments ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️

readingjedi Cont. from above.... their reasons, desires or motivations. All the bludgeoning foreshadowing undermines and overwhelms the few genuinely creepy/disturbing moments and there's too many loose ends, too many extraneous characters (Egg & Pet?!) and I felt the narrative structure wasn't great. Ending was good but build up was boring in places. 5y

I‘m a sucker for disturbing books, and “Foxlowe” was SO disturbing, that I almost didn‘t feel safe at some points 😃 It‘s told from the POV of a girl who grew up in a cult commune that resides in an old manor. The setting added to it being extra eerie, and the author did a great job of making the narrator unreliable due to her years of abuse & brainwashing. #creepy #cult #pick

Even though this is a disturbing story with a tragic end,it‘s still a beautiful book.A writers talent with words, like Eleanor Wasserberg has,can make what is awful into an absorbing read. I‘ll definitely be watching for her books in the future.Green was born at Foxlowe, part of the family that live in the grand house but keep to the old ways. Celebrating solstices & trying to keep The Bad out of the family ends in things going too far.

CuriousG I also found this book both disturbing yet liked reading it. Great pick! 6y

The hubby got rained in at his sisters property, so I‘m on my own tonight with this gorgeous book keeping me company. The cover is one of the most beautiful I‘ve ever seen, it speaks to me of autumn days, of rainstorms & falling golden leaves. The story inside is not a happy one but it‘s told in a sort of *stream of consciousness* way that just flows. What are you guys doing with your Saturday/Sunday?

For my next read, I closed my eyes, hoped for the best & grabbed a book from my #MountTBR Ive just finished the first 10pgs & it showing promise, plus it has one of the most beautiful covers I‘ve seen, very autumnal which is very appropriate for this hemisphere. Foxlowe is about a commune, a chosen “family living by the ancient principles of worshiping Mother Earth & the solstices. It‘s been described as atmospheric & haunting which sounds perfect!

Imagine Merricat from We Have Always Lived in the Castle turns her ramshackle house into an isolated commune with a vaguely neo-pagan flavour but essentially run on her wilfully inane ideas about the Bad. Behold, Foxlowe and its disturbed and abusive leader, Freya! Now put children in her care.

It's as chilling as you might expect, especially the child Green's enduring love of, and need for, Freya.

A few too many loose threads, though. 3*

TRUE CONFESSIONS: I am struggling with this one. I have less than two hours to go, but... This novel is just plain confusing. I've tried very hard to connect with these kids growing up in an old mansion. This should be working for me. It has not - even after Green leaves. Continue? I don't know.

Narrator Charlie Sanderson is fine. In one section her narration was brilliant. That said, I'd prefer she did no voices than some and not others.

This book is unsettling in a dreamy way, then jarring as we move to a new time with one character, without knowing what she knows. I liked the combo of gothic and cult but it was too far from realistic without being in a fantasy world to really make enough sense. It would still be a good read in a cozy place with a fire.

Genrebending I bailed on this one. I think I wanted it to be weirder. 7y
