Did your parents ever tell you, "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all?"
Well, check out my 4th of July mani! ?
And, another nice thing - I only paid a dollar for this weird, choppy, depressing book.
This is so far from my usual read. I got it as a gift from a friend and thought it was a supernatural ghost book...
It is not.
It‘s about a cult commune and it‘s absolutely horrid and abusive leader. It‘s spilt in 3 parts, part 1 was the most enthralling and kept me captivated. Part 2 was a slog and part 3 finally answered the question from the end of part 1. It was a little vague at times but I really enjoyed this.
This was disturbing but very good. I recommend. I listened to the audio version which I think really contributed to the experience.
This creepy cultist commune reminded me of season two of The Sinner. One has a happier ending than the other...
Thanks again @TorieStorieS #hocuspocusswap #spooktober #hallowreads
#7days7covers #covercrush #day5 I absolutely love this cover, the combination of the grey storm clouds with the gold leaves is just stunning. I love storms, especially the storms we get here in Australia at the change from winter to spring & summer to autumn so this cover instantly went on my top covers list. Plus, it‘s so perfect for the story within, one of those covers that tells the story perfectly.
Disappointed by this one. Yes, there is some lovely writing and evocative language. But there's also vague pretentiousness in place of profundity and meandering poetic description in place of plot. As lovely as the words are they didn't convey anything of substance. It was all just too wishy-washy, unexplained, unfathomable - didn't/couldn't care about any of the characters because I didn't know them .... cont. in comments ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
Starting this one tonight. Bought it on the basis of liking the cover.
I‘m a sucker for disturbing books, and “Foxlowe” was SO disturbing, that I almost didn‘t feel safe at some points 😃 It‘s told from the POV of a girl who grew up in a cult commune that resides in an old manor. The setting added to it being extra eerie, and the author did a great job of making the narrator unreliable due to her years of abuse & brainwashing. #creepy #cult #pick
Even though this is a disturbing story with a tragic end,it‘s still a beautiful book.A writers talent with words, like Eleanor Wasserberg has,can make what is awful into an absorbing read. I‘ll definitely be watching for her books in the future.Green was born at Foxlowe, part of the family that live in the grand house but keep to the old ways. Celebrating solstices & trying to keep The Bad out of the family ends in things going too far.
The hubby got rained in at his sisters property, so I‘m on my own tonight with this gorgeous book keeping me company. The cover is one of the most beautiful I‘ve ever seen, it speaks to me of autumn days, of rainstorms & falling golden leaves. The story inside is not a happy one but it‘s told in a sort of *stream of consciousness* way that just flows. What are you guys doing with your Saturday/Sunday?
For my next read, I closed my eyes, hoped for the best & grabbed a book from my #MountTBR Ive just finished the first 10pgs & it showing promise, plus it has one of the most beautiful covers I‘ve seen, very autumnal which is very appropriate for this hemisphere. Foxlowe is about a commune, a chosen “family living by the ancient principles of worshiping Mother Earth & the solstices. It‘s been described as atmospheric & haunting which sounds perfect!
One trip to the bookshop later. 😍
Imagine Merricat from We Have Always Lived in the Castle turns her ramshackle house into an isolated commune with a vaguely neo-pagan flavour but essentially run on her wilfully inane ideas about the Bad. Behold, Foxlowe and its disturbed and abusive leader, Freya! Now put children in her care.
It's as chilling as you might expect, especially the child Green's enduring love of, and need for, Freya.
A few too many loose threads, though. 3*
#bestof2017 Honorable Mention
From Goodreads: A chilling, compulsive debut about group mentality, superstition and betrayal – and a utopian commune gone badly wrong
We were the Family, and Foxlowe was our home.
Very good read.
I had seen these book sleeves on Litsy and always thought they were a great idea! I am so glad I ordered one and I love the little gifts that came with my order!
I have read all of or part of these books while being on a #bigjetplane going to or from vacation ✈️✈️

It took me SO long to listen to this. The first part is OK. Took a while to get into and by the time I did, it jumped into the future, where my interest waned to the point I wanted to bail, but I was already 80% done and. Well, didn't think the ending was worth the wait 😫
The main character, Green, has #scartissue - both the visible kind and the kind only Green can feel in her soul. This is a story about a cult and the restraints, but also joys, one finds when living there.

