The Language of Flowers
The Language of Flowers: A Novel | Vanessa Diffenbaugh
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The Victorian language of flowers was used to convey romantic expressions: honeysuckle for devotion, asters for patience, and red roses for love. But for Victoria Jones, its been more useful in communicating mistrust and solitude. After a childhood spent in the foster-care system, she is unable to get close to anybody, and her only connection to the world is through flowers and their meanings. Now eighteen and emancipated from the system with nowhere to go, Victoria realizes she has a gift for helping others through the flowers she chooses for them. But an unexpected encounter with a mysterious stranger has her questioning whats been missing in her life. And when shes forced to confront a painful secret from her past, she must decide whether its worth risking everything for a second chance at happiness. Look for special features inside. Enjoyed reading about the different messages that a flower has and how flowers can repair broken hearts. I cared for each member of the unconventional family and was thrilled with the ending.

Victoria (the main character) is bounced around from foster home to group home until she turns 18. What‘s next? And why is she so seriously damaged? And how does she know so much about flowers?
I enjoyed this book, but in the middle I thought it might break me, but then the story turned and I liked the ending.

Moss has no roots.

I'm not the Romance / Contemporary kind of person. But this was a really heart warming read. I love that it is shaped around this romantic flower language; but still touch the soul with love, forgiveness and family.
Truly something different.

Novel about a young woman who, aging out of foster care and a group home, must learn to live on her own. Her skill with flowers will help her find work, but her past, especially her relationship with a foster parent who taught her about flowers, must be confronted. Themes related to parenting, motherhood and becoming a good person when you‘ve had few examples to follow. https://cannonballread.com/2019/03/the-language-of-flowers-a-novel-elcicco/

FLOWERS

Victoria knew she could identify flowers and what effect they would have on a person. She could choose flowers, know what emotion they would evoke, and what the person receiving the flowers needed.

This book stood for unconditional love, for hardship, for talent, for disappointment, and for working for what you really want.

Have you read this book from 2011?

#tarottakeover 3 #theempresscard can represent the creation of life, romance, art, or new business, & this heart wrenching book has all of those things. The main character is flawed & distant, so she uses flower arranging to work through things. Along the way, she finds both maternal and romantic love, as well as acceptance & healing. Motherhood & creativity is a permeating topic in this one. @ErinSueG @WhiskeyMistress

ErinSueMreads Wow that looks like an excellent prompt choice! That book sounds fantastic as well. Is it really chick lit though? 1y
madamereadsalot1 @ErinSueG I don't think so at all. It's really the story of a poor girl from the California foster system being emancipated out of the system and just her struggle with her past, present, and future. The author even worked to raise awareness of what happened to unadopted kids in the system when they age out. It's really heartfelt and touching ... 1y

Bought flowers today and this book always comes to mind. Since reading, I‘ve never looked at flowers the same way.

Bought this at an op shop a year ago, finally read it and was pleasantly surprised. It‘s an easy read, ‘upmarket contemporary‘ I guess, focusing on a young woman who has aged out of the foster care system and is left with no support or resources. Sounded like a few other books I‘ve read, but this one steered away from the usual tropes. Unusual to see a young female misanthrope for a change - I thought that was well done.

Centique BTW if you get exasperated by characters making poor choices you would hate this. I thought it was consistent with the character though. There‘s one situation in here that is very well described, best I‘ve seen - I‘ll mark it under a spoiler. 1y
Centique Amazing depiction of post partum depression in first weeks after birth. Very worth reading if you want insight into one way (although there are many) that can play out. 1y
