The Bookshop: The Gate of Angels ; The Blue Flower | Penelope Fitzgerald
165 posts | 79 read | 2 reading | 107 to read
(Book Jacket Status: Jacketed) Penelope Fitzgerald, who died in 2000, emerged late in life as one of the most remarkable English writers of the last century. She began her writing career in 1975 at the age of fifty-nine, and over the next two decades she published three biographies, nine novels, and a collection of short stories. Now three of her acclaimed novels are gathered here in one volume. The Bookshopis a postwar tragicomedy of manners, set in an isolated seaside town where an enterprising woman opens a bookstore only to find it beset by poltergeists, weather, and hostile townsfolk. The Gate of Angelsis an Edwardian romance within a novel of ideas: a young doctor devoted to science and to his all-male Cambridge college finds his life and views disrupted by a nurse named Daisy. The Blue Flower, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award, revitalizes historical drama through the story of Novalis, an eighteenth-century German romantic poet and visionary genius, and his unlikely love affair with a simple child-woman. These three novels all display Fitzgeralds characteristic wit, intellectual breadth, and narrative brilliance, applied to an array of traditional forms into which she breathed new life.

I went book swap shopping today at my favorite indie bookshop in Hove. I had so much fun browsing and picked up my fave free book mag and a new loyalty card ☺️ Just need to finish buying chocolate now! So much fun buying for fellow book lovers! #littlechristmasswap #jolabokaflodswap #bestof2021swap

I‘ve been missing literary fiction. I haven‘t had the time or energy to read anything other than serial killer fiction. I woke up this morning so excited for Independent Bookstore Day so I decided to pluck this slim novella from my shelves. I found it delightful and was reminded of what I love about the genre.

Crazeedi I read one of her books, the title escapes me, but it was very different and good 4y
BarbaraBB I loved this one too. And I know what you mean about serial killer fiction. 4y
Ruthiella Fitzgerald is an amazing writer. It‘s magic the way she conveys so much with just a few sentences. 4y

A walk across Hackney Marshes to the smallest little bookstore, where I had my exclusive 15 minutes - just for me! There are some small upsides to a pandemic!

Itchyfeetreader Love it at Phlox! Aimee is a gem; would also recommend Marmelo kitchen on the same road !! 4y
Mitch @Itchyfeetreader I picked some bread up from Marmelo! 4y
Soubhiville Yay! I‘m glad you got to shop a bit. I‘m trying to decide if I‘ll venture out today. I have a Barnes and Noble gift card... and I was thinking a latte might be nice. (To go, of course) 4y

Chrissyreadit What a cute name for a bookstore! 4y
Mitch @Chrissyreadit the owners mum and dad used to own a bookstore called Phlox. It closed down a while ago. The daughter decided to open her bookstore and she named it Phlox - in honour of her parents store. 4y
Chrissyreadit @Mitch that is lovely! What is the bookstore like? 4y
Mitch @Chrissyreadit it‘s super tiny. With a coffee bar in the corner. But because it‘s so tiny they‘re very careful about what books they stick and there is always a wonderfully curated selection. 4y

Just spent about 90 minutes watching The Bookshop movie with Emily Mortimer, Bill Nighy, and Patricia Clarkson. So, so disappointed in the ending! I can handle sad endings, but Patricia Clarkson‘s character *needed* her comeuppance! Still mad about it!

Blueberry Agree with everything you said. 5y

Spent a lovely time chatting to the bookseller ( the vicars wife!) and browsing the shelves. Penelope Fitzgerald worked in a bookshop opposite here ( no longer a book shop) and used her time there to write The Bookshop.

Book was meh 😐
It was really short, with no real conflict resolution, with some sorry characters. But at least it was original and not twee.

Hoping the film has a more satisfying ending and more character development.

charl08 Yeah I was underwhelmed too. 6y
Sarah83 I thought quite the same 6y

There isn't any reason I should not have liked this book. Great premise - a woman opens a bookshop in a town that doesn't have one, there is a ghost in the building, she has a charming little girl who comes in to help her. It was all there, but I didn't love it.

Story set in the little English village after the war is about the middle aged woman who is trying to open the bookshop, and this idea leads to many troubles for her. Sweet and short, with some tragic-comical moments and witty observations. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

While I was napping today to prepare for my night shift, my husband ran errands with the boys. Their first stop was our local library. I had requested this movie a couple of months ago after reading the book but had no idea that they had purchased it. My only sorrow comes from the fact that I can't watch it until tomorrow.

LiterRohde Just happened Thursday night! After a full day teaching and then 4 hours of parent teacher conferences in the evening, some coworkers wanted to go for a drink. I said no, I‘d rather just go home and read. “Oh, come on, come on. It‘ll be fun.” Repeatedly. I had to say yes so as to not look like a jerk. At least that‘s how I felt. So, another two hours around people at a bar. Hooray. 🥳🤬 6y

Definitely not for me. I don't mind when books don't have a happy ending, or when the ending isn't wrapped up in a neat bow. But to have the main character's life completely go to pieces in the last few pages is lazy and unnecessary.

I didn‘t hate this but didn‘t really like it either. Quiet, but not in an intimate, moving way. It was just too cold and distant to feel any attachment or investment. Not much plot, few likable characters, and not real sense of hope or anyone getting their just desserts. Just kind of sad and blah.

One bonus is that it‘s short and could be read in a day.

This one is about human nature and not so much books or a bookstore. Social hierarchy, subtle bullying, and the machinations of others derail a dream for a widow who just wants to provide her town with a bookstore and make use of a building that‘s been empty and abandoned for ages. Her one real ally dies, and social pressure wins.