Foxlowe is up for grabs! Just leave a comment below with your favorite author. Winner will be randomly selected Sunday 8am EST (U.S. only).
Boo!!!!! Boo!!!!!
TRUE CONFESSIONS: I am struggling with this one. I have less than two hours to go, but... This novel is just plain confusing. I've tried very hard to connect with these kids growing up in an old mansion. This should be working for me. It has not - even after Green leaves. Continue? I don't know.
Narrator Charlie Sanderson is fine. In one section her narration was brilliant. That said, I'd prefer she did no voices than some and not others.
Well, I gave Into the Water a try in audio, but I don't have the level of concentration it would need, so I switched to Foxlowe. Uh, this is an odd bird of a book. I'm not sure if this is going to work at all. I thought the Gothic feel would be perfect. Now I'm not so sure. We'll see.
Favourite books ~ April 2017 ~ I read 12 books last months and these were my favourite reads.📚
The City of Mirrors (The Passage Trilogy~Book 3) by Justin Cronin
Foxlowe by Eleanor Wasserberg
Lullabies for Little Criminals by Heather O'Neill
Holding Up the Universe by Jennifer Niven 📚📖
This is a story about a girl living at a cult/commune. Wasn't a big fan of the book, especially the formatting.

Breakfast delivered to me this morning!! Love that there is a coffee/pizza shop nearby that delivers.
Ugh, I keep falling asleep while reading my book. Maybe a quick nap will get me back on track for #springcleaningreadathon and #deweyreadathon
This book is unsettling in a dreamy way, then jarring as we move to a new time with one character, without knowing what she knows. I liked the combo of gothic and cult but it was too far from realistic without being in a fantasy world to really make enough sense. It would still be a good read in a cozy place with a fire.
I don't know what I expected from this book, but I don't feel like it met any expectations. It wasn't bad. It was slow and didn't have many answers to questions that arised (on my part).
There must be something wrong with me, creepy covers make me feel calm and happy. Starting this beauty tonight.
A dark story of a cultish commune and abuse, softened through the naïveté of its young narrator... felt overly familiar rather than fresh and while it goes further into the narrator's life than I expected, it just didn't work as well as I'd hoped!
Woohoo! Apparently this is my lucky week with Goodreads giveaways. This never happens!
#BookNDinner! #StPatty's edition! The impending blizzard got me in the mood for some cozy comfort food. What could better than seasoned corned beef, golden potatoes, baby carrots, and cabbage? All marinated in Guinness Blonde American Lager in the crockpot for 10 hours! Yum, yum! This has been another presentation of: #MrBookBookBabeKitchen. Happy reads & happy eats! 😋 Outside the window, you can see the snow, all aglow. ❄️
#FunFridayPhoto: #Shelfie! 📚❤📚❤ These are our temporary overstuffed bookcases in our library. Can't wait to get the proper ones and finish off the best room in the house! I suspect @MrBook is at least as excited for that day as I am! 😉
I admit that this tiny stack is not my best effort, but today kicked my butt. #onewordtitles #photoadaynov16
I've finished this in one sitting. I'll not get over this book any time soon. If you are looking for the perfect gothic book, this is it .
"We were the Family, but we weren't just an ordinary family. We were a new, better kind of family."
Just couldn't hang with this one.
The hubby picked up my library holds for me today, Foxlowe sounds dreamy & beautiful, about a "commune" living according to the old ways, & I Found You by Lisa Jewell, author of The Girls In The Garden, about a missing man & a found man. Is he the same man? I don't remember ordering that one, but it sounds interesting. Better get a move on with these books, I keep having dreams of being crushed by a falling tower of hardcovers!
I am hoping to finish Voyager over this holiday weekend. After that, these are my next four reads. Have you read any of these? How are they?
I am meant to tell Blue's story, but it doesn't flow as it should: there are broken and jagged edges to it, and some pieces are too sharp for the tongue to tell #biblioweekend #book2 #goodstart
